Establishing Churches

Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us go

back and visit the brothers in all the towns where

we preached the word of the Lord and see howthey are doing . . . but Paul chose Silas and left,

commended by the brothers to the grace of the

Lord. He went through Syria and Cilicia,

strengthening the churches.

Pauls calling involved bringing the gospel to new

areas that did not have any disciples of Jesus.

Without the presence of Christ-followers and theirstable networks of relationships, Paul primarily

relied on proclamation to accomplish his calling.

Some were saying, "What would this idle babbler

wish to say?" Others, "He seems to be a

proclaimer of strange deities,"--because he waspreaching Jesus and the resurrection. And they

took him and brought him to the Areopagus,

saying, "May we know what this new teaching is

which you are proclaiming? "For you are bringingsome strange things to our ears; so we want to

know what these things mean."

new ways that we are not used to.
