1.0) Background Information The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce recognizes the value that infrastructure projects bring to our community and the challenges that arise in finding local sources for procurement. The production of this book is to provide potential contractors with procurement and community information that support large construction projects such as the BC Hydro’s Ruskin Dam and Powerhouse Project. It is a resource that will be updated semi-annually to maintain accurate contacts, add new information and additional fill in gaps of information that may be required. On-line and printed versions are available. Part I of the Handbook lists local business and Chamber members in four major categories: Trades & Construction, Transportation, Goods & Services and Property. Separated by a District Map, Part II lists Community information that is relevant to doing business in Mission and moving into the area. It also covers transportation routes, emergency services and hospital information.

In 1974, the derby was cancelled, and after many attempts to resurrect it the derby was finally back in 1999, a quarter of a century later. The first new race was held on July 01, 1999 sponsored by the Mission and District lions Club along with businesses and community groups. Today the Mission & District Soapbox Derby Association holds the race in partnership with many great community members. Port Two port locations that are within an hour from Mission, the Port of Vancouver and the Fraser River Port have amalgamated into the Port Metro Vancouver. The Vancouver location is located approximately 65 km west of Mission at Burrard Inlet and is home to Canada’s largest port. The port is made up of 4 key business sectors – Containerized cargo, Cruise, Bulk (ie: grain & coal) and General cargo (ie: forest products). www.portmetrovancouver.com Rail Canadian Pacific Railway (CP Rail) operates its east-west mainline through the community with connective points to the inter-modal rail yards in Pitt Meadows to the west, and to the rail freight yards in Coquitlam. CP Rail maintains a 'wye' within the Mission rail yard for track maintenance materials. It also funnels trains to Sumas, Washington through the Mission Junction. The eastern terminus location of West Coast Express is also located on leased track in Mission. Recent changes with rail movement also means that CP Rail 'shares' its track with CN Railway and often a CN train, as well as the VIA Rail train, can be seen travelling through Mission.

West Coast Express West Coast Express is an efficient commuter rail service linking Mission, Port Haney, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam and Port Moody with downtown Vancouver. West Coast Express operates Monday to Friday during peak commuter periods. The trip from Mission to Vancouver takes 1 hour and 13 minutes. Fishing To the south of Mission is the mighty Fraser River. The river is home to some of the best sturgeon fishing in North America. Sturgeons in the area are known to exceed 1200lbs and over 14 feet in length. Fraser River Heritage Park Fraser River Heritage Park is located at one of the most breathtakingly beautiful locations to be found anywhere. The site of many community activities, including weekly Wednesday evening concerts at the bandstand during the summer months, the park is also visited regularly by local residents for the sheer enjoyment of the setting. 8.0) Community Services 8.1) Policing The Mission RCMP Detachment serves a rapidly growing and diverse community with a population of approximately 40,000 District residents. The Detachment is a 48 municipal and 6 provincial officer detachment providing key services and programs in general duty policing, community response, street crime policing, forensic identification, general investigations, police dog service, traffic and administrative support.

8.2) Fire & Rescue The Mission Fire/Rescue Service is responsible for providing a variety of fire and safety related services to the public. These services include emergency and non-emergency response to fires, fire alarms, motor vehicle accidents and medical emergencies. The Department offers public education programs, varying from lectures on fire safety to fire extinguisher training for industry. In addition, regular fire safety inspections are done by the Department to ensure compliance with the Fire Services Act and the B.C. Fire Code. Fire Station No. 1 on Seventh Avenue is the Fire Department headquarters providing administrative and logistical support for all three stations. It also contains an Emergency Operations Centre with active members ready to provide emergency services at any time if required. Fulltime administrative staff consists of a Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, Fire Prevention Officer, Fire Inspector and two clerical staff. Fire Station No. 1 also has eight career fire fighters working from 7 am to 6 pm seven days per week. Eighty “paid on call” fire fighters work out of all three fire stations strategically located with the boundaries of the District of Mission. Fire Stations No. 2 and No. 3 are completely manned by “paid on call” members with a District Chief in charge at each station. Staff are also prepared to respond to discrimination.) Family Place: Parents, volunteers and staff provide a mixture of structured and unstructured play and social activities for young children (newborn to six years of age) to engage with other children and adults, while in the company of their parent or caregiver. Healthy snacks are provided and once a week a nutritious lunch is prepared with the parents for their families. Travelling Tree House: This program is very much the same as Family Place, however, it was created for families who live in the rural areas of Mission. Child Care Resource and Referral Program: The Child Care Resource and Referral Program, provides support, resources and referral services for child care providers and parents. The program also works with community groups to promote quality child care choices that meet the needs of local families. Future Shop Daycare: This daycare is a program created as a stay-in-school initiative aimed at returning pregnant and parenting adolescents to school to complete their education. It provides onsite infant/toddler care which allows young parents to return to full or part-time studies, thus contributing to their academic success. First priority is given to adolescent parents, second priority to Ministry of Children and Family Development children and remaining space are for community children.
