Challenges – Line of Sight

13

• Brazilian Oil fields are far from shore (100 – 300 km)

• Needs high altitude mountain to reach oil-field

But it’s not…

Microwave links in licensed bands needs “Line of Sight”

Frequency bands from 4 GHz to 18 GHz

• A range of around 50 km rig to rig, and 100 -170 km onshore (mountain) to offshore

When things moves

• Floating installations moves with waves even if anchored

• FPSOs based on a vessel hull rotate around the anchoring

• Microwave antennas has a narrow beam width, causing loss of signal

when the antenna points off target

Antenna beam without PointLink

Antenna beam with PointLink

• Target aiming based on highly accurate GPS compass/Gyro information

• Stabilized Antenna

• Antenna sizes 0.3 to 3.0m (1ft to 10ft)

• Frequency 3.6 – 18.0 GHz

• ATEX certifications

(EU 94/9/EC directive - Appareils destinés à être utilisés en ATmosphères EXplosives )

(operate in an environment with an explosive atmosphere)

Zones

The zone defines the probability of hazardous material being present in an ignitable

concentration in the surrounding atmosphere

Zone 0 Area in which an explosive gas-air mixture is continuously present or present for long periods.

Zone 1 Combustible or conductive dusts are present. Area in which an explosive gas-air mixture is likely to occur for short periods in normal operation.

Zone 2 Area in which an explosive gas-air mixture is not likely to occur, and if it occurs it will only exist for a very short time due to an abnormal condition.

Over the horizon systems

29

• Troposcatter systems is a viable solution for the hard to reach areas

• Traditionally used for ultra long links with huge fixed antennas

• Under study for use for offshore links 100 – 200 km

• High cost and complexity (TX power 100W to 1kW)
