Welcome to the Mercy Center for Women Annual Review 2017! We hope you will embrace the heartfelt stories

shared by our women, volunteers and staff. Many wonderful changes happened in 2016-2017 at the Mercy Center for our women and children. Your generous gifts provided our mission with the opportunity to enhance our programs and the everyday essentials in maintaining a safe facility.

The Sisters of Mercy invested in the vision many of you support today. We invite you to continue to share your generous gifts of time, talent and treasure with the Mercy Center for Women. Many of our programs continue to thrive, like Dress for Success Erie, because of you. Benefactors like you believe and support the Mercy mission. Together, we continue to walk the journey with our women and children.

The Mercy Center for Women took a significant hit of $165,000 with the loss of HUD funding. We will persevere and partner with others in providing the time, tools and essentials to maintain and expand our services to the women and children we serve 24 hours a day/7 days a week/365 days a year.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for believing in our mission. There is never a day that a generous clothing donation, a monetary gift or volunteers giving of their time does not take place at the Mercy Center. We appreciate your ongoing support and willingness to travel the road of recovery with us. It takes many steps to get there but like the yellow brick road in the Wizard of Oz, once you arrive great things are in store for a promising future.

May God bless you always with a kind heart!

Dress for Success Erie

The Sisters of Mercy wanted to extend their ministry work in 2008 and welcomed Dress for Success® Erie as an affiliate program. Each year Mary Graziano and Team Dress suit hundreds of women for job interviews. They provide the client with job readiness skills to include resume building and interview preparation.

The staff of Dress for Success allow each client to feel special. They take their time in fitting each woman into an appropriate outfit. An outfit they are comfortable in. Often the clients will write a note sharing how uplifting their experience was and how important they felt. It is these small gestures that make the Dress for Success program Erie’s best kept secret. Throughout the years they have served hundreds of women in many capacities. The Purse and Pearl Luncheon was initiated through the efforts of Dress for Success. This luncheon serves over 600 men and women in the community with proceeds benefiting the Mercy Center for Women and Dress for Success.

Changing lives best summarizes Dress for Success and the clients they serve are forever grateful.

Kacie holds her 17-month-old daughter Violet tightly. At a year and a half, Violet has a shy smile and pale cherubim cheeks. It’s hard to believe that several months ago Violet and her mother had been residents at Mercy Center. But to look at Kacie—her smile, her energy, her contentment—you wouldn’t see the months of hard work that went into cultivating this new mother.

Kacie was born in Albion, PA. The oldest of seven children, Kacie openly admits she has all the children she will ever need in her daughter, Violet. “It was very rare that I received any attention,” Kacie told me. And, arguably, that lack of attention would sculpt how Kacie would cope with the trials she faced in adolescence. In high school she was the self-professed “tomboy.” She involved herself in the woodshop program and felt that she had a passion, if not talent, for working with her hands. For the most part, Kacie’s high school experience was that of most American teens: crushes, partying, and homework.

But a lot of that changed for Kacie when her stepfather molested her. As things were spiraling out of control for Kacie, she decided to move to Erie. Maybe a change of scenery would help Kacie process her grief; maybe she’d find a good job, a home of her own, and new friends. Maybe, she thought, maybe she could change the narrative of her life.

In Erie, Kacie made new “friends” in name only. The crowd she associated with was a negative influence on a young, impressionable woman who was struggling to find her place. “I was doing cocaine, Ritalin, and Adderall,” Kacie says, “I surrounded myself with the wrong people and was codependent on them.” To cope with the hurt and poverty of her circumstances, Kacie used drugs to numb any and all feelings except the temporary warm euphoria of her high.

Kacie would try on and off to get clean. But, to further suppress Kacie’s spirit, she witnessed the death of a close friend from an overdose and Kacie miscarried a pregnancy…At least she thought she miscarried. In February it was confirmed that she was, in fact, pregnant. Kacie was shocked. She stopped using drugs “cold turkey.”

Before coming to Mercy Center, Kacie stayed in other residential shelters that were infested with bed bugs. She was alone, worried about her baby, and unsure of her future, but Violet, she decided, would be her saving grace. “At Mercy Center, I gained independence. I learned who I was. At first, I fought with the other residents and social workers, but I learned to be mature, how to think about my actions and their consequences. I felt like I was given a second chance.”

Today, Mercy Center is a “home away from home” for Kacie. She plans to go into the medical field, hopefully nursing or phlebotomy, with the long-term goal of becoming a drug and alcohol mental health professional.

“You have to hit rock bottom, your personal rock bottom, before you realize the severity of your problem,” Kacie said. I asked Kacie if she thought recovery was possible for everyone. Without hesitation she supplied this answer: “Recovery is possible for everyone.” Kacie has been clean for twenty-two months.

Focus on Kacie... Reaching Goals

At Mercy Center, I gained independence. I learned who I was. I felt like I was given a second chance.

The volunteers of Mercy Center for Women and Dress for Success Erie give back in many wonderful ways. The hours of time, talent and treasure volunteers share with our organization are endless. They are often the beacon of hope our women and children need on their journey to recovery.

We all measure volunteerism in different ways. At Mercy Center for Women our volunteers answer phones, perform clerical tasks, sort clothing, help prepare meals, grocery shop and help to move our women forward on their journey. The mentorship provided to our women from the volunteers leaves a meaningful message they will carry always.

The PDI volunteers and A Hand Up have shared their volunteers with the Mercy Center. A group of 15 from PDI landscaped the entire Mercy Center building on two separate occasions this summer. A Hand Up has provided furniture and the volunteers to move it for our women.

Thank you to all the volunteers for believing in the Mercy Mission and walking with our women and children on their journey.

Thanks to Our Volunteers

The residents and staff of the Mercy Center

activities, including the garden provided by

Mercyhurst students and volunteers. We

welcome service dogs like Tank to help guide

those in need.

2017 Alumna of the Year: Brandy KriegerBrandy Krieger is an Erie native, originally born in Harborcreek, the oldest of six children. During elementary school, Brandy enjoyed playing saxophone and basketball. She is a proud graduate of Fairview High School.

After having two children by the age of 22, Brandy decided to attain her Medical Assistant degree. In doing so, she fell in love with the medical field. When her third child was born, she knew that despite the challenges of being a new mother she was destined to return to school and become a registered nurse.

Brandy considers herself a survivor. She’s overcome a lot in the past couple of years: childhood abuse, lack of guidance, and alcohol addiction. Admittedly, she’s learned most life lessons the hard way. And though there were many instances when Brandy wasn’t an exemplary mother, friend, or sister, by the grace of God and through the love of her children, Brandy was able to make positive choices. Though she contemplated suicide, Brandy knew the consequences of such a decision would bequeath innumerable complications on those she loved most.

So, she decided to fight a battle for the well-being of her physical, emotional, and spiritual health, as well as for her children.

And Brandy is certainly winning the battle. Through humility, Brandy pulled on every resource available and worked a program of recovery. By doing so, she has united her family, secured a stable home life, developed support networks, and managed to achieve her Associates in Science for Nursing. Presently, Brandy awaits to take her state boards for licensure.

Brandy is so grateful for everyone who has believed in her. Today she is a committed mother, sister, friend, and civilian. She does her best to help others by letting them know that someone cares. She donates clothes all year round, volunteers at local shelters and businesses during the holidays, and has earned her community’s faith from her service endeavors.

Brandy can’t wait for the good to keep unfolding in her life, and thanks the Mercy Center for Women for recognizing all her hard work and achievements. She feels honored and blessed.

Brandy is so grateful for everyone who has believed in her. Today she is a committed mother, sister, friend, and civilian. She does her best to help others by letting them know that someone cares.

Meet Darlene!MCW Volunteer and Clothing Connoisseur

“Sort everything. Sort by blouse, dress pants, jeans, shoes and purses. From there you go by sizes. Once you know your routine, it’s a lot easier,” Darlene Bush tells me, unpacking a massive, black garbage bag filled with clothing. Darlene sorts the donations with a military precision. Men’s clothes go straight to the Erie City Mission as well as anything that is, in Darlene’s estimation, “out of season.”

Darlene has been MCW’s de facto “Your Daily Threads” boutique official for quite some time. She’s been volunteering at the center for a little over three years. Coincidentally, Darlene first got involved with the center when she was a customer at the shop. She liked the mission while visiting, and wanted to get involved as well.

“I’ve seen a lot of what the women go through here, and sometimes it hits home,” Darlene says. I ask her to share what she means by something “hitting home.”

“My brother has struggled with drug addiction. He’s clean now, but staying clean is not an easy task,” Darlene admits. Volunteering at Mercy Center is a way Darlene gives back to the community and people whose struggle is familiar to her.

Darlene takes a lot of pride in the work she does at the store, making a prodigious effort to make sure it’s a place where people want to come. People from all walks of life use the store as it offers articles of clothing all priced at $3.00 or less. Some customers even come in daily because the inventory changes often.

However, before a donation is taken to the boutique it’s offered to the clients of MCW who often come to the center with little or nothing. Sometimes Darlene sees donated clothing that she thinks a certain client might like and sets it aside to recommend to them.

Personal style and fashion has always been a passion for Darlene. When she shops, she looks for three things: comfort, design, and the “Machine Wash Only” tag. Growing up, Darlene loved to coordinate outfits, especially her purses and shoes. But that wasn’t always easy with fifteen siblings, eight sisters and seven brothers. Her mother shopped at the Salvation Army, her father repurposed furniture, Darlene learned at a young age how to appreciate items that were sourced resourcefully.

Though she was raised in Spartansburg, Darlene now lives with her husband on the outskirts of Erie. Her two daughters, Crystal and Felicia, live in Corry. Her words of advice to all readers considering volunteering are to, “Take a little bit of your time and give it to others, it means a lot.”

“Take a little bit of your time and give it to others,

it means a lot.”

Professional Women’s Group

Dress for Success Erie’s Professional Women’s Group (PWG) provides our clients with support, practical information and inspiration to achieve self-defined success in their careers and life. Capably led by volunteer PWG Coordinator Ellen DiPlacido, the group of recently-employed women meets monthly to enjoy expert speakers and networking. Some of the topics presented include the written and unwritten rules of the workplace, financial literacy and work/life balance. Recent statistics show that 76% of PWG members remain employed, 84% are the primary wage-earners of their households, and 75% report that they could handle an unexpected challenge without a problem or with hard work on their part. Below is a photo from the July 2017 PWG Yoga at the Beach event enjoyed by 11 participants.
