Mission and main objectives
The mission of the School of Accountancy is academic excellence characterised by a culture of professionalism, effectiveness and a code of ethics. Academic and professionally directed teaching, research, community service, liaison with the accountancy profession,
ex-students, education authorities and prospective students, are the essence of the main objectives. Training of accountants
The School of Accountancy is accredited to train Chartered Accountants. The training of accountants is accommodated in the School of Accountancy. Close interaction exist with the accounting profession and the Programme Director serves on the Free State
Society of Chartered Accountants. Almost all the lecturing staff have professional qualifications and have therefore also relevant practical experience

Students who did not take or pass Accounting at the National Senior Certificate performance level will register for the EACC1614 in the first semester of their first year. If the module is passed with 60% the student can continue in the BAcc program. If not passed the degree will be converted to the B Com Accounting degree.

The abovementioned degrees offer highly acclaimed professional qualifications and are directed at the professional bodies within the accounting profession, namely the S.A. Institute for Chartered Accountants (SAICA), and the SA Institute for
Professional Accountants (SAIPA). These qualifications enjoy recognition at the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Due to the fact that these bodies enjoy international
status, recognition is given to all the qualifications in the programme.
B Acc Honors and B Com Honors qualification give admission to M Com, M Acc and PhD
Chartered Accountants - CA (SA) After obtaining the B.Acc. and the B.Acc.(Honours) degrees, a candidate may, with special permission, sit for the Part 1 of the qualifying examination of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. After completion of a practical training period as a trainee accountant and after a final examination is passed, such candidates may register as a Chartered Accountant (CA (SA)) at the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants. The C.A.-qualification can be obtained in public practice (as an auditor) or in financial management.
Professional Accountants - SAIPA After obtaining the B.Com. (Accounting) degree or the B.Acc. degree, graduates can, without post-graduate study, qualify themselves as Professional Accountants. A training period prescribed by the SA Institute of Professional Accountants must be completed before registration as a member of SAIPA. Professional Tax Practitioner - SAIT After obtaining the B.Com. (Accounting) degree or the B.Acc. degree, graduates can, with post-graduate study, qualify themselves as Professional Tax Practitioners. A training period prescribed by the SA Institute of Tax Practitioners must be completed before registration as a member of SAIT. Chartered Institute of Management Accountants -CIMA After obtaining the B.Com. (Accounting) degree or the B.Acc. degree, graduates can enrol for the B Com (Honours in Management Accounting), which is in harmony with the Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting (ADMA) of CIMA. By completing the “Strategic Level” of CIMA with practical training after obtaining the honours degree a student can qualify as a Chartered Management Accountant.
