MissionTo empower each young woman to be exactly the person she wants to be.

AcademicsIn 2015, 16 students were honored as AP Scholars by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional performance on the AP exams. These students (8 from the Class

of 2015 and 8 from the Class of 2016) were named AP Scholars, AP Scholars with Honor, AP Scholars with Distinction, and a National AP Scholar.

Sharing Our StoryWe invite you to learn more about Alverno as we share our story ….

In preparation for the 2015-16 school year, Alverno added six new classes to our academic program, including Speech and Debate, Forensic Science, Engineering, Comedy Sportz® (improvisation), AP Calculus BC, and AP U.S. Government.

Alverno offers 25 Advanced Placement and Honors

Courses in every subject with the exception of Theology.

Alverno is extremely proud to have: • 22studentmembersinourchapterofthe

National Honor Society (NHS). Members of NHS are active members in Alverno student government, campus organizations, athletic teams, and the visual and performing arts program, while maintaining impressive academic records. In fact, the average GPA of members of the NHS at Alverno is 4.25!

• 8membersoftheNationalArtHonorSociety(NAHS). NAHS recognizes students who show an incredible ability and interest in art.

• 4membersoftheNationalHonorSocietywhowere also recognized as National Hispanic Scholars by the College Board for their exceptional performance on the PSAT. These girls scored among the top 2.5% of Hispanic and Latino test takers in the region.

Alverno is fortunate to have a strong partnership with Caltech through a number of research programs in which our students have collaborated over the past several years, including the Summer Research Connection and the Solar Energy Activity Lab (SEAL). Recognizing the strength of Alverno’s growing STEM program and the commitment of our students, in 2015 our students were invited to join the Caltech Community Science Academy (CSA). In CSA, students work with mentors on state-of-the- art genetic laboratory methods to identify bacteria cultured from locations on campus, with equipment on loan from Caltech. CSA also includes students working with Caltech to help develop more scientific words in American Sign Language.

In support of our ecology program on campus, the Alverno AP Environmental Science class and Science Club have converted the reflecting pool in front of the Villa del Sol d’ Oro into an aquatic ecosystem. Hardy and tropical pond lilies have been planted and goldfish and mosquito fish were added to create a healthy pond with clear water. Alverno science students also completed two large aquaponics systems to help address the issue of water conservation and the local and global need for fresh and healthy food sources that are affordable. This impacts remote or impoverished communities who may have limited access to clean drinking water or fresh food. Alverno students have also created other projects, including native plant gardens, rain water diversion, water barrels, bat houses, and even birdbaths to create a native ecosystem to support local plant and animal life and to conserve water.

Class of 2015

Alverno continues our wonderful tradition of a strong leadership program on campus, with more than 100 students being formally inaugurated into all branches of the government during the 2015-16 school year. These young women have been, and will continue to be, instrumental in the planning and execution of events and activities on campus.

Emily Lopez ‘16 and Cameron Martinez ‘16 were selected as 2016 Sierra Madre Rose Float Association Princesses. Emily and Cameron attended community and volunteer events within Sierra Madre before riding on Sierra Madre’s float in the 127th Rose Parade on January 1, 2016.

Natalie Hernandez-Barber ‘16, was named to the 2016 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Royal Court. Natalie has always been an active student at Alverno, serving as an Alverno Ambassador, working with Campus Ministry, and being a member of the volleyball, track, and basketball teams. She plans to study broadcasting and communications in college with the hopes of becoming a radio or television host. Natalie and the other members of the Royal Court will have attended over 125 community events by the end of January 2016. The most exciting of these events, though, was certainly riding in the 127th Rose Parade and enjoying the 102nd Rose Bowl Game on January 1, 2016. (FunFact:Natalie’smom,RebeccaHernandez’80,andsisters Sydney ’13 and Madison ‘15 are all Alverno alumnae!)

There is Royalty Among Us!

Leadership

Alverno produces two drama productions each year, including a Fall Play and a Spring Musical. This year, the Fall play was “Our Town... Our Story,”a reimagined version of“Our Town” in which cast members shared their own stories of tragedy and triumph with members of the audience during each show. The Spring Musical will be Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” and this production already promises to be one of the most entertaining shows in recent Alverno history!

Visual and Performing Arts

Prior to the start of the official athletic seasons, Campus Ministry hosts a “Blessing of the Jerseys” event for all our sports teams. The prayer service blesses not only the team and their jerseys for a successful season, but also offers a special blessing for the coaching staff, which currently includes four alumnae and one past parent.

AthleticsAlverno has teams in 6 CIF athletic sports,

including basketball, cross country, soccer,

softball, track and field, and volleyball.

The weekend event, which was planned around Alverno’s celebration of Founders’ Day, began with the dedication of the pillars installed along Michillinda Avenue, which was the first phase of the Master Plan. Pillar donors including alumnae, board members, and past and current parents came to campus to celebrate the completion of this exciting project.

The next day, members of the Alverno community were invited to take part in Alverno’s time-honored celebration of Founders’ Day on the Feast of St. Francis. Students and their families brought their pets to campus for a special Blessing of the Animals during Liturgy and later in the day, students had an opportunity to hear several young alumnae share their own stories about what Alverno has meant to them. Later that evening, a cocktail party was held in the Villa for the Alverno community in honor of Homecoming weekend.

The next morning, the current Alverno Varsity and JV volleyball teams took on more than 16 committed alumnae in an exciting volleyball match. Both teams played hard, but in the end the alumnae took the game!

Homecoming! In 2015, Alverno began a new tradition –

Each year, during the Christmas season, Alverno hosts our traditional Candlelight Celebration. Members of the Alverno community gather at the Villa to participate as everyone travels around the Villa for a living Nativity created by the students. As they process, the Alverno Choirs lead guests in Christmas carols before ending in front of the crèche with the living Nativity.

Christian Service/Campus Ministry

Alverno’s Campus Ministry program plans and organizes18Liturgies,PrayerServices,and Retreats each year.

In a true celebration of the Christmas spirit, this year the Alverno community came together to help adopt four different families for

Christmas through the Los Angeles Children’s Court and the Rowland Heights Family Resource Center. Each class level adopted a particular family and purchased items for the children and parents from their provided wish lists. In addition to the students, the faculty and staff joined in on this Advent Community Project, helping to make this Christmas holiday a memorable one for everyone.

Mary’s Day is an annual tradition at Alverno that takes place each May when we honor Our Blessed Mother during a special celebration. The day is marked by a Mary’s Day Liturgy and the Crowning of Mary, a well-established devotion in the Catholic Church. The celebration continues as students participate in various competitions throughout the day, including athletic competitions against the faculty and staff, dance routines, and performances that not only honor the meaning of Mary’s Day, but also represent Alverno’s mission and the campus-wide theme for the school year.

Alverno Inspires ServiceAt Alverno, we feel that the high school Christian service experience should not just be temporary, but, rather, should inspire our students to approach the rest of their lives with a dedication to serving the communities around them. We are always proud to hear about alumnae who continue to dedicate their time to community service after graduation, such as Julia Morreale ’11, who is currently working with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps at USC. While at the University of San Francisco, Julia participated in many community service opportunities, including the Erasmus Community, a year-long seminar exploring the relationships between ethics, service, and social justice that culminated in a two-week immersion experience serving marginalized communities in Thailand and Cambodia. We are honored to know that Alverno played a role in inspiring Julia to continue her service to others. In her own words, Julia shares, “I’m doing what I’m called to do and I am confident that I am on my way to becoming who I’ve always wanted to be because I didn’t treat service as a requirement. That’s not what it is; that’s not Alverno’s intention, to just make it another box to check. This is an invitation to investigation and to expand your comprehension of common injustices. This is an in-vitation to gather and engage in dialogue with others about what’s going on in our world. This is an invitation to be inspired and to discover your passion and what sets your heart on fire. This is your invitation to become the woman you want to be. So take it!”

Annual Giving CampaignDuring the 2014-15 school year, Alverno celebrated 100% participation from our Board of Trustees, 100% participation from our faculty and staff, and 98% participation from our current parents through donations to the Annual Giving Campaign, which raises unrestricted funds for the school!

Financial Aid and ScholarshipsDuring the 2014-15 school year, over $80,000 in Financial Aid was awarded to 17% of students at Alverno and over $312,000 in Scholarships was awarded to 34% of our students.

Alverno Improvement ProjectFollowing the completion of Phase I of the Master Plan (the installation of pillars and wrought iron fencing along Michillinda Avenue), the feedback Alverno received from our school community was that they would like to see us use our resources to update the existing facilities on campus before we moved on to any new building projects. With that in mind, the Alverno Improvement Project was created to serve as a “bridge” between Phase I and Phase II of the Master Plan.

Funded in part by our Annual Gala and the generosity of current and past parents, the Alverno Improvement Project has enabled us to: • Painttheexteriorof

Planned GivingSara O’Gara ’64 made the decision to include Alverno in her estate plans with a bequest as a result of reflecting on how formative her high school experience was and how it influenced her life in many ways. “Recently, I revised my trust, which got me thinking not only about my family, but also about the institutions and causes that are important to me,” she said. “Alverno immediately came to mind as the life-formative experience that led to a satisfying career and a fulfilling personal life.”

Robin McCarthy P’05 has been a member of the Alverno community for many years and recently decided to add Alverno to her estate plans. When asked why she chose to make a bequest to Alverno, she shared, “Alverno holds a special place in my heart due to the many gifts they have given my daughter, Sara (Class of 2005), from a fine education and quality learning, to friendships and bonds built. The mission statement “to empower women” holds true for Sara and for that I am grateful!”

Debbie Lasham Schweiner ’73 hopes that through her gift, Alverno will continue to encourage young women to follow their dreams and live their lives making a difference doing what they are passionate about. “An all-girls education has many merits, but is rare now-a-days. By contributing to Alverno’s financial future, I am hoping the school will continue its tradition of empowering young women for many years to come.”

Campus Improvements

The Alverno Improvement Project inspired the renovation of the school library into an updated learning space which, at the urging of our school community, became a separate project that has expanded and broadened in scope and is now knownas the Learning Technology Center (LTC) Campaign.

The renovation of our school library into the Learning Technology Center will provide our students, as well as our school community at large, with wireless state-of-the-art technology, access to electronic libraries all over the country, a language lab, a soundproof meeting room for collaborative work, open spaces for quiet study,

and contemporary, lap-top friendly furniture. In addition, by promoting sustainability in all aspects of our project design and maximizing the connection with the natural outdoor beauty of Alverno’s campus, we will be able to respect and celebrate the library’s mid-century architecture, while also maximizing the flexibility and multi-purpose use of the space for a variety of school programs

Through the generosity of the Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation and the Alverno community, including a $10,000 “challenge gift” from a past parent, we have raised over $242,000 in grants, donations, and pledges to date. The Learning Technology Center is slated to open in the fall of 2016.

Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ DayJust in time to usher in the Thanksgiving holiday, Alverno celebrated our wonderful tradition of Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day. With over 115 special guests on campus, Alverno held a Thanksgiving Liturgy that encouraged students to give thanks for everything in their lives, including their grandparents. A special portion of the Liturgy was also dedicated to celebrating and remembering the grandparents who are no longer with us. The day culminated with the entire school community and their guests enjoying a Harvest Feast on the lawns north of the

Villa del Sol d’ Oro. The Feast, organized by the Sophomore class and Advancement Office, was the perfect way to honor the tradition of Thanksgiving and give everyone an opportunity to celebrate together as a

community. In addition to a Feast for our own school community that day, Alverno also shared our many blessings by delivering food items to Union Station Homeless Services for their annual Thanksgiving in the Park event.

Learning Technology Center (LTC)

In 1924, Dr. and Mrs. Barlow purchased the 13-acre property at 675 West Highland Avenue in Sierra Madre, which would eventually become the Villa del Sol d’ Oro. When the Barlows purchased the property, there was no way that they could have ever envisioned the film future their family home would have; yet, the property has long seemed to have a flair for the dramatic.

The property’s first owner, a widow, was reportedly a stage actress who lived in a small house on the expansive property before selling to the newly relocated Barlow Family. Seeking someone who could create the vision he wanted, Dr. Barlow sought out famed Pasadena architect Wallace Neff to design their residence. One of

the Barlows’ primary requests in creating the Villa del Sol d’ Oro was to create a visually appealing and enticing environment in which to entertain their famous Los Angeles friends. Swing music, big bands, and scenes similar to the Great Gatsby played out weekly on the terrace of the Villa.

When Dr. Barlow passed away in 1937, the glitz and glamour of the Villa del Sol d’ Oro disappeared. Mrs. Barlow entertained, but never on such a large scale again. When she sold the property to the Sisters of St. Francis in 1942, the once vibrant, glitzy, over-the-top, celebrity-filled home became one of solitude, piety, and prayer. For many years, the Villa lost its theatrical flair until the 1960s when the Sisters of St. Francis opened the property for filming.

Over the years, Alverno’s Villa del Sol d’ Oro has been given numerous opportunities to return

to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood with many movies, television shows, and music videos being filmed on the property. Today, the Villa continues to be available for film, television, and still shoots and serves as an integral part of daily life at Alverno.

Jaguars for LifeThree-quarters of our Seniors in the Class of 2016 participated in “Jaguars for Life” by donating $20.16 (in honor of their graduation year) to the Annual Giving Campaign as a demonstration of their commitment to philanthropy for their soon-to-be Alma Mater!

Alumnae Giving Back to Alverno

Mentoring Day In addition to the rigorous academic schedules that challenge students at Alverno, Juniors and Seniors must also consider their long-term goals as they begin the college application process and think about what their futures hold. To help support this process, each year a panel of alumnae return to Alverno to participate in our Mentoring Day. During this event, alumnae share information with students about their career experiences, the educational choices they made to support their career path, and some helpful hints about finding the career that is right for them. This is just one of the many ways that Alverno alumnae give back in support of their Alma Mater.

College Panel The thought of going off to college can be exciting, but also a little overwhelming for our graduating seniors and, for this reason, each year we ask a group of recently graduated alumnae to come back on campus and share their college experiences with our students. Questions during the panel session cover every topic from what classes to take and how to land an internship to how to survive dorm life and make the best of difficult roommates. Students have a chance to learn firsthand how to navigate the college process from young women who have a lot of wisdom to impart and are happy to share what they’ve learned with their “little sisters” at Alverno!

Alumna of the YearIn 2015, Terry Merlo Traver ’65 was presented with the “Alumna of the Year” award for her dedication to living the mission of Alverno High School through her commitment to her family, her volunteer efforts in the community, and her commitment to serving Alverno as a proud alumna and current member of the Board of Trustees.
