Every day there is a SPAG activity; and there is an English task.

This week’s SPAG is a final revision of the objectives you have covered this year.

You are nearly at the end of the book! Remember if you haven’t been reading

Carrie’s War then make sure you are reading something daily! At least half an hour

of reading a day will really help you to find new language and sentence structures

so keep reading!

For the final full week of English you will be doing some creative writing using a

video and images to write a story.

Week 14 Reading

This week we would like you to read chapters 12 and 13 of Carrie’s War. If you don’t have the book then the link to the audio book is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjQvn3nwKR4As you read consider these questions: Chapter 12What does the author mean when she says Carrie was ‘brooding’?How did Albert try to resolve the problem of the will?Chapter 13Why was it so surprising that Mr Evans wanted to go on a picnic? What are the differences between Carrie and Nick’s thoughts of their mother and going to Glasgow?

Monday EnglishWatch the video called ‘Marshmallows’ on The Literacy Shed (https://www.literacyshed.com/marshmallows.html).

Today your task is to focus on the monster. Write two character descriptions. The first description should be what the monster looks like at the start when he emerges from the water. The second description should be what the monster looks like after he has eaten that first marshmallow.

You will need to consider the language you use to show the reader what the monster looks like. Remember to assume that the reader can’t see the picture of the monster, so how will you explain the differences between the two times? Don’t just focus on it’s appearance – consider how it moves, how it behaves and what it sounds like.

Tuesday EnglishCreate a timeline of events that happen in the video that you watched yesterday (you might want to watch it again). If you are unable to watch the video then use the images below. Your timeline should include writing but you could include images as well. So you could create a comic strip type timeline with an image and a caption; draw a story map and write a summary of events; draw a timeline as we would in history (a line across the middle of your page), and plot the events in time order.

Thursday EnglishSo far you have thought about the whole story, the monster character and the setting. Today, we would like you to think about the character of the little boy.

Using the grid below (you might want to redraw it so you have more room), describe what he doing in each picture and then write how you think he might be feeling. Try not to just write ‘happy’ or ‘sad’ but up level your writing using a range of different words. For example instead of ‘happy’ you could have ecstatic, delighted, content, excited; and for ‘sad’ you could have miserable, down-hearted, disappointed.

What is he doing?

Emotions – how is he feeling

Friday EnglishToday you are authors! Write a story using the video and images you have used all week. However we do not want you to just re-write the story as this would be far too easy! You can choose from the following options, but whatever you choose to do you must: use your neatest, joined handwriting; check your spellings are accurate; include a range of correctly placed punctuation; choose your language carefully to make your writing interesting for your reader.

Options for writing:

• Retell the story but with a different opening or a different ending – what might happen if it were a different setting or if the boy didn’t run away?

• Re-write the story using different characters – perhaps it is the boy creeping up and the • monster running away?• Write the story from the point of view of the boy – e.g. I was sitting by the fire when….• Write the story from the point of view of the monster – e.g. I saw a little boy toasting his • marshmallow and I…

If you cannot remember the story theme then go back to the video or look at the pictures you used on Tuesday to help you!
