I am constantly amazed at what happens

when a man takes a genuine interest in

another man and reaches out to him with

the love of Christ.

Jesus established this model for ministry

with his twelve disciples. They lived and

ate together, walking the roads of Israel,

talking about his teaching. He set them an example of how to balance work with times

of spiritual retreat—how to lead through service. All along, he was preparing them for

leadership roles they could hardly envision.

Peter and Paul followed in the Lord’s footsteps, as we see in the book of Acts. They

reached out to other men. Peter reached out to Matthias, Barnabas to Paul, Paul to Titus

and Timothy, and those who feared God throughout the synagogues of Asia Minor. From

one group of men and women to another, Christ’s Gospel spread quickly throughout the

Mediterranean world.

Thirty-four years ago, when my life was falling apart, those who stood in Peter and Paul’s

legacy reached out to me. Highly accomplished business professionals, they understood

what I was going through, even better than I did. As a young IBM executive, I was brash,

offending colleagues, and compounding my errors with poor choices. I wasn’t succeeding

at home as a husband or father either.

By the grace of God, I came to know Jesus Christ personally in the home of Arthur and

Nancy DeMoss. They made the gospel their central focus, reaching out with hospitality

and fellowship in their community.

Almost immediately, I started to think about the impact business and professional men

could have on our society if they were effectively taught and developed – if they were

incorporated into a close-knit fellowship like the first disciples enjoyed.

Recently a friend, new to the Friday Morning Men’s Fellowship, lingered after the

meeting and said to me, “I am trying to understand what is going on here—why this is

so powerful?” continued on following page

Because of his theological training, I said, “It’s koinonia” (the New Testament term for

fellowship), a word which I knew he would recognize. We keep the gospel at the center

every Friday morning.

He went home and told his wife, “All I can tell you is that I don’t feel alone anymore!”

The strength he has derived from the Friday Morning Men’s Fellowship has helped enable

this man—as it has so many others—to become an effective leader in a cutting-edge and

highly challenging endeavor.

James Davison Hunter, a sociologist at the University of Virginia, is the author of To

Change the World. Too much energy is being expended by Christians today, Hunter

believes, “on political strategies that don’t work.” What is really needed is a different

paradigm of Christian engagement, what Hunter calls “faithful presence.”

For the past 29 years here in Atlanta, Leadership Ministries, Inc. has encouraged “faithful

presence” as the “long-term, low-pressure” philosophy we employ. Through the lives of

men, their families, and this community we have verified that the faithful presence of a

close-knit men’s fellowship works, just as it worked at Christianity’s beginning.

Now we feel we are called to transfer what we have learned at Leadership Ministries, Inc.

and the Friday Morning Men’s Fellowship to a new generation of leaders and additional

communities. It’s time to extend this “Atlanta secret” and multiply it.

Through this Mission Report we want you to understand who we are and the opportunity

God has given us. We have come this far because of your generous and much appreciated

investments: investments of time, talent, and resources. We need your help, and your

fellowship, to realize this next stage of the ministry…

• TrAnsFer FMMF To A new generation.

• exTend The “Atlanta secret.”• Be “faithfully present” ALWAys.

As you read, think of that cousin in Chicago or that friend in San Francisco who could be

so much more effective if he didn’t feel so alone—or that time in your own life when this

Fellowship was there for you. Let’s continue to be “faithfully present.”

Blessings,

Chris White

I have been part of the “church” my whole life. My parents are still faithful members of the

congregation where I grew up in Nebraska. My parents were always “there for me” growing up

- attending everything: school and sports activities, you name it. My Dad is the best male role

model I have in my life. We talk almost daily, and I regret that we live so far apart. Certainly I

had heard scripture in weekly services as a child and an adult. I could say I was “trained” in the

Bible including a memorable series on Ecclesiastes, which I called the “garage sale” book. (This means that all the stuff

we accumulate in this world is all vanity and that what we treasure today is someone else’s deal in a garage sale

tomorrow.)

But, all this time I had never really felt compelled to read the Bible in a personal and living way

until two years ago when I came to the Friday Morning Men’s Fellowship Alpharetta where

Matt Lacey encouraged me to read and study the book of John. For Christmas I bought

myself a gift, a Bible and began to read. It was then that the Holy Spirit truly reached

Everything was about me! I thought I could do anything… when in fact I could do nothing.

I was in big trouble! But God in his goodness pointed me in the direction of a man who

invited me to a men’s retreat. Something that I read on the retreat convicted me deeply about

the failure that I had been to my parents, my wife, my family and my employees. It was not

long after this that God reached out in the form of an invitation to the Friday Morning Men’s

Fellowship. Between my retreat experience and the Friday morning encounters, I felt God was calling me from the bondage

of a self-centered, controlling and consumptive life, to a new life in Christ. This God who became a man, died for my sins,

and rose from the dead wanted me for His purposes.

Then on a business trip to Parkersburg, WV, I went into a church and, by the grace of God, I asked Jesus Christ to come

into my life. For the first time in my life I immersed myself in scripture. I refashioned my living based on God’s Word,

and the men who befriended me on Friday mornings held me accountable. Based on these new relationships, I came to

realize that I must give up control and surrender my life to God. I would have to let God work through me for His good.

I discovered that the guide for doing this was the Bible. I also found that for each hour of the study of God’s word, I needed

two hours of prayer and meditation to endear it into my heart and mind. Since 1983, the men at the Friday Morning Men’s

Fellowship have always been there with prayer for my family and me. The outreach of love and caring that only a brother

can give. The elder who played the father’s role. The man who had walked the path before me. The men who always

pushed me forward. I am grateful that God put me in this place, to serve, and to be challenged and encouraged. My

heartfelt thanks goes out to these men who help me be the man God called me to be.

out to me to give me a new-found faith and personal relationship with God.

These Friday morning meetings and reading the Word daily have changed

my life in a great way – so much so that I find myself taking a sabbatical

from my business to volunteer for a mission organization serving “special-

needs orphans” in Africa!

Also because of this increased love for Jesus Christ and His love for me, I

have felt compelled to say “yes” to spending time helping orphans in Nicaragua. I initially attended a meeting, thinking that

I could just donate money, things or whatever. But by the end, and without a single hesitation, or looking at my calendar

(or even talking with my wife!), I said “yes” to a missions trip to an orphanage there. And I found that the 50 or so mentally

and physically handicapped children are more of an inspiration to me than I could ever be to them! I now say “yes” to God

because a little boy named Jose Adam, right there in one of the poorest countries of the world experienced God’s love and

happiness through me. Through the study, encouragement and fellowship at the FMMF – I have learned that what is truly

important in life is our relationship with God, how we interact with those we care about, and living and following Him

every day in each area of our lives.

I wished he would have asked me even sooner! You see, I began coming to the Friday

Morning Men’s Fellowship three years ago when Will Brackett invited me to join his table.

Friends of mine from college were also involved, so I did not hesitate to accept his invitation.

My personal relationship with the Lord actually started in 1996 at a summer youth camp

called Covecrest. I was starting 7th grade in the Fall, and my sister, my only sibling, and

I became Christians within a few years of one another. As a person, she inspired me and her love for the Lord made

Christianity very attractive to me. Especially since she paid for me to attend Covecrest out of her personal savings!

The camp speaker talked about a God-shaped void in all of our hearts that we try to fill with various material possessions,

hobbies and destructive idols. He utilized the example of a person who becomes dissatisfied with his new, push

lawnmower when his neighbor purchases a new, riding lawnmower. This simplistic message cut deep. I realized that

I was longing inside for something more out of life… At the end, with tears in my eyes, God compelled me to pray the

prayer the speaker led us in and I began my wonderful and tough journey with God, a true relationship with Him. For

the past few months I have been serving with Mike Davis as a greeter at the Men’s Fellowship in Buckhead. And I really

look forward to being one of the first faces the men see when they come in. Bob Day and Jim Gray have inspired me too

on the importance of the first impression when a new man comes to the FMMF.

I serve by welcoming men on Fridays, but that is not the only reason I attend–I also come to receive! Every week the

messages by various speakers apply to my life regarding real issues I deal with every day in life and work. Will and Chris

White have taught me to facilitate the table study, where we discuss thought-provoking questions about the lesson.

We bring our knowledge, preparation, and life experience to sharpen and encourage each other’s daily Bible study and

integrate the Truth into our lives in practical ways.

I also enjoy fellowship with the older men who have been walking with the Lord for many years—men with knowledge

and experience who inspire me to do all of my work with all of my heart and encourage me in my faith. Although I

should be at my most fatigued, Friday has become my easiest morning to rise! When I leave for work after the fellowship

I feel energized because of the active presence of God from the men and the Word that I take with me from our time

together at the FMMF each week.

We remain steadfast in keeping the mission focus of Leadership Ministries, Inc.:

To Develop and Equip Men to Lead in Their Marriage, Family and Business.

This has remained possible because of the diligence of you as the investors,

board, staff and volunteers listed on the pages of this report. Twenty-three years

ago, the Friday Morning Men’s Fellowship changed my world. I used to see things

through my own lens – “what I could do for God.” Through this ministry,

including making it my highest giving priority, I now understand that God

does not “need me,” but that He has given me a purpose to reflect His glory in

my marriage, family and business. Thankfully, now my own sons participate

with other young men in this fellowship. Through the viewpoint of this next

generation we are all bringing the light of Jesus Christ into their daily lives and

the lives of others.

This report, although not a particularly rosy picture at this time, does encourage

me. The last two years have been difficult financially for Leadership Ministries,

Inc. as contributions are down, while at the same time, we have still been

trying to reach and impact even more men and their lives. However, I am

encouraged that we made it through this trying time with the mission intact, a

strengthened team, and a leaner cost structure. We are going to “do more with

less” in the years to come while continuing to expand locations, focus on training

table leaders, and growing the Foundation and Mark Christopher Fund. The

resources of the Foundation, through the foresight of Jim and Claudia O’Hanlon

and others, have sustained the last few years’ operations with this “rainy day”

resource. As Jim put it in his letter to the Board in 2004, “I know that each

of you believe as I do that the work of Leadership Ministries, Inc. is vital and

strategic.”

Now, in 2011, we are making some necessary moves to reduce the budget by

$100,000 – to be accomplished with great thought and counsel by the Board and

the staff. It is only with God’s hand on this ministry that these things will come

to pass. This is our mission together as we all move forward To Change the World.

Mark Christopher was a wonderfully optimistic person and a friend to all who knew him. He was a

devoted husband to Nancy and father to Logan and Coleman, a top-notch commercial real estate broker,

and an avid sportsman–hunting, fishing and golf were his favorites.

What an irony that this man with so much optimism and vitality, who never smoked, would contract

lung cancer at the age of 40. Although battling courageously for months against this disease, Mark died

one month shy of his 42nd birthday on May 22, 1998.

During his illness, Mark set up a voice-mail hotline where over 10,000 callers heard the message of hope

in the gospel of our Lord. The closer he got to his departure from this world, the more intense was his

faith. At the end, Mark’s clear message was this: “Don’t think that you will have more time. Make your

life count now.” This is a good message for every one of us to think about.

Mark was a key leader of Leadership Ministries and served on the Board of Directors. He brought a rare

combination to men: he was a real friend, showing a true interest in their well being; and he told them

the truth about eternity and salvation through Jesus Christ.

Mark also had a special interest in men who are in transition. Before he died, he asked that donations

in his memory be sent to Leadership Ministries. The response of his friends was most generous, and the

Board established the “Mark Christopher Fund for Men in Transition.”

Because of the stress that comes with career and marital trauma, a man can become overwhelmed and

discouraged. We have been serving men and their families with career guidance, professional licenses,

and housing. Some have given men jobs! This practical support–along with a listening ear–is done in the

spirit of Mark Christopher’s life and message.

This year, 2011, marked a huge milestone for the fund.

We raised an additional $45,ooo and now have a balance

of $81,ooo. We will continue to grow the fund and

support men by carrying on Mark’s legacy.
