Man on Fire – Mise en Scene

The lighting in this shot is very effective due to its use of shadows and the colour blue. Creasy is shown in complete darkness and this is contrasted against the baby blue scene. The effect of this is that is makes Creasy seem quite dangerous and mysterious which serves to fuel excitement in the audience.

This is probably one of my favourite shots in the trailer due to its use of rule of thirds – which is mentioned in the ‘Man on Fire – Effective Shots’ post and its use of lighting. The shot has a saturated effect added to it which is made significant when trying to portray Pita in a specific light. In this case the golden tint makes her seem innocent and quite angelic; the audience would be forced in to liking her character and so sympathising with any danger that she is caught up with. The flower which she is holding out is also a vital part of the shot due to its connotations of innocence and purity; characteristics which can be attributed to her youthful character.

A similar ligting key in used in the shot shown above but this time it has been used for a slightly different effect. The woman in the clip is a nun and so the golden saturation works well with the imagery of religion.

Scott also makes uses of chaotic weather to help emphasise the danger in the trailer. The above print screen reveals Creasy in the midst of thunder and lightning which instantly highlightings endangerment and foreboading trouble. The night scene further adds to this due to its connotation of evil and darkness; the audience would therefore be kept on their edge of their seats as the events of the trailer unfold.

The second half of the trailer is dominated by fire, crashes and explosions which draws direct links to the title of the film. As you can see above, the explosion is quite disastrous and so this heghtens the element of danger; this is important as this stage as the trailer comes to an end. The audience ae left with the lasting impression of chaos of violence, which would further persuade them in wanting to watch the film.
