Miscarriage Miscarriage is, sadly, an all too common event, with about one in every five pregnancies ending this way. Happily, the majority of women who miscarry once or even twice go on to have successful outcomes in subsequent pregnancies. A small minority however will experience what is termed recurrent miscarriage. This means three or more consecutive miscarriages, and it is at this stage that investigations into possible causes are usually instigated. For women over 35 or those who conceived through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) it is advisable to seek specialist advice after a second consecutive miscarriage. A definite cause of recurrent miscarriage can be established in approximately 70% of cases, after a thorough evaluation. The routine work-up for recurrent miscarriage begins with a detailed history of both partners and physical examination of the female partner. A complete list of investigations will include tests to exclude various genetic abnormalities, endocrine, anatomical (uterine abnormalities), immune, thrombophilic (blood clotting) and infectious causes. Supportive antenatal care from an early stage of pregnancy has been shown to improve the chances of a live birth. The GyneHealth specialist consultant team provide appropriate evaluation, close follow-up and ultrasound scans in the first trimester of pregnancy and continued emotional support to ensure the best possible outcome.
