Any child interested in participating in these workshops is encouraged to attend. Please choose workshops from your grade group. The workshops are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. *You must list at least 4 choices, 3 for grades 6-8. Every effort will be made to give students their preference.
You will be notified if there is a problem, and your enrollment will be refunded if there is no space. Registrations can be mailed to the address listed on the form or completed online at
www.ctgifted.org.

famous. Learning really takes off as we

connections and a story included in this
exciting hands-on, inquiry based

Pickleball is a fun sport that combines

The Hive and the Honey Bee
Honey bees are an important part of our
everyday lives – from the foods we eat
to the plants around us. This workshop
provides an in-depth look at a bee’s life
both inside the bee hive and as part of
the honeybee colonies. Participants will
extract honey from honey combs using
a hand-cranked honey extractor.

Reversing Turning Car
Build a car with a remote switch that
moves it forward and backwards. A
clever arrangement in the rear axle
causes the car to turn right and left in
reverse. Participants will learn to
steer with the switching mechanism
that they have made.

This workshop gives children an
opportunity to work hands on alongside
an actual veterinarian. Examine live
animals like a veterinarian would,
including listening to a dog’s heartbeat.
Children learn the proper care for basic
domestic animals and the proper way to

discover which foods/plants can be
dangerous to dogs and cats.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS by Dr. Elizabeth Feser In presenting this year’s award, Joseph Cirasuolo, Executive Director of the CT Association of Public School Superintendents, said “Dr. Feser has
exemplified the integrity, knowledge, vision, collaboration communication skills, work ethic, human goodness and passion for the welfare of
children that are hallmarks for very effective superintendents of schools. Her leadership of a school system, therefore, is a model for how
Superintendents can and should lead.” As a long-time education administrator, Dr. Feser will provide her observations on education.
Dr. Elizabeth Feser has been the Milford School District’s Superintendent since 2011. She was the Windsor, CT Superintendent for 9 years prior.
This past year, she was elected the 2014 Superintendent of the Year by her fellow peers throughout the State of Connecticut.
WORKSHOP #1 by Katie Augustyn –Gifted 101 Everything you always wanted to know about gifted kids! In this session, we will discuss the characteristics of gifted children, including:
asynchronous development and Dabrowski’s Overexcitabilities; their educational as well as social and emotional needs, and how best to
meet those needs; Fixed vs. Growth Mindset; and resources that are available to parents and educators. Katie Augustyn served as President of the Connecticut Association for the Gifted and is currently VP Development. She served four years on the
Board of Directors of the National Association for Gifted Children. Katie recently completed a Masters Degree in Organizational Leadership at
The Graduate Institute in Bethany, CT, has presented at numerous state, regional and national conferences, and provides consulting for school
districts in Connecticut and New York state regarding improving services for gifted and high-ability students.
WORKSHOP #2 by Mark Ahrens– Unlocking the Secrets of Common Core Math Are you baffled by your child's Math? Is the Common Core causing you heartburn? Have you asked: "Why don't they teach Math like
they used to?" Attend this Minds in Motion session for a lively, interactive session designed to get you familiarized with both the Common
Core and the new methods for teaching Math. You will come away with strategies to help you support your child more successfully in
their Math journey. Mark Ahrens is the owner of Mathnasium, a math learning center for kids K-12. Mark also leads Math and computer programming enrichment
classes at local schools and frequently contributes editorial articles on educational subjects effecting local area students.
WORKSHOP #3 by CT PTA – Understanding CT’s Common Core Standards Connecticut PTA continues to have a leading role in the discussions regarding the development and implementation of the Common Core
State Standards Initiative (CCSSI or Common Core), in particular, through the creation of grade level guides for parents and community
educators. This workshop provides an overview as to what Common Core truly is, why Common Core is being implemented and how it
may change their child's educational experience.
The Connecticut PTA exists as a source of information and support to all local PTA units and members. As a 501(c)(3), they support the efforts of
their members as they work for the health, education, and welfare of children and youth around the state.
WORKSHOP #4 by Nicole Schmidt – The Value Tree: Cultivating Kids’ Values for Happiness & Success Moral equity – a basic resource we should have as a nation – is an expected outcome of our educational system. But it is not evident today.
We need to teach these values to add to our moral equity account. Value lessons add to all children’s storehouse of resources essential to
facing the endless real-life challenges that lie before them. Learn how practical exercises, role play scenarios, and brainstorming sessions
can reinforce values for children.
Nicole Schmidt started her career in education as a high school history teacher with Teach for America in Ruleville, Mississippi. From there, she
honed her study and understanding of the Middle East as a Middle Eastern Specialist with the U.S. Department of State. She developed her home
school language arts curriculum, The Value Tree books, through teaching her two children at home. She now works as an author and consultant
with schools, parents, and the YMCA on the inclusion of her values-based language arts curriculum in everyday study.
WORKSHOP #5 by Leslie Darling – Becoming a Parent Leader and Advocate The Parent Leadership Training Institute seeks to enable parents to become leading advocates for children. This workshop provides an
overview of the PLTI curriculum that is designed to provide parents with the civic leadership knowledge and experience so that they will
engage in civic life and become effective leaders and child advocates. Leslie Darling is the PLTI Coordinator for Milford, CT and is a Case Manager for the Milford Health Department.
WORKSHOP #6 by Scott Hobson – Motivating Minds: Unlocking your Child’s Learning Potential This session explores numerous ways to reach learners in different and interesting ways. Parents will learn to assist their children in
developing fluency in critical thinking and writing. Participants will leave with a multitude of strategies designed to enhance student
performance both in and outside the classroom. Scott Hobson is an educational consultant who has presented at national conferences such as NAGC, Arizona Gifted and California Gifted, to
name a few. Prior to becoming an educational consultant, Mr. Hobson served as Master Teacher, Middle School Assistant Principal, and
Elementary School Principal. Previously Mr. Hobson was a 6th grade teacher in the South Brunswick Township School District in New Jersey.
WORKSHOP #7 by Nicole Larizza and Michelle Ryan– Brain Food: Maximize Your Child’s Potential, One
Meal at a Time Join an exciting workshop focused on food, meal, and preparation ideas using foods that are associated with boosting brain function and
improving memory and concentration. The program combines nutrition education with practical demonstrations and samples of brain-boosting
recipes.
Nicole Larizza is a Clinical Nutritionist and Health & Wellness Coordinator for ShopRite of Milford. She holds a Masters of Science in Human
Nutrition, and has been featured in local and national media for her groundbreaking approaches to disease prevention through good nutrition
during the childhood and adolescent years. Michelle Ryan is the in-store Chef, Culinary Instructor, and Prepared Foods Manager for the five
Garafalo family ShopRites (Milford, Stratford, Hamden, West Haven, & East Haven).

of the workshops, unless prior arrangements have been made. Grades 6-8 children
will take one 3-hour workshop. You must make at least 4 choices, and up to 6.
