MirrorView Software

MirrorView SoftwareMirrorView software consists of a storage-system driver, a user interface (UI), and a command line interface (CLI) for managing the MirrorView functionality.

MirrorView Driver For a CX400, CX500, CX600, or CX700 storage system to participate in a MirrorView mirror, the MirrorView driver must be enabled on the storage system. The driver is enabled when the MirrorView Enabler, which is part of the MirrorView kit, is installed on the storage system. If you ordered MirrorView with a new CX400, CX500, CX600, or CX700 storage system, the MirrorView Enabler can be installed during storage-system initialization.

Once MirrorView is enabled, it stays enabled even if you upgrade the FLARE™ Operating Environment software on the storage system.

MirrorView UI The MirrorView UI requires the Management UI, which is part of Navisphere® Manager. For you to use these UIs, they must be enabled on the storage system at which you will point your browser. Prior to shipment, both UIs are enabled on CX500 and CX700 storage systems, but not enabled on CX400 and CX600 storage systems. Both UIs are enabled on a CX400 or CX600 storage system when the Manager Enabler, which is part of the Manager kit, is installed on the storage system. If you ordered Manager with a new CX400 or CX600 storage system, the Manager UI can be installed during storage-system initialization.

Once the UIs are enabled, they stay enabled even if you upgrade the FLARE Operating Environment software on the storage system.

MirrorView CLI MirrorView CLI is part of the Navisphere CLI, which ships with the Navisphere Host Agent kits.

MirrorView Software CDs

MirrorView Software CDsThe table below lists the software required for MirrorView. The MirrorView CD ships with the MirrorView kit and the Manager CD with the Manager Enabler ships with the Manager kit.

InstallationIMPORTANT - When you install new software on a storage system, do not remove or reboot an SP while installation is in progress. Doing so may leave the storage system in a transient state where it cannot be restarted. Wait for the entire upgrade process to complete and automatically reboot the SPs.

Installation Prerequisites◆ EMC Navisphere® Manager enabled on the SPs in at least one

storage system in the Navisphere domain containing the storage systems that will participate in the same mirror. (For information on Navisphere domains, see the EMC Navisphere Security Administrator’s Guide on the documentation CD.)

Prior to shipment, Manager is enabled on CX500 and CX700 storage systems, but not enabled on CX400 and CX600 storage systems. Manager is enabled on these systems when the Manager Enabler is installed. The Manager Enabler can be installed on CX400 and CX600 storage systems at the same time as the MirrorView Enabler. Once Manager is enabled, it stays enabled even if you upgrade the FLARE Operating Environment on the storage system.

Installation

◆ Access Logix™ software enabled on each storage system that runs MirrorView.

Prior to shipment, Access Logix is enabled on CX500 and CX700 storage systems, but is not enabled on CX400 and CX600 storage systems. Access Logix is enabled when the Access Logix Enabler is installed. If you ordered Access Logix with a new CX400 or CX600 storage system, the Access Logix Enabler can be installed during storage-system initialization. Once Access Logix is enabled, it stays enabled even if you upgrade the FLARE Operating Environment on the storage system.

◆ One server, connected to one of the storage systems (a second server, connected to the other storage system, is optional). Both storage systems must be in the same Navisphere domain.

◆ A Fibre Channel connection between the two storage systems (direct, switch, or IP connection, shown on the following pages)

CAUTION!Currently, MirrorView and SAN Copy™ software cannot share the same SP port. Before installing the MirrorView software, you must deselect any MirrorView ports that a SAN Copy session is using. Otherwise, any SAN Copy sessions using the MirrorView port will fail.

Cable Connections Between SPs at the MirrorView SitesMirrorView uses a front-end port on each storage processor (SP) as a communication channel between the storage systems in a remote mirror configuration. This port is called the mirror port in this document. The mirror ports for the different storage systems are

• Port 3 for a CX600 or CX700 SP

• Port 1 for a CX400 or CX500 SP

For MirrorView to work correctly, the SP A mirror port at one site must be connected to the SP A mirror port on the other site and the SP B mirror port at one site must be connected to the SP B mirror port at the other site. The connections can be either direct or through a switch fabric. Either type of connection can be Fibre Channel (FC) or Fibre Channel over IP using FC-to-IP devices.

Installation

Direct Remote Mirror ConnectionsA direct mirror configuration consists of one primary storage system and one secondary storage system. The remote mirror connections must be between

• SP A mirror ports on the primary and secondary storage systems

• SP B mirror ports on the primary and secondary storage systems

Figure 1 shows a sample direct remote mirror configuration.

Figure 1 Sample Direct Remote Mirror Configuration

Fabric Remote Mirror ConnectionsA fabric mirror configuration consists of one primary storage system and up to four secondary storage systems. The fabric connections must be as follows:

• SP A mirror port on the primary storage system must be connected to the same switch fabric as the SP A mirror port on the secondary storage system.

• SP B mirror port on the primary storage system must be connected to the same switch fabric as the SP B mirror port on the secondary storage system.

The fabric to which SP A mirror ports are connected can be the same fabric or a different fabric than the one to which the SP B mirror ports are connected.

Installation

You must zone the mirror port switch connections as follows:

• A separate zone for the SP A mirror port on the primary storage system and the SP A mirror port on each secondary storage system.

• A separate zone for the SP B mirror port on the primary storage system and the SP B mirror port on each secondary storage system.

For example, if you have primary storage system 1 and secondary storage systems 2 and 3, you need the following two zones:

• Zone 1 - SP A mirror port on storage system 1 and SP A mirror ports on storage systems 2 and 3.

• Zone 2 - SP B mirror port on storage system 1 and SP B mirror ports on storage systems 2 and 3.

Mirror ports can also receive host (server) I/O. If you want to use a mirror port for host I/O you will need a separate zone for each server HBA port and each mirror port with which you want the server to communicate.
