what Halloween was, but I can’t really blame them, Guwahati doesn’t really “celebrate” Halloween and other such western holidays. No matter, me and my pumpkin-shaped empty bag for candy scuttled on.

I stepped down to the ground floor, and came upon the Apartment 007.

“James Bond, hopefully you have some candy”, I muttered to myself. Saying this I punched the black doorbell. A hideous laughter cackled on the other side of the brown oak door.

“Oh Goodie!” I wondered to myself, “Someone’s in the Halloween spirit. The door flung open. A small regular apartment greeted me. The lights were off but I could see a faint green light glwoing in the washroom.

“So he wants to scare me eh?” I thought to myself as I entered, shutting the door behind me. I walked towards the light, the washroom door ajar and the gap releasing green onto the floor.

Suddenly the door scraped open and a pale, translucent man walked out. He was wearing a bow-tie, a black blazer, a formal shirt and a pair of pants. He was also wearing a golden necklace and three multi-colored rings. Oh, and he also held his head in his hands.

“HOLY KAMAR-TAJ!” the man screamed.

“OH MY GOD!” I screamed, my feet stuck on the ground as if fevi-kwik had been used to glue them down.

About thirty seconds later the head-in-hand apparition started coughing, dropping his head on the floor and yelping, before continuing with the fit. At this point I basically collapsed on the ground, the mere shock of the event too much for my brain to handle.

“Hello” said the floating head in a sad, resigned voice as I woke up. “Sorry if I scared you, it’s just that I end to scream if I see strangers in my living room...” he apologised.

I looked on, unable to speak. I was in an apartment with an apologising floating head. What was I supposed to say?”

“It’s ok, you can leave now. I don’t expect you to stay” he said in a depressed voice. The apartment door a little way above my head opened up. I got up, still in the living room where I had fainted.

My throat was sore after the screaming, and my house was ten floors above. The ghost did seem polite enough so I asked, “May I have some water?”

“Sure!” came a slightly hopeful reply. The kitchen lights lit up and the headless body of the head that floated above me rushed around and brought me a glass of water. I lifted it up and felt the cool drops float down the throat.

“So...you’re a ghost?” I asked, he looked really sad and I felt bad for him.

“Yeah, and you’re a human skeleton I suppose?” he asked. I realised that I was in a Halloween costume. I told him it was Halloween night.

“What’s Halloween?” he asked. “They don’t celebrate it in my village”

I proceeded to explain to him what Halloween was. o be fair he was the first person genuinely interested, albeit a floating head.

“Wow!” he exclaimed as I finished. His eyebrows disappeared in his hair. “A festival for my kind! Maybe I could go out next time, pretending I’m in a costume!” he exclaimed. “We must discuss this, come and dine with me!”

I was going to decline but a delicious smell wafted through the air. I couldn’t resist and took a seat.

“Ok, but I’m a vegetarian” I warned him.

“No worries, I’m a Jain” the ghost replied. He settled his head on the table as his body ran to and fro, gathering, serving and then feeding the former food as we conversed. I loved every part of the delightful meal.

“Oh! Look at the time, your mom must be worried!” Rahul (As I learned his name was) jumped. Kind of ironic, as that was supposed to be what the kid who had wandered into a ghost’s house was supposed to say and not the other way around.

With a sad face the ghost showed me to the self-opening door. His longing face made me realise

how bad he wanted contact with the outer world.

So I decided I would do it, I would find a way to make Halloween more popular in my building, hopefully making it well known enough that the ghost may pass off his body for a ridiculously realistic costume.

So that’s what I did and for the entire year I’ve been campaigning. I had informed all my neighbours’ children, I had spread flyers and done whatever I could. This Halloween, moment of truth, I pulled a reluctant Rahul outside his recluse and took him to Apartment 010, I had campaigned hard here, Mrs Sharma opened the door and filled my bag with candy.

Rahul’s happiness knew no bounds, and his happy expression made me

realise the need to pen down this story.

To all of you I request, celebrate Halloween in you buildings and localities. You may not know it, but a polite floating Jain head may need your help is exploring the world without scaring everyone.
