Miss Campbell
Please remember our children are brought in from the yard for 8.45am and doors close
promptly at 9.00am. We are expecting learning to start straight away. The staff will be on the yard by 8.40am, please avoid keeping the teacher talking if at all possible so as to avoid the children being taken into class late. If you need to speak to one of the teachers before school please come to the front office by 8.30am or we can arrange for the teacher to call you later in the day.

Important message from Cheshire East regarding fixed penalty notices for holidays from school We are unable to give permission for family holidays unless in exceptional circumstance. All requests must be submitted to the school office in writing at least three weeks prior to the holiday. As you may be aware Cheshire East put on hold the issuing of Fixed Penalty Notices in May 2016 due to the case of Isle of Wight vs Platt which was highlighted in the national news. The case was found in favour of the Isle of Wight Local Authority. As a result of this judgement, the
policy will recommence on 1st September 2017. As from 1st September 2017 any requests made for a holiday to be taken in the academic year 2017-18 or thereafter, which is not considered by the Head teacher to be exceptional in circumstances, should be recorded as unauthorised, and a Fixed Penalty Notice may be issued by the LA.
HOLIDAYS/UNAUTHORISED ABSENCE
Please bear in mind that in line with our attendance policy, Parents/carers should ensure wherever possible that all medical or dental appointments are made outside of school time. For all medical or dental appointments during the school day an appointment card or letter from the specialist must be received by the school to be retained on file. Thank you for your full co-operation.
Being late: Gets your child’s day off to a bad start;
Can be embarrassing for your child; Will be noticed by other children who might
make negative comments; May lead to your child losing confidence;
May lead to your child feeling confused all day as they may have missed out on vital
instructions, information and news at the start of the day;
Disrupts the lesson for everyone; Can cause your child to fall behind with his or her work – just arriving 15 minutes late a day equals 2 weeks’ worth of lost learning a year!

PHASE 2 NEWS
EYFS NEWS
EYFS have had a super first week back! We've started reading our new book Meg and Mog. The children have loved acting out the story in our new role play area and we have been making lots of spells and potions. We've also enjoyed making our very own broomsticks! Using a range of materials we have worked hard to assemble them all by ourselves, we can't wait to take them home. For Halloween we had a very special stay and make session which all parents of nursery and reception children were invited to. Some of the activities we loved were exploring pumpkins, making witches with 2D shapes, printing pumpkin pictures and making spiders with playdoh. A huge thank you to those who attended, the children absolutely loved showing you all their
new spooky learning.
This week has been an exciting week across Phase 2 as we started our new topic on 'Space'. We started with History, looking at significant events and individuals such as Neil Armstrong walking on the moon. The children acted out the journey to space. Our role play area will help to keep this topic alive as the children can re-enact life in space and the challenges along the way. Through our reading and writing lessons we have been building up to creating our own stories with a beginning, middle and end. Looking at a range of fiction books during guided reading sessions has helped us to identify what makes a good story and how the characters
and setting link. Can you identify the setting and main character in your stories at home?
PHASE 4 NEWS
PHASE 3 NEWS
We have had a very busy first week back in phase 3! The children presented their homework
projects on the first day back where they shared PowerPoints, posters, models and even puppets of their favourite animals. Our new writing genre is non-chronological reports so the research undertaken for their projects will be very useful. We had the opportunity to visit Crewe Veterinary Surgery this week in order to give us a greater understanding of how animals are cared for when they are poorly. We were shown around by two veterinary nurses, Debbie and Simone. We got to view X-rays and take a look inside a real vet’s operating theatre! We had a super time! In addition to this, year 3 have been tasting and making their own healthy pizzas this week and
year 4 have been studying and recreating the artwork of Van Gogh!
We have had an exciting first week back in Year 5 and 6. This week we had a visit from a company called ‘As Creatives’ where we enjoyed taking part in a history workshop linked to the Saxons and Vikings. The children enjoyed taking part in a range of activities and games
linked to the topics and learnt lots of interesting facts. Did you know that the Viking God Freya had a chariot drawn by two cats? Also this week, we finished creating and painting our Viking shields. We worked in pairs to papier-mache out shields and then paint them to follow our original designs.

BRIERLEY SPORTS
On Wednesday 18th October, Year 5 took part in a Handball Competition which concluded their unit of work in PE for this halfterm. Every Year 5 child took part in a series of short games lasting 5 minutes each. Handball is a fast-paced, exciting game in which there are many goals scored and it has proved to be extremely popular with the children. In the first round of games, Anderton opened up with a strong 3-1 victory against Tatton, whilst Jodrell and Delamere could not find a winner in their game (0-0), despite both having plenty of chances. In the next round of games, we went goal crazy between Tatton and Jodrell, with Tatton showing some clinical finishing to win 4-2. In the other game, Anderton made it two wins on the bounce with a hard-fought 2-0 win against Delamere, who were extremely unlucky not to score- they hit the post and the crossbar but could not find the back of the net! In the final round Tatton sqeezed past Delamere 3-2 in a game that was end-to-end and had both teams leading at different points in the match. Anderton needed victory against Jodrell to claim a clean sweep and they did just that with a comfortable 2-0 win. The results were ANDERTON (4pts), Tatton (3pts), Delamere (2pts) and Jodrell (1pt). Well done to the winning Anderton team: Matthew Thompson, Alexis Edwards, Lewis Farr, Carly Taylor, Lewis Plant and Talia Wilcox. The Year 6’s went on their residential to Colomendy in North Wales just before half-term and in keeping with tradition the pupils took part in the House Residential Quiz. Each team answered 15 questions, some based on general knowledge, some were based around the Year 5/6 teachers and their hobbies and the final question was to predict who would win in a staring competition between Mr Fletcher and Ashton Hodgkinson... Ashton won by the way!! There was a fun element to the quiz and the children enjoyed lots of the questions and finding out about their teachers! Well done to DELAMERE who were the winning team (4pts), ahead of Jodrell (3pts), Anderton (2pts) and Tatton (1pt). Class House Points: Week commencing Monday 2nd October: ANDERTON (4pts), Tatton (3pts), Jodrell (2pts) and Delamere (1pt). Week commencing Monday 9th October: ANDERTON (4pts), Delamere (3pts), Tatton (2pts) and Jodrell (1pt). The first half term has seen the lead change hands numerous times and we are now just a few weeks away from crowning our Autumn Term Champions. The scores as of Friday 20th October were as follows: 1st Place: ANDERTON (48pts) 2nd Place: Tatton (41pts) 3rd Place: Delamere (40pts) 4th Place: Jodrell (36pts) Well done to everyone in ANDERTON house for an excellent first half term of the year... the question is will we see their blue colours on the trophy at the end of the Autumn Term, or will the other houses respond and put some pressure on them? Mr Foulkes

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CLUB
UNIFORM
It’s good to see so many of our children looking smart in neat school uniform. This is an important way that we represent our school and so we think that it important to keep up high standards. Please check that your children are wearing the correct school sweatshirts or cardigans. (No pre-2013 logo). White polo shirts should be worn under the sweatshirts, not dress shirts with collars or long sleeves. It is nice and warm in school, so the children do not need lots of extra layers when inside. Flat black shoes (not boots) should be worn. No brightly coloured/patterned socks or tights please. Socks should be plain grey, black or white. Thank you for helping us to maintain our standards of uniform. Please also make sure that your child has a PE kit in school. It’s best to leave the kit in school every day during the week and take it home for washing at the weekend.
Please check that labels haven’t washed off: Please check that all of your child’s clothes are clearly labelled so that we can return them if they get lost. If you’ve written your child’s name in biro it might be worth checking that it is still legible as biro tends to wash off over time. A polite reminder that children should not be wearing earrings to school. Please make sure that if your child’s hair is shoulder length that it is ‘tied up’ for PE.
Thank you for all the ways that you continue to support the school. We look forward to
another happy and successful term!
Breakfast and After School Club Staff are always happy to welcome the children to Breakfast
and After School Club but please be mindful, that these sessions need to be booked and paid for in advance in order for us to ensure the correct staffing ratios.
POLITE REMINDERS
There are so many procedures and protocols linked to school life we thought it would be helpful to put in a few gentle reminders of how you can help things run smoothly for both us and yourselves: • Dinner money to be paid in advance
• Trip and residential monies to be paid on time • Nursery fees and Breakfast/After school club fees to be paid in advance – these are not
funded through school funds • Children off school ill – phone school office in the morning; for sickness/ diarrhoea they
must stay away until 48 hours clear of last episode • Different collection arrangements for end of school day – phone and let us know • Arrive at school on time so that the teachers can take your child into school. • No dogs on the school playground or near school gates – including being carried. • No bicycles or scooters to be ridden on school playground • Read the newsletter– and encourage others to do the same please! We know there is a
lot to remember, but if you are not sure about anything then please ask.

Friends of Brierley 2017-18
CAN YOU HELP US WITH FUNDRAISING THIS YEAR? REASONS WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP!
As parents, you are AUTOMATICALLY a member of the (Parent Teacher Association) – Friends of Brierley… your voice counts. Our FOB depends on a continual cycle of
parental involvement. As children reach their final year and leave, so do their parents. The staff support us when possible, but without all your support, we have no
FOB – WE REALLY DO NEED YOUR SUPPORT.
FOB is a group of parents who work together for the benefit of Brierley Primary School. Some of them are full-time parents, some work part-time or work full-time. NONE are specialists in fundraising. Taking an active role with the FOB is critical to
your children’s success, so we’ve compiled a list of reasons why helping the FOB will greatly improve your child’s school experience. YOU ARE VITAL TO THE SUCCESS OF THE SCHOOL
• Without the funds raised by the FOB, your child would not have had the benefits of: whole school trips, special end of term treats, Christmas Party, leaver’s party etc.
IT’S TOTALLY FLEXIBLE!
• There are a variety of small ways in which you can help and be involved – from designing a poster, looking for donations, distributing letters in the school, cleaning
up after an event, helping out on a stall…so many ways.
• Giving up just 30 minutes of your time to help the FOB is invaluable. If everyone could spare 30 minutes a term to help, just think what we could achieve.
YOU’LL FEEL MORE CONNECTED
• There’s no better way to know what events are being planned, have your say or make new fundraising suggestions, than by offering your help and support.
A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO NETWORK
• You will be part of a network of people who all share a common goal of improving the school for all our children.
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
• By volunteering to help the FOB, you’ll be able to use whatever skills you have for a worthy cause.
BE A ROLE MODEL
• By getting involved with our FOB, you’ll show your children that not only are they important to you, but their education is as well.
• Your children will see you playing an active part in making their education more varied.
• Getting involved illustrates good teamwork and community spirit. WHAT THE FOB DOES AFFECTS EVERY PARENT (AND PUPIL)
• Your voice matters – Your ideas and involvement can help improve the quality of education for all the children at our school.
• See the smiles on their faces and know that you have played a part in making school a little more comfortable and fun!
IT’S FUN! • Help plan fun events and suggest NEW fun ways to raise funds
• Get your whole family involved!
FINALLY…
Our children are only at school for a relatively short time. FOB events such as Christmas and Easter Bingo, Christmas and Summer Fairs will be remembered fondly
by our children for a lifetime. The trips and resources the FOB helps fund, make learning even more engaging. Help us continue to create lasting memories for our
children.
You can donate: • Coffee, sugar, biscuits and squash • Jam and porridge oats • Tinned meat, potatoes, vegetables and beans • Cook in sauces for pasta and curry • Pasta, rice and noodles • Salt, pepper and condiments
Please check the expiry date before you donate!
Brierley Primary will be collecting food donations to help the needy in our local area. Our food collection will be given to the Salvation Army who will distribute the food to local families.
Donate by Thursday 9th November
