THE CHALLENGE Organizations are increasingly looking to leverage cloud computing to improve IT agility and to support dynamic business priorities. OpenStack is a cloud orchestration system that provides an open environment for deploying cloud solutions. By deploying OpenStack, customers gain choice of vendors in building their cloud infrastructure at lower cost points while leveraging the benefits of community-‐driven innovations. With OpenStack gaining mainstream adoption, customers are looking for production-‐grade OpenStack solutions to deploy clouds to rapidly develop and deploy applications. As communication between cloud-‐deployed applications increasingly becomes server-‐to-‐server (east-‐west traffic) as opposed to client-‐to-‐server (north-‐south traffic), the network infrastructure needs to scale horizontally to match east-‐west heavy communication patterns.
THE SOLUTION Mirantis and Big Switch Networks have partnered to accelerate production-‐grade deployments of OpenStack clouds leveraging SDN and commodity switch hardware. The joint solution involves Big Switch’s Big Cloud Fabric, Big Switch Neutron plug-‐in, the Mirantis OpenStack and the Mirantis Fuel Installer. Customers can rapidly stand up OpenStack clouds that are scalable, resilient, operationally simple, and highly cost optimized. The Mirantis Fuel installer provides a simplified interface, which dramatically accelerates deployment of OpenStack while giving customers the flexibility to tailor OpenStack to their needs. Big Switch’s Big Cloud Fabric Controller programmatically interacts with OpenStack Neutron orchestrator to provision logical networks on a very low-‐cost leaf-‐spine fabric. The solution offers tremendous operational advantages over traditional box-‐by-‐box approaches with zero-‐touch and rapid fabric-‐wide installation and bring-‐up. In addition rapid change management is achieved with a centrally orchestrated mechanism to upgrade the entire fabric with minimum downtime.

THE SOLUTION COMPONENTS Mirantis OpenStack and Fuel Installer Mirantis OpenStack is a pure-‐play OpenStack distribution in the market that supports validated solutions across multiple vendors. Mirantis Fuel Installer for OpenStack is an open source tool for deployment and management of OpenStack. It provides an intuitive, GUI-‐driven experience for deployment and management of OpenStack. Fuel brings consumer-‐grade simplicity to streamline and accelerate the otherwise time-‐consuming, often complex, and error-‐prone process of deploying, testing and maintaining various configuration flavors of OpenStack at scale. Mirantis OpenStack builds in continuous verification across the thousands of dependencies and configuration settings across multiple versions of OpenStack complements such as OSs, hypervisors, networks, to DBs and tested under a broad range of real-‐world use cases. The Big Cloud Fabric The BCF embraces following hyperscale design principles to enable rapid innovation, operational simplicity with TCO reduction. • Open Networking (bare metal) Switch Hardware: The BCF
software is implemented on multi-‐vendor open networking hardware, thus disaggregating hardware from software to provide tremendous flexibility, vendor choice and significant cost advantage.
• Hierarchical Control Plane: The BCF control plane consists of an externalized SDN controller with few key functions off-‐loaded to switch OS for scale and resiliency. This “hierarchical” implementation of the control plane drives a new level of agility, which cannot be achieved with legacy box-‐by-‐box networking.
• Core-‐and-‐Pod Design: BCF is deployed on a per pod basis, which enables seamless insertion within an existing data center. Multiple pods connect to an existing core router. This modular architecture tremendously simplifies automation, capacity planning, and enables rapid deployment of new technologies.
Customers are deploying BCF pods for multiple use cases, including private cloud, Big Data analytics and virtual desktop infra (VDI).

switching hardware. When deployed with Mirantis OpenStack, which supports the widest selection of OSes, hypervisors and storage, customers get true flexibility and choice of deployment. Thus the joint solution offers tremendous TCO benefits to customers through CapEx reduction with commodity hardware, vendor choice and OpEx reduction through operational simplification.
• Workload Automation and Orchestration: The joint solution enables networks to be configured and orchestrated by the OpenStack users via the OpenStack Horizon GUI or 3rd party self-‐service portal. With the integrated Big Switch ML2 driver, networks provisioned by the tenants are dynamically provisioned on the BCF as the Neutron service invokes the REST APIs of the BCF controller to automate the configuration.
• Simplified Troubleshooting and Visibility: Big Switch has extended the “Test Path” fabric capability to the OpenStack Horizon GUI to enable OpenStack admins to gain both physical and logical path visibility between any two endpoints inside the BCF, thus greatly simplifying troubleshooting by offering unique visibility.
• Massive Operational Simplification and Scale: The joint production-‐ready solution provides tremendous operational benefits to customers as they deploy a hardened and well-‐supported Mirantis OpenStack in conjunction with BCF. Unlike complexities brought by box-‐by-‐box network designs, SDN-‐based architecture of BCF brings fabric-‐wide operational simplification through zero touch and rapid fabric-‐wide installation, bring-‐up and upgrade, centralized configuration of tenants. The operational simplicity of BCF along with absence of complex networking protocols within the fabric enables solution deployment at scale.
ABOUT MIRANTIS Mirantis is the #1 pure play OpenStack Company, which delivers the technology, integration, training, and support required for production-‐grade clouds. More customers rely on Mirantis than any other company to scale out OpenStack without vendor lock-‐in.

HOW THE SOLUTION WORKS The joint solution supports both OpenStack deployment options -‐ Nova Networking and Neutron. With Nova Networking, L2 networks based on VLANs can be pre-‐provisioned in BCF and the OpenStack tenants can use OpenStack’s VLAN manager to allocate upto 4K VLANs from this pool to OpenStack projects or tenants. With Neutron, network provisioning is dynamic by leveraging the Modular Layer 2 (ML2) integration model, where users select a vendor-‐specific driver mechanism to automate the configuration of their infrastructure. For BCF, this is achieved by the BSN driver, which is integrated with ML2 during the Fuel installation process. As networks are configured by OpenStack tenants, the Neutron service invokes the BCF controller through the REST APIs to dynamically provision them on BCF. When using OpenStack Neutron, users can scale up to 4K OpenStack projects by leveraging BCF’s logical segmentation model. Big Switch has also brought in two key extensions to the Horizon GUI: “Test Path” troubleshooting capability, which provides physical and logical visibility between two endpoints in the fabric, and Heat Orchestration templates for rapid provisioning application VMs via pre-‐validated configuration. The solution is supported for virtual workloads hosted both on KVM and ESXi hypervisors.
KEY SOLUTION BENEFITS Enterprise customers who use the joint Mirantis-‐BCF solution for their OpenStack deployments can realize the following key benefits:
• Ease of Installation and Configuration: The integration of BCF with Mirantis Fuel installer enables a very straightforward installation of the Big Switch ML2 driver in an OpenStack Neutron deployment. In addition, Big Switch Horizon GUI extensions of Heat orchestration network templates enable rapid provisioning of pre-‐validated configuration, allowing customers to achieve automation and save valuable time on approval processes because of prior validation of configuration.
• Flexibility of Deployment and lower TCO: BCF has a software-‐centric design that enables it to be deployed on open networking
