Sponsorship Proposal

Mirabel Education ProgramReport to The Pharmacy Guild of Australia

Program summaryThank you to The Pharmacy Guild of Australia for your support of the Mirabel Education Program. Your support has made it possible for Mirabel to continue our mission and, despite rising referrals, never turn a child away who is in need. Substance abuse continues to have negative consequences for the most vulnerable in our community and children remain the most frequently forgotten victims.

Targeted and early intervention with these unique families can mean the difference between family break down and children thriving. All children and young people need a safe and nurturing home environment, understanding, belonging, supportive networks and referral to appropriate services in order to overcome the challenges facing them. To achieve this, it is critical that grandparent and family carers are given the assistance and resources they require to maintain the wellbeing of the children in their care, which will ultimately result in the best possible outcomes for these families.

Educational support and tutoring has made a world of difference to the academic progress and confidence of the Mirabel young people. For example, fourteen year old Kylie can now read independently for the first time in her life, 16 year old James was chosen to represent his school at a leaders summit in Canberra, 13 year old Lily has been accepted into the high achievers class at her school, 10 year old Michael has caught up to the rest of his class in maths and 14 year old Nicholas no longer requires a teacher’s aid and is completing all of his year 8 tasks independently.

Final Report: October 2015 Amount Received: $6,353.50 October 2014

During the past year…

• 20 disadvantaged children received essential tutoring and educational support.

• 27 homework groups were facilitated for young people struggling at school.

• Jade is making steady progress with the help of her tutor. She hopes to be a teacher when she is older so she can help other kids experiencing difficult situations.

Pharmacy Guild of Victoria Educational GrantsReport to The Pharmacy Guild of Australia

Program summaryMirabel’s vision is that every child has a childhood filled with love, hope and belonging. With the help of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, our vision has become a reality for more than 3200 children who have been orphaned or abandoned due to their parents’ drug use. Your support has enabled Mirabel to provide tutoring and educational assistance to some of the most overlooked and disadvantaged children in Australian society.

Educational support and tutoring continues to make a positive difference to the the Mirabel young people, their teachers and their school communities. Eight year old Rachael is now enthusiastically attending school and prospects for her future have improved. After two years of tutoring, 15 year old Phillip is now at the expected level in all subject areas and has caught up to his peers. Eleven year old Keesha recently completed a cognitive assessment that led to a diagnosis of dyslexia. She now has the help she needs in class and at home to enable her to progress. With the help of weekly tutoring and educational support, 12 year old Daniel is now able to transition from his special education school back to a local mainstream school. This means that he is now able to attend school with his siblings and prepare for high school with the rest of his classmates.

Mirabel’s multifaceted and personal approach to service delivery has been at the core of its success over the past 17 years. This success was highlighted in a recent independent evaluation, which found that Mirabel’s support helps to keep kinship families together and that a significant 45% of all children experienced substantial life changing outcomes as a result of Mirabel’s intervention.

Final Report: November 2016 Amount Received: $21,000 February 2016

During the past year…

• 21 disadvantaged children received essential tutoring and educational support.

• 16 year old Hayley said tutoring has improved her self esteem and confidence.

• Since commencing tutoring, 13 year old Nathan has shown growth in all subjects

• 8 year old Rachael’s school is now more understanding of the effects of trauma on learning & behaviour

Outcomes AchievedThe demand for this program continues to grow. Ongoing evaluation and feedback validates the work being undertaken and confirms that the intended outcomes are being met, including:

• Demonstrated improvement in academic achievements shown in young people’s school reports.

• Positive change in attitude and willingness to attempt challenging tasks reported by young people’s teachers.

• Ongoing engagement in education and increase in school attendance reported by young people’s kinship carers.

• Demonstrated ability of young people to set goals and express hope for the future observed and recorded by Mirabel’s education specialist.

• Reduction in disadvantage experienced by young people through the provision of essential tutoring, enabling them to catch up with their peers.

• The healthy development of young people who are given the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Feedback My aim is to complete year 10 and then begin a hairdressing apprenticeship. My tutor is helping me to achieve this. Ruby (14)

Phillip’s behavior and school work have improved greatly and I feel that this has been largely due to the successful and respectful relationship he has built with his tutor. Gary, grandfather and full time carer of Phillip (15)

I don’t get in trouble as much any more and my teacher is much nicer to me. Bethany (8)

Because of Mirabel I feel that I’ve been accepted for who I am. Nicholas (13)

Nan was really happy with my report this time. All our hard work is starting to pay off. Brent (16)

Without Mirabel’s educational support, we would not have known that Keesha has dyslexia. Tutoring has helped us to put the necessary supports in place to help her with her reading and we are now seeing some steady progress. I am so grateful that this was picked up before she starts high school next year. Rosemary, grandmother carer of Keesha (11)

Raising funds to support those in need

The Victorian Branch of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia invites you to support the Mirabel Foundation by sponsoring our 2017 gala dinner. Community pharmacists work hard, enjoy a respected position in society and play a vital role in primary care. Join the Guild to celebrate community pharmacy, enjoy a great night with friends old and new and help raise money to give back to the community. This is an opportunity for the pharmacy industry to unite together.

Mirabel is an Australian Children’s Charity established in Victoria in 1998 and extended into New South Wales in 2003. It is the only organisation in Australia specifically addressing the needs of children who have been orphaned or abandoned due to parental drug use. Mirabel supports children aged 0-17 years and works at restoring a child’s sense of self-worth, belonging and hope for the future in order for them to reach their full potential as young adults.

The night will be raising funds for an educational grant. The grant will assist families with the costs associated with providing children with an education; school uniforms, school text books, supplies, computers, school fees. A letter will be presented directly to families from the Pharmacy Guild and Mirabel, which includes a sponsor logo banner of those sponsors involved on the night.

The night promises to be a great networking opportunity. Key industry and political figures have been invited to attend along with pharmacists from across Victoria.

We are seeking your support to sponsor, both large and small, the Pharmacy Guild Charity Gala Dinner. Our main objective is to raise as much money as possible for the Mirabel Foundation. In addition we are seeking product donations for the auction and raffle draw on the night. In the following pages we have outlined the packages available.

This event is sure to be a sell-out, illustrating that the pharmacy industry is passionate about the community and making a difference in people’s lives.
