Dear Executive,

I write to request that the Executive extend the contract of Heather Mabry as Casework and Policy Officer,

from 9 October to 21st November 2017 inclusive. This would allow the Casework and Policy Department to

operate with full staffing up to the return of the permanent caseworker Lorna Pringle. Without an extension

we would be down a caseworker across any of the over 6 weeks during those months. Heather is a very

experienced, highly qualified caseworker. She has been through all appropriate selection processes (on a

number of occasions) and has the complete confidence of the Department.

Demand for casework services has significantly increased this semester compared to semester one. From the

week before semester started til now case numbers are almost double the equivalent period in semester 1. It is

not clear if that trend will continue to the same degree, but semester 2 will likely have significantly higher

overall demand than semester 1. Current casework demand has increased in areas of Misconduct, Academic

Dishonesty, Academic Appeals and Centrelink advice, along with the regular show cause/exclusion matters

that arise in this period. We also expect some increase in complex cases relating to complaints, and perhaps

sexual harassment.

Despite not being provided with additional University funding for projects we have continued the Tax Help

service we host, and I would like to develop one or more new projects this semester. One on-going project is

the implementation of the new casework data base system. There are also on-going commitments to regular

casework specific training, and debriefing provision. There is some increase in the level of support for SRC

officers with some increase in the numbers of University Committees we brief on and meetings we attend.

There is some current pressure on staffing, and the addition of this requested planned staff continuity will

allow us to manage the coming semester so we can most effectively support students seeking our help (and

maintain the well-being of employees).

I have discussed the costs involved in this request with the Administration Manager, and Chitra advises me

the total cost is a $13, 128.82 inclusive of Super and Annual Leave accrual. She can advise you on the overall

budget situation if you require that. Though this is a real investment from the SRC I ask you consider it is a

relatively small proportion of the organisation’s overall staff costs.
