Executive summary

Description of the deliverable objective and content

The main objective of the training activities is to promote Sustainable Biorefinery Sciences and Technologies through Training, Education, and Mobility. The specific objectives are : To instruct and train all the people involved with production and usage of biorefineries including

industrials, students or research people To organize staff training in order to transfer the necessary technological knowledge To spread specific knowledge form experts in EUROBIOREF to young scientists and exchange of

good practice among the high level partners involved in different domains. To provide personal and distance-learning training to extend Science & Technology understanding

of the Biorefinery concept, and in parallel, promote S&T cohesion within the European Research Area and so increase skills across Europe.

Training activities The organization of training will consist of the following activities: 1. Lectures and training needs 2. Creating lectures for Universities courses and training material for the various types of users. This material will be updated for each new product 3. Organizations of workshops and training schools 4. Implementing at the users site 5. Evaluation of the training The activities accomplished in each of the tasks are summarized below while the detailed technical content is presented in Annexes I and II.

Training course plan and seminars A list of training events/seminars/courses scheduled to take place during the course of EuroBioRef has been already being drafted and included in the respective deliverable of the first year. During the third year two major events/courses have been accomplished

Training events completed In the second half of the third year one short course and one workshop were organized.

1. Short Course on Reactive Molecular Separations This three days event, on this specific topic, was organized by Technical University of Dortmund (TUDO) from 13 to 15 November 2012 at the premises of TUDO University. Reactive separation processes combine the reaction and separation steps in one unit operation and thus help to simplify complex production processes as those employed in biorefineries. This course aimed to convey current state of the art in the area of reactive separation processes using modelling tools. Five applicants participated to this course from three eurobioref partners (2 from CIRCC, 2 from PDC and 1 from University of Porto). The programme included in total 18h lectures on the fundamentals of thermodynamics on reactive separation, principles of modelling in separations and applications on the design of reactive distillation columns, absorption columns with the use of ASPEN plus simulator. The Lectures were delivered by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andrzej Górak (TUDO) with support of Carlos Rugerio (TUDO). Detailed information on the program of the course and the participants are given in ANNEX I

2. Workshop on Biomass cultivation for the production of chemicals and fuels

On 10

th of December 2012 UWM together with CRES, SOABE & DTI organised a workshop “Biomass

cultivation for the production of chemicals and fuels”. The event was run in UWM’s units: Łężany Palace (lectures) and Didactic and Research Station in Łężany (demonstration). Forty eight (48) persons participated in the event (9 persons from Eurobioref project and 39 persons from outside) from various interest group: farmers, local businessmen, local policy makers, specialist from agricultural extension centres, scientists, students and PhD students.

Summary of the presentations and the conclusions/outcomes of the event Workshop consisted of theoretical and practical parts. In the first part eight lectures were given. In demonstration part, participants had opportunity to observe one stage harvest of biomass and willow chips loading on a lorries. Theoretical session was opened by Vice rector for of UWM prof. Jerzy Przyborowski and prof. Mariusz Stolarski, which presented EuroBioRef project. Next lecturer, Prof. Janusz Gołaszewski presented research connected with renewable energy run within UWM’s Centre for Renewable Energy Research. Further lecturers presented topics about crops production for biorefinery purposes in Southern Europe and in Africa (dr. Myrsini Christou (CRES), Mr. Charles Themistocle (SOABE)). Another topics on perennial lignocellulosic crops production for energy purposes were presented by prof. Stefan Szczukowski and prof. Józef Tworkowski (UWM). Dr. Michał Krzyżaniak presented movie produced within the project titled “Cultivation of crambe (Crambe abyssinica)” – movie in attachment. At the end of the session Mr. Mieczysław Sowul (IHAR Bartążek) presented new grass variety produced by his company for energy use (Photo 1-8). This was followed by a discussion, in which several persons participated (Photo 9, 10). After the theoretical session participants were taken to Didactic and Research Station in Łężany, were short rotation willow crops plantation is localized. Prof. Stolarski presented plantation of seven willow clones cultivated in EuroBioRef project. At the plantation participants took part in willow harvesting demonstration. The plants were harvested with Claas Jaguar combine harvester which simultaneously cut and chipped willow biomass (Photo 11-14). Afterwards willow chips were transported by tractors with trailers to storage site and reloaded to lorries, adjusted for biomass transport (Photo 15). The workshop participants observed also this part of demonstration (Photo 16). After transport, fresh willow chips (moisture content approx. 50%) were loaded on two lorries with capacity 20 tonnes each. Chips in quantity of 40 tonnes were directly delivered to Borregaard in Norway on 12

th of December 2012 for

further tests. Stage of harvesting and chips loading were documented in photos. After the end of demonstration All participants came back to the palace, were took part in final discussion and were invited for diner organized by UWM. During workshop coffee breaks, 5 posters about research experience with energy crops were presented. The posters were prepared by employees of Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production of UWM (Photo 17-21). The workshop was very useful for promotion of EuroBioRef project, lignocellulosic and oil crops production and harvesting. The participants stressed in the discussion that this type of biomass production is very important for further agro-energy development and for whole bioenergy sector development including biorefineries. The agenda of the event and some photos are presented in ANNEX II

Assessment of the training sessions, (ALMA) The assessment of the training during the short course on Reactive Molecular separations is in progress and data are not yet available to be included in this deliverable. Basically, participants will be asked how satisfied they were with:

The content of the main presentations: Participants found that the presentations were mainly instructive, stimulating and well addressing the topic.

The performance of the speakers: Respondents almost unanimously rated as “excellent” the performance of the speakers in terms of expertise, clarity, and accuracy of speech and of slides readability.

The overall logistics: The vast majority of participants found that the event was well organised, with a good price/quality ratio, excellent punctuality and a substantial information package.

Deviation from objectives and corrective actions

There are no negative deviations from the planned work and the tasks are running ahead of schedule.

Impact of the results

It is expected that by the completion of the training plans/courses/workshops and other events that are

foreseen to take place in the frame of EuroBioRef, the objectives of the workpackage will have been

achieved. The training activities will promote Sustainable Biorefinery Sciences and technologies

through training, education, and mobility. Academia and industry inside and outside the project will be

trained and educated on cutting edge technologies on aspects of biorefinery chains investigated within

the project. The training events will also serve as dissemination activity for the EuroBioRef activities.

Publishable information

All the activities within this WP can be published on the website or presented in relevant events.

Conclusion

WP10.3 proceeds smoothly ahead schedule. Training events have already been accomplished and

several have been planned. Based on the above, the progress of this WP is very satisfactory.

Objectives (1/2 page) Reactive separation processes combine the reaction and separation steps in one unit operation and thus help to simplify complex production processes. In this way, investment and operation costs can be substantially reduced. In particular, because of versatile couplings and restricted operating windows in such processes, it is necessary to develop appropriate modelling approaches. This course aims to convey current state of the art in the area of reactive separation processes. First, the students will be confronted with theoretical fundamentals. Based on this, the development of various modelling approaches will be presented. Last but not least, selected reactive separation processes will be treated in view of their modelling aspects in the practical applications. In the frame of a computer exercise, modelling a simulation of reactive separation processes will be treated based on some typical practical examples.

Targeted participants Graduate master and PhD students working in the project and associated in a group defined by the Consortium.
