About laser cutting & engravingLaser cutting is a technology that uses a laser to cut

materials, and is typically used for industrial

manufacturing applications, but is also starting to be

used by schools, small businesses, and hobbyists.

In 1965, the first production laser cutting machine was

used to drill holes in diamond dies. In the early 1970s,

this technology was put into production to cut titanium

for aerospace applications. At the same time CO2 lasers

were adapted to cut non-metals, such as textiles.

At FabCafe, we use Universal Laser Systems’ VLS 4.60, a

60 watt CO2 laser cutter.

Laser files should be in vector format, preferably .dxf / .dwg. We can

accept Illustrator files but sometimes when importing them sizing and

dimension issues occur during translation. The maxiumum cutting

area is 590mm x 440mm. We do charge for any major adjustments to

files.

Choose your material

We have MDF and Clear Acrylic in-stock at all times. Other materials

which can be special ordered at extra costs are: Plywood, colored

acrylics, and laser-safe rubber.

About 3D printing and modeling3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), refers to processes used to synthesize a three dimensional object from a digital file. Objects can be of almost any shape or geometry and are produced using digital model data from a 3D model.

In 1981, Hideo Kodama published his account of a rapid prototyping system using photopolymers. Then in 1984, Charles Hull broke new ground by inventing stereolithography, which lets designers create 3D models using digital data.

At FabCafe we have both FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) and SLA (Stereolithography) printers to use.

So you want to 3D print somthing?!Design your files3D files should be in .STL format, which all major 3D modeling apps easily export to. The maxiumum build area is 145mm x 145mm x 175mm (Height) for the Form2 printer. We do charge for any major adjustments to files.

Choose your material / resinWe have various colors and types depending on whether you’re printing with resin or ABS plastics. Our stock varies so check ahead of time.
