MINUTES FOR THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE B.C. MINERALS LOGGING COMMITTEE February 4,1988 Attending: P.Killeen-GSC J.Mwenifumbo-GSC J. Klein-Cominco P.Kowalczyk-Placer Dome K.Witherly-BHP-Utah Preamble: The GSC's logging truck came out to B.C. last August and work was performed at the four planned sites; Highland Valley, Equity Silver (return visit), Westmin's Buttle Lake Mine and Abermin's Lara prospect. Unfortunately, problems were encountered at all four sites and only partial results were obtained at all but Highland Valley. However, even the Highland Valley work wa not trouble free. During the work a Geoinsturments tool was lost and subsequent to the field work, it was found out that there is some uncertainty in hole location information. The above problems aside, some very interesting results were obtained last August and these were displayed and discussed during the meeting. While there was some discussion regarding a third field season, the GSC feels quite strongly that a summary report on the last two years of work has high priority. Their feeling was that this report would be ready about this time next year. Discussions were to continue with regards to the possibility of more field work this coming summer. However, if done, this work would most likely performed at sites already visited; Equity Silver, Buttle Lake or the Sullivan area. Field Program Summary: Site #1- Highland Valley Several holes were logged in porphyry copper "ore" holes drilled during the early 1970's in the JX zone. During the course of this work, a Geoinsturments tool was unfortunately lost. While some quite interesting looking data was obtained, Jan Klein noted that the logs provided for the holes did not jive with overburden depths encountered in the holes, based on casing depths. Some mix-up in log IDs is believed possible and Jan says the mine staff are trying to sort things out. Site #2- Equity Silver While it was planned to survey a fence of four holes on a fence, only one was available as casing had mistakenly been pulled on two and the third had collapsed.

Preamble: The GSC's logging truck came out to B.C. last August and

work was performed at the four planned sites; Highland Valley, Equity Silver (return visit), Westmin's Buttle Lake Mine and Abermin's Lara prospect.

Site #3-Westminls Buttle Lake Mine Two surface holes were logged but no underground work was done. While results from the two holes logged was felt to be interesting, these two holes did not intersect any significant amounts of mineralization. Site #4- Abermin's Lara Prospect Two visits were made to the site (before and after Buttle Lk work) but very poor ground conditions made logging almost impossible. Only a temperature log was obtained in one hole. Discussion The discussion covered several topics which are outlined below: Work with existing data: Jonathan and Pat both felt strongly that some form of report should be prepared on the work done to date. This would include a description of the gear, field work and a preliminary discussion of the results. Jonathan stated that this endeavour would take priority in his mind over gathering more data. Logging-general: Pat Killeen expressed an interest in putting a practical guide together on the uses of logging, sighting examples from wide range of deposits and aimed at the general explorationist and not just geophysicists. Technology: The temperature gradient logs were thought to be very interesting, as they seem to be very sensitive to even small structures. When asked about caliper logs, Killeen indicated that the GSC was looking at a form of acoustic logging to image the borehole rugosity. The problems with entry into holes was discussed again, with the subject of plastic pipe again raised. Killeen suggested people consider drilling mud as an alternative although it was recognized that slimline tools might have problems if the cake was too thick. The GSC's conductivity tool is nearing completion. It has three frequencies; 1.25,2.5 and 5 KHz. Field tests against the EM-39 showed that the 3 9 was not too accurate at estimating resistivities above 100 ohm-m. The spectral density tool seems to be showing promise (sample of processed data from Equity enclosed).

Future Work: While it was recognized that there will always be more and interesting sites to obtain data for, the discussions seemed to focus in on looking at two topics; petrophysical measurements in-hole and logging for correlation purposes. As the petrophysical topic still seems to be too big to get a handle on, there was a strong interest in any future work emphasizing the use of logs to allow better correlations to be done between drill holes. Enclosures: Copies of all data obtained last summer are enclosed along with handouts from Pat and Jonathan's Open House presentation in early February. Attached as well are several other items which may be of interest to the Committee members. Respectively submitted Ken Witherly, Secretary
