Arts Tour Minnesota purpose

To support the artistic traditions and customs practiced within community and/or cultural groups by identifying, documenting, preserving, presenting, and honoring Minnesota’s folk and traditional arts.

Program outcomes

• The variety and number of folk and traditional arts activities in which Minnesotans can participate increases.

• The number of Minnesotans who participate in folk and traditional arts activities increases.

• The number of Minnesotans who teach or learn folk and traditional arts forms increases.

Grant amount

$5,000 - $75,000

Up to 75 percent of cash expenses from

Arts Board + Regional Arts Council(s)

25 percent of the cash expenses

must come from other sources.

Use of grant funds

• Fund apprenticeships, classes, workshops and community events• Present folk and traditional art forms featuring Minnesota folk and

traditional artists • Plan and evaluate folk and traditional arts events • Adequately compensate artists, folklorists, or cultural specialists• Conduct field research to identify and professionally document the

work of Minnesota folk and traditional artists • Bring in non-Minnesota experts in a folk and/or traditional art form

as long as Minnesota artists/arts organizations are also involved

Use of grant fundsNot allowed • Support of more than 75 percent of the project’s total cash expenses

• Scholarly research

• Parades or magic shows, or cash prizes related to competitions, contests, or talent showcases

• Reenactments or recreations of the past

• Presentation or performance of work by individuals who have not learned the traditional skills through a process taught by traditional artists

• Support salaries or overhead of public or private schools

• Support academic credit producing activities or events which are primarily oriented to post-secondary students and the academic community

• Activities that take place outside of the project period

• Any Minnesota folk or traditional artist • Minnesota nonprofit arts organizations• Minnesota nonprofit presenting organizations

and presenting affiliates • Minnesota community groups • Minnesota public agencies, and state, local,

and tribal governments

• Eligibility questionnaire should be completed first, and will indicate whether an applicant meets the basic program requirements.

$50,000 – $749,999 IRS form 990 or 990-EZ for fiscal year 2012 or certified audit if available

Less than $50,000 Board approved financial statements or the equivalent for fiscal year 2012

Organizations that did not exist or had no financial activity in fiscal year 2012. (These organizations may only request the minimum grant amount of $5,000.)

Board approved financial statements or the equivalent for the next available completed fiscal year.

If the organization is exempt from taxation under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code, attach a copy of the IRS 501(c)(3) letter of determination.
