Next Board Meeting February 13th

LaVonne’s home

Happy New Year and welcome to a new year of quilting with Minnesota Contemporary Quilters! I am honored to be president of the group this year and look forward to working with all of you to continue and enrich our work together.

At our last meeting we were still in need of a vice-president; I am happy to let you know that Tina Hughes has volunteered which completes a great board. We are always looking for inno-vations to increase the learning and fun that our group enjoys. If you have an idea, please share it with someone on the board or just share it with the group at a meeting. Perhaps it is something you did with another group or something you just wanted to try and think it would be fun to do with others.

Did you make any new year’s quilting resolutions? Try a new technique? Join a small group? Finish some old project? Attend and guild retreat? Participate in the Cycles challenge? Share some show and tell if you have never done so? Sometimes my resolutions get completed if I share it with someone. I purchased a Craftsy class some months ago, and it has not gotten to the top of my list. I resolve to complete it before any other projects. Hopefully, there will be some results to show at our next guild meeting. What better time to sew than in our sub-zero time of year!

MCQ SPRING RETREAT AT CAMP WAPO—NANCY CONDON

The Spring Retreat is scheduled at Camp Wapogasset just outside of Amery, Wisconsin, for March 28th through 31st. You can stay two nights for $135 or three nights for $150. The price includes lodging plus linens, meals and a big, beautiful workspace.

There will be lots of time to sew, sew, sew or read, sleep, talk and relax. Great way to get to know people. A voluntary mystery activity or two are planned. The registration form will be available at the January meeting and on the website by mid-January.

Below is Crossfire where the retreat attendees sleep and sew.

These MCQ members have pieces in the Textile Center’s member exhibit, A Common Thread 2014. This annual exhibit is a non-juried exhibit open to all artists who are Textile Center members. It hangs from January 16th—the opening is the evening of the Textile Center’s birthday bash—through February 26th. Come early to our meetings to see it.

TEXTILE CENTER LIBRARY NEWS

The Textile Library benefitted from MCQ’s regular library donation and the money from the auction of tote bags at our September meeting. Nancy Mambi coordinated MCQ member suggestions with the MCQ board and has ordered the following books and one magazine subscription. The books will be available for checkout after five p.m. before our January meeting according to these rules:

Only one new book may be checked out per quilter. People who check out a new book must agree to show it at show-and-tell that night so everyone can see it.

¡ Quilt Mania magazine, a two-year subscription ¡ The Beauty of Zentangle: Inspirational Examples from 137 Gifted Tangle Artists Worldwide by Suzanne McNeill, c2013 (Nov) ¡ Cutting Edge Art Quilts by Mary Kerr, c2013 (Apr) ¡ Mark Making: Fresh Inspiration for Quilt and Fiber Artists by Helen Parrott, c2013 (Aug) ¡ Intuitive Color & Design: Adventures in Art Quilting by Jean Wells, c2009 (Aug) ¡ From Print to Stitch: Tips and Techniques for Hand–Printing and Stitching on Fabric by Janet Edmonds, c2011 (Feb) ¡ Stitched Textiles: Landscapes by Kathleen Matthews, c2013 (June) ¡ Joy of Zentangle: Drawing Your Way to Increased Creativity, Focus, and Well Being by Suzanne McNeill, c2012 (Nov) ¡ Stitched Textiles: Flowers by Bobby Britnell, c2013 (June) ¡ Art Quilt Maps: Capture a Sense of Place with Fiber Collage, a Visual Guide by Valarie Goodwin, c2013 (Sept) ¡ Kaffe Fassett Quilts: Shots & Stripes: 24 New Projects Made with Shot Cottons and Striped Fabrics by Kaffe Fassett, c2013 (Feb) ¡ Stitch and Structure: Design and Technique in Two-and Three-Dimensional Textiles by Jean Draper, c2014 (Feb) ¡ Fabric to Dye for: Create 72 Hand-dyed Colors for Your Stash by Frieda Anderson, c2010 (Feb)

Visit the library for good fiber reading, technique instruction, project ideas, and artistic inspiration. The library is a Textile Center and MCQ member benefit. Books are checked out for 35 days, but it’s a kindness to return them sooner so more people have the opportunity to check them out.

Are you acquainted with a great fiber book that is not in the library? Suggestions for future acquisitions are welcome. Do you want to share your new favorite book with members? Write a short review and send it to the MCQ newsletter editor.

A final library note: The current issue of Threads magazine (March 2014) has an article featuring Twin Cities fiber venues, including the Textile Center and Treadle Yard Goods. Are your other favorite places mentioned?

2014 MCQ CHALLENGE: CYCLES—SALLY MORTENSON & BARB BONIFAS The 2014 MCQ challenge is Cycles. Have you settled on a design and begun sewing? The spring retreat could be the perfect location to finish it—uninterrupted sewing time, plentiful advice from quilters, and an inspiring setting. There is plenty of time left to make an entry. Here is a recap of the guidelines and deadlines. Happy quilting!

What does the word “Cycles” bring to mind? The human cycle—birth, puberty, adulthood, old age? Animal life cycle— egg, tadpole, frog? Menstrual cycle? Recycle, upcycle, spin cycle? Transportation—unicycle, bicycle, tricycle, motorcycle? Planet orbits? Election cycles? Seasonal cycles? Cycle these ideas through your mind and design a quilt for the 2014 MCQ Chal-lenge. The exhibit will debut at the 2014 Minnesota Quilters Conference in Saint Cloud and will travel to other locations. Quilts will cycle back to their owners in May, 2015.

Quilt Requirements:

1. Quilts may be no larger than 36” on each side.

2. Quilts must be rollable for storage and transporting between exhibits. Therefore, your quilt should not have embellishments or dimensional features that could be crushed or broken when the quilt is rolled or stacked with other quilts.

3. Quilts must have a label on the back—preferably in the lower right hand corner—with the quilt title and your name.

4. Quilts must have a 4” hanging sleeve and a flat hanging stick (wood lath which is available for about 29¢ per foot works well). Write your name on the stick. Instructions for hanging sleeves are available on our web site in the Exhibits, Events, Calls for En-try section.

5. Quilts must have an appropriately-sized cloth storage bag, such as a pillow case, labeled with your name.

Dates and Deadlines

Submission forms became available in November and will be due in April, 2014.

The Abode exhibit is currently hanging at White Bear United Universalist Church in Mahtomedi. Volunteers are needed to help take down the exhibit on February 16th. The exhibit will hang at Roseville City Hall next. Volunteers are needed to help hang on March 1st and take down on April 12th.

The hanging and take-down days for these two venues are on the weekend—a perfect time for volunteers who are employed during the week. Please consider participating in this work that allows us to exhibit our work throughout the area. Sally and Barb will have a volunteer sign-up sheet at the January meeting. Thank you to the volunteers!

The exhibit committee has secured a new venue for the Abode exhibit. In May and June the Abode quilts will hang at Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater.

If you know of other venues for our exhibit committee to investigate, please contact Sally Mortenson or Barb Bonifas.

Sally and Barb extend a big thank you to Nancy Birger who has been generous in providing space for storing the Abode quilts between our exhibit dates.

RENEWALS

It’s time for the quilters listed below to renew: January Debbie Boyles Sharon Castle Kathy Faust Janet Hartje Darla Keller Annearle Klein Peg LaSota Sally Mortenson Rosemary Root Vivien Smith Anne Tiller February renewals Rose Allen Nancy Condon Catherine DeMars Sharon Englund Lynne Heuton Mimi Holmes Anita Jain Joyce Kvaas Kristin Lawson Wendy Lazear Peg Lindberg JoAnn Maus Claire Caughey Most Maureen Ohland Willie Piccard Susan Stein Peggy Wright We currently have 109 members. Renewal details are on the back page. Don’t miss out on any of the 2014’s up-coming programs, re-treats or special events!

The sun is shining today, and we want to send a little extra of that warmth to our members who need a little lift or congratulations. I've got a few standby fiber art cards waiting to be sent to cheer a member on. They are really fun to make. Some of you have given me cards you've created and they were appreciated—by me and then by those who received them. See Joan’ s message below.

Remember the Schoolhouse meeting we had in Novem-ber? Wanda Shelton showed us how to make prayer flags. Wouldn't it be lovely to receive a stretch of the little flags when life is on the difficult side? Make some of them for me to send! Simple or grand—either is fine. Five or seven on a ribbon or string would be about right for sending. Please sign your work.

Joan Carver, our Two-Bit Bag Lady and new board member on the Special Events committee sends her grateful thanks to all the MCQ members for their healing thoughts, well wishes, cards, visits, etc. while she is confined with a severely broken leg/ankle. The orthopedic surgeon says she can rise and walk, so she hopes to see everyone at the January meeting.

[Get well, Joan! We won’t say ‘Break a leg.’ - Ed.]

MCQ MEMBER PROFILE—KRISTIN LAWSON

My mom taught me to sew when I was very young, but it didn't really take. I dabbled in sewing over the years but didn't start quilting until 2006. I have yet to make an "art quilt," although I would like to soon! Everything inspires me. I wish I had so much more time to make everything that I want to. By far, designing and fig-uring it all out is the best part of the creative process! I got EQ7 last year and I love playing with design. I spend many, many hours playing with pattern and color.

We made a built-in desk in an alcove in my dining room where I sew. When it comes to quilting, I just move my machine over to the dining room table. I keep all my fabric in a back closet. I had a sewing room for a little while when I had only my daughter. I didn't like using it because it was too far from the rest of the family. I sew on a Brother NX650-Q that I got in 2008. I am thinking of adding a Juki or an-other really fast, straight stitch machine. I mostly sew during the day when my kids have managed to amuse themselves, although I am often interrupted to break up squabbles or when they get bored. Right now I stay at home with my two boys aged five and three. I also have a seven-year-old daughter, though she's in school all day.

I tend to like more geometric, symmetric designs. A Penrose tile quilt is on my bucket list. I use a lot of solids, but I do use prints sometimes. My most recent favorite fabrics are shot cottons and linen blends or lookalikes. For prints I like many of the more modern designer fabrics like Tula Pink, Lizzy House, Anna Maria Horner, etc., although I am not a huge fan of geometric prints. I mostly like clear bright and dark colors and not so much the pale and pastel ones.

In the summer of 2010 I wanted to help my grandma make a quilt top for my cousin. Grandma wanted to make quilts for all her grandchildren but wasn't able to sew much anymore. When I was back home visiting my parents in Calgary, she showed me what pattern she wanted and gave me a stack of fabric. I sewed a queen-sized quilt top with lots of triangles and stars in eight or nine days. I was also about seven months preg-nant at the time, and my parents' house doesn't have air conditioning. Grandma loved it, and I am so happy I was able to do that for her.

I entered a quilt into the "Large bed, pieced, machine quilted by entrant" category at the state fair last year and won a second place ribbon. I was pretty surprised as I wasn't really entering to win. I'm not sure I ever will sell any work. Although I am starting to accumulate a lot of quilts and I'll need to figure out what to do with them all before too much longer, I would be more likely to donate the extras, I think, rather then sell them.

I am on the board of the Minneapolis Modern Quilt Guild, and I am a member of MQ. I haven’t been published, but I'm working on it! I have been "retired" since 2004.

———————————————————————————————————————————————

From page 6:

In two-and-a-half years all my kids will be in school, and then I want to have more of a job, but I don't want to go back to working outside the house. I worked as a technical writer, so I thought that publishing my quilt patterns would be a good fit. It is hard getting stuff done when two of my kids aren't in school, but I'm making some pro-gress.

You can find my patterns on Craftsy or Etsy under the name alittlecrispy. I also have a blog that I occasionally update at alittle-crispy.blogspot.com. A few years ago I wrote an eBook on fold and dye paper—called "Orizomegami"—that I sell on Etsy. An Australi-an publisher printed it (though only in Australia). I am currently working on a longer eBook that shows a similar technique applied to fabric. I'm almost finished!

I think I have made up to 43 quilts. No wall art yet. One of the reasons I joined MCQ was to inspire me to make some less functional, more artistic pieces. I have a lot of trouble making something that isn't functional, even though I love looking at other people's work. I really enjoy dye-ing fabric, and I want to try painting it as well, so I feel like I will get to it soon. I’m glad I joined MCQ—all of the people I've met have been very friendly and inspiring!

TEXTILE CENTER NEWS—TINA HUGHES

The Textile Center is celebrating its 20th birthday in 2014, and MCQ has become a sponsor of it. The MCQ board voted to be a Gold level sponsor. This letter from Tim Fleming thanks us for our sponsorship:

"I would like to thank the Minnesota Contemporary Quilters for their donation of $500 to the 20th Birthday Bash. Your sponsorship enables the Textile Center to carry out its mission of honoring textile traditions and promoting excellence and innova-tion in fiber art. The guilds have truly been at the heart of Textile Center's successes over the years, and it is the guilds—and your members—who have helped to forge Textile Center in the fiber community hub that it is. Your support means a great deal to us, and we thank you for your help in making the Textile Center into what it is today, as well as for your support as we work together to shape the coming years. Thank you so much for your gift."

He also wrote, by hand, "It is awesome and inspiring to have your guild step up to the plate and be a sponsor. Thanks to you other guilds are following your lead."

There will be more details soon regarding how the sponsorships will be recognized and advertised.
