I would like to acknowledge and thank the former treasurer Cath Grose-Jones for her hard work and dedication to the MPS P&C. It was wonderful to have Mrs Wilbraham attend this meeting and continue the strong relationship between the school and the parents of Minnamurra Public School. These reports indicate how students have settled into the school year, how motivated, resilient and engaged they have been in their learning. It also indicates to parents how students are engaging and playing with each other in the playground. These reports are intended to give a starting point to the discussions parents and teachers will be having a week later at the parent teacher interviews. Those interviews will be held on Tuesday 10 April from 3:00 - 6:30 PM. Busy End to the Term As always, it is a busy time at Minnamurra Public School. Damaged Hats Over the course of the beginning of the school year teachers and parents have noticed that student caps are being broken and damaged. Some students are drawing on their hats as well. I would like to remind all students that the school hat is part of the school uniform and must be looked after, just like any other part of the uniform. Changes to Facebook There will be some minor changes to the Minnamurra Teachers’ Facebook page. We will be taking a more active role in the Facebook page, tightening up security and using Facebook to advertise the amazing things we do at MPS. The main change is there will no longer be a PS Connect group. This will save confusion about where to go for information about what happens at our school. These changes will be advertised in the school newsletter over the next few weeks.

Student Absences Thank you to parents for your diligence in promptly submitting notes for your child’s absences. The ladies in the office really appreciate this as it alleviates letters requesting an explanation being sent home. Rob Haigh Relieving Principal

National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence

Friday 16 March is the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. Due to our Dance2bFit Program on Fridays MPS is highlighting and taking part in this special day on Thursday 15 March. Our Stage 3 students

will be leading lessons in all of the K-4 classrooms, from 1:00 pm - 1:35 pm. Stage 3 students are participating in training and workshops this week to prepare them for their teaching role. These students will be revising our ‘High 5’ strategy and talking to the students about bullying, types of bullying and what they can do if they are being bullied. Thank you Stage 3 for your effort in working towards

spreading the ‘BULLYING. NO WAY!’ message. Ms Hotham Stage 3 Assistant Principal

World’s Greatest Shave

On Monday 12 March, Minnamurra Public School participated in The World's Greatest Shave. The students had a Crazy Hair Mufti Day, bringing gold coin donations to support the Leukemia Foundation. At 12:00 pm, 11 students and one teacher shaved their hair. Some of them felt a little bit nervous at the thought of shaving their hair, but all of the students were smiling by the end of it.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR PARENTS AND CARERS

Replacement cost for a lost Bus Pass is $15. Contact Kiama Coaches to arrange a new one.

Kiama Coaches do not accept Opal Cards.

Two students were able to cut off long lengths of hair. These will be donated and woven into wigs for people who ‘didn't choose to lose their hair.’ We are so proud of our amazing students, who showed us how thoughtful and generous they are. The students who shaved their hair were: Mikayla S, Cody B, Jacob M, Bella F, Max O, Will M, Thomas S, Dexter H, Jahl W, Jacob H as well as Paige C and Indiya R who shaved part of their hair. Miss Carol Laverty, joined the students and shaved her hair. One of the students who shaved their hair, Dexter, is in remission from hepatoblastoma (liver cancer). Here's what some of the students said about shaving their hair: Jahl: It feels fresh. It feels cool when you touch it. Thomas: It felt cold after it was done, but it felt nice to get all of the hair off. Dexter has a communication switch. His friend recorded herself saying "I'm getting my hair shaved off". Dexter hit the button again and again and again, telling everyone. Paige: We had fun at the assembly, shaving our hair off. Bella: It was a last minute decision for me to cut all of my hair off. I did it for Mikayla. Mikayla: I had an amazing time and I don't regret it. Miss Laverty: I am so proud of all the students who joined in. The students and staff enjoyed supporting this great cause and there was such a positive atmosphere at Minnamurra Public School. Through the Crazy Hair Mufti Day and the sponsorship of the shavers, Minnamurra PS raised over $6,000 for The World's Greatest Shave and the Leukemia Foundation. Please find photos attached to this week’s newsletter and on our Minnamurra Teachers’ Facebook page. Information Sheet MPS Ethics Poster & Q&A

Kiama Community Garden Plant Sale

Calling all GrandparentsMany of our Minnamurra Primary School kids

want to learn Ethics, but there's no one to teach them. Each week about 150 students do

Non-Scripture.

It's just two hours per week. During school terms only.

Training & lesson plans provided.

Can you help?

Contact local mum, Fran Wood 0404 184 175 ~ [email protected]

Want to know more?

Teaching Ethics at Minnamurra Primary School

What's Ethics? Ethics can be taught to NSW public school students as an alternative to Scripture and Non-Scripture. It's a secular approach to problem solving using reason, values & principles. Ethics classes support students to make their own judgments about whether something is right or wrong, good or bad and to explain why using evidence & reason.

How many Ethics teachers do you need? We'd like to recruit 4-6 volunteers to teach students in years K-6.

What's involved? Ethics classes are generally about 30 minutes long and can have 8-22 students. They're held each week during terms 1-4 in school hours at the school. Primary Ethics will teach you everything you need to know about becoming an Ethics teacher & provide you with lesson plans. All you need to do is come along each week, deliver the lesson plans & enjoy helping our wonderful MPS students to learn.

Do I need to have teaching experience? No. You just need to be an Australian citizen who's computer literate, enjoys working with children & has a willingness to learn.

Do I need to be related to a student at the school? No. We welcome all members of the community to support our school.

What happens if I want to travel, have an appointment or get sick? It'd be great if you could schedule travel & appointments around your classes to provide consistency for the children. If this isn't possible or you get sick, just let MPS know as soon as you can. We'll ask another volunteer to take your class or have a teacher supervise the kids instead.

How can I apply to teach Ethics at MPS? You can apply online at www.primaryethics.com.au/volunteer/ethics-teacher
