This report provides an analysis of traffic accidents that occurred as at May, 2015. The traffic accident data quoted met fundamental guidelines for reporting and classifying traffic accidents as defined by the Road Safety Unit. The main criteria are; the crash has been reported to the police, the crash occurred on a road open to and used by the public, whether the road is public or private and the crash involved a vehicle, which, at the time of the accident was in motion. _________________________________________________________________________________________________

SUMMARY

Twenty-seven persons have been killed in twenty-six crashes for May, 2015.

Fatal crashes have increased by eighteen per cent (18%) and fatalities have increased by thirteen per cent (13%) respectively when

compared with similar period in 2014.

Fatalities have decreased by one per cent (1%) over the period January to May 2014.

Fatalities are projected to decrease by five per cent (5%) in 2014 when compared with 2013.

Pedestrian fatalities are projected to increase by four per cent (4%) in 2014 when compared with 2013.

Child fatalities are projected to decrease by twenty-five per cent (25%) in 2014 when compared with 2013.

Elderly fatalities are projected to decrease by seven per cent (7%) in 2014 when compared with 2013.

Private motor vehicle passenger fatalities are projected to decrease by ten per cent (10%) in 2014 when compared with 2013.

Pedal cyclist fatalities are projected to decrease by nineteen per cent (19%) in 2014 when compared with 2013.

Motorcyclist fatalities are projected to decrease by five per cent (5%) in 2013 when compared with 2012.

Pedestrian accounted for eleven per cent (11%) of the road users killed.

Pedestrian fatalities have decreased by twenty-five per cent (25%) when compared with similar period in 2014.

Passengers accounted for twenty-six per cent (26%) of the road users killed.

Passenger fatalities have increased by fourty per cent (40%) when compared with similar period in 2014.

Pedestrians, motorcyclists, private motor vehicle passengers and private motor vehicle drivers accounted for ninety-three per cent (93%) of

fatalities in May 2015.

Males and females accounted for seventy-eight per cent (78%) and twenty-two per cent (22%) respectively of the persons killed in traffic

crashes.

Male fatalities have decreased by nine per cent (9%) and female fatalities have increased by eighty-three percent per cent (83%) respectively

when compared with similar period in 2014.

Twenty-two per cent (22%) of the persons killed belonged to the 25-29 age group while four (4%) of the persons killed belonged to the 60

and over age group.

Nineteen per cent (19%) of fatalities occurred in Trelawny.

Fifteen per cent (15%) of the fatalities occurred in St. Catherine and St. Andrew respectively.

Three pedestrians died as a result of three fatal pedestrian crashes.

All pedestrians that died as a result of traffic crashes for the month of May, 2014 were male.

Thirty-three per cent (33%) of pedestrians killed belonged to age groups 45-49 and 50-54 respectively.

One child has died from traffic crash for May, 2015.

The only child that died was a PMC Passenger in Manchester.

One elderly person died from traffic crash for May, 2015.

Elderly fatalities have decreased by sixty-seven per cent (67%) when compared with similar period in 2014.

The only elder that die from traffic crash belong to age group 65-69.

Six private motor vehicle passengers have been killed for May, 2015.

Private motor vehicle passenger fatalities have significantly increased when compared with similar period in 2014.

Twenty-nine per cent (29%) of private motor vehicle passengers died on a Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Twenty-nine per cent (29%) of private motor vehicle passengers died in Manchester and Trelawny respectively.

Five private motor vehicle drivers died from traffic crashes for May, 2015.

The number of private motor vehicle drivers has remained constant when compared with similar period in 2014.

Sixty per cent (60%) of private motor vehicle drivers died on Saturday.

Ten motorcyclists have been killed for May, 2015.

Thirty per cent (30%) of motorcyclist deaths occurred on a Monday while twenty per cent (20%) occurred on Wednesday and Sunday

respectively.

All private motor vehicle drivers were male.

There have been one multiple fatal crash for May, 2014 which resulted in three fatalities.

Twenty per cent (20%) of private motor vehicle drivers occurred in St. Andrew and Trelawny respectively.

There were no multiple fatal crashes.
