Reg 297/13), under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, coming into force on July 1, 2014. The regulation requires basic occupational health and safety training for workers and supervisors, setting out content and record keeping requirements, and limited exemptions. This regulation was developed after consultation with stakeholders and is the first of its kind in North America. Mandatory awareness training fulfils two priority recommendations from the Expert Advisory Panel Report: 2 The MOL should require mandatory health and safety awareness training for all workers . (Recommendation 14) The MOL should require mandatory health and safety awareness training for all supervisors who are responsible for frontline workers. (Recommendation 15) Ministry of Labour Health & Safety at Work Prevention Starts Here The Awareness Training Program Suite The Ministry of Labour has developed a suite of training programs, available at no cost, to facilitate compliance with the regulation. All programs in the suite are compliant with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), and available in multiple formats and multiple languages (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese). The awareness training program suite offers employers choice - employers can use their own training as long as it satisfies the requirements in the regulation. The free training program suite can be downloaded from the MOL website . This material is also available in print at ServiceOntario. The free training program suite includes: The “Prevention Starts Here ” – mandatory poster; The “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps ” workbook and associated employer guide; The “Supervisor Health and Safety Awareness in 5 Steps ” workbook and associated employer guide; and eLearning modules for workers and supervisors. Occupational Health and Safety Awareness and Training Regulation

On November 15, 2013 the MOL announced the Occupational Health and Safety Awareness and Training (O. The Mandatory Poster – Prevention Starts Here

As of October 1, 2012, employers have had to post the mandatory “Prevention Starts Here Poster” in English and the majority language of the workplace.

The poster is available at no-cost for download on the MOL website at http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/hs/pubs/poster_prevention.php.• The poster is also available in print from ServiceOntario.

Awareness eLearning Modules§ Launched on November 15, 2013.

§ The modules convey basic occupational health and safety knowledge to a wide audience.

§ Each module takes approximately 45-60 minutes to complete.

§ Upon completion, a certificate can be printed/saved as a portable and transferable record of training.

§ The modules are AODA compliant and can be accessed using:

• Google Chrome 17+

• Safari 5.1+

• Internet Explorer 9+.

eLearning for Workers

§ The module is comprised of 4 steps, and includes sectional quizzes and other testing/knowledge transfer components.

§ The module conveys:

• Duties and rights of workers;

• Duties of employers and supervisors;

• Roles of joint health and safety committees/health and safety representatives;

• Roles of the MOL, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and designated entities;

• Common workplace hazards;

• Requirements set out in WHMIS; and

• Occupational illness and latency.

§ The module is comprised of 5 steps, and includes sectional quizzes and other testing/knowledge transfer components.

§ The module conveys:

• Duties and rights of workers;

• Duties of employers and supervisors;

• Where to find additional sources of health and safety information.
