Name of Local Ministry Unit:  Union United Church

Address of Local Ministry Unit: 6008 Stone Church Road, Union, ON  NOL 2L0

Brief Description of Local Ministry (three sentences):   Our church is a rural church providing spiritual nourishment and pastoral care for those in Union and surrounding area.  We are a friendly church that is warm and welcoming, enjoying food and fellowship as we journey forth, growing in faith, celebrating God’s presence, and carrying the Good News into our community.11

Priority (#1 to #7)

Category Title

This is who we are as a Local Ministry Unit:

1 Worship (worship continued on next page)

Music is a big part of our worship service, and the congregation enjoys a mix of old and new music. Our dedicated Choir/Music Director chooses the hymns in consultation with our minister. Sunday School is always available, although there are no children attending at present. Each worship service includes time for the children and young at heart, with a format that allows for interaction. The congregation is very open to various modes of delivering the message – drama, monologues, music services, history of hymns, etc. We generally follow the lectionary, and appreciate sermons that relate the scriptures to everyday life. Lay leaders are involved in worship with the sharing of announcements and the Mission for Mission. Our worship experience on Christmas Eve and during Holy Week are important to us, and services are well attended. The Sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated five times a year. Our prayers and liturgies allow for congregational participation. We utilize Power Point, and have access to the internet at the church. We are blessed to have two (volunteer) Bulletin Secretaries; one who formats and prints the actual bulletin, and another who is responsible for the PowerPoint slides related to the worship service. The church bulletin is e-mailed out every Sunday to members, adherents, and shut-ins. A newsletter and special letters keeps the church family and community

apprised of all the happenings at the church. 2 Pastoral

Care With an aging population, there is a great need for pastoral care. At present, this is carried out mainly by our minister. Members of the congregation are very good about letting the minister know about people/situations where pastoral care is needed. We are conscientious about our Card Program which helps us connect with those who are ill, bereaved, celebrating a birthday, anniversary, etc. Many of our members enjoy fellowship at a local restaurant after Sunday worship. Our minister is on the rotation for local nursing home services, and conducts funerals for members of our community. The minister is expected to be visible in the community.

Justice and Outreach

The Minute for Mission is read every Sunday. Our members are strong supporters of this fund, and we always exceed our annual commitment. We have a dedicated M&S Enthusiast. We support several local agencies, including the food bank, YWCA, and Women’s Shelters (St. Thomas), Grace Café (by providing food items, and volunteers from the congregation who help to staff the Café), Christmas Care & the Christmas Shoppe, Fresh Start Maternity Supports, and Peace Williams Camp. We commit to a monthly outreach project. One of our outreach initiatives was the collection of items to aid a refugee family. On the last Monday of June, July & August, we host a “Cruise Night” featuring classic cars, food, and music. A Cookie Decorating Night, held in December, is open to all ages at no charge. Pancake suppers are held on Shrove Tuesday with all proceeds going to a designated outreach project. The local 4-H group meets here. Our Presbytery and Conference representatives keep us apprised of outreach projects and appeals. We do not have a specific goal related to Justice.

4 Leadership Leadership is currently provided by a core group of people who wear many hats. We welcome encouragement of our lay leaders, and appreciate a minister who has the ability to recognize people’s various gifts and empower them to use those gifts.

5 Stewardship We consider ourselves a welcoming congregation, and enjoy our beautiful church building and property. Our property and facilities are very well maintained. We have a chair lift, and our building is wheelchair accessible to the main level which includes a fully accessible washroom.

6 Discipleship We live out our faith through action, as noted in the various ways we reach out to our community (see #3 – Justice and Outreach). Baptism, Confirmation, and Communion provide enrichment for the many needs of our members. To sum up our way of being “We are going forth, growing in faith, celebrating God’s presence, and carrying the good news into the community.”

7 Ministry Partnerships

Our minister takes an active role in Elgin Presbytery & London Conference, and has collegial relationships with other ministers. At present, there is no Ministerial group in our area, although an Easter Sunrise service is held in collaboration of the Quaker and Baptist faith communities.

Position Summary: (2‐4 sentences that summarize the position)

Autonomy in Decision‐Making: What decisions will Ministry Personnel make independently (without

consulting others) and what types of decisions will require consultation, and with whom. This list does not

need to be exhaustive but should indicate what types and amounts of expenditures can be authorized by

the Ministry Personnel, as well as the relationships among other paid staff, e.g. Who has decision‐making

role in music?

Principal Areas of Responsibility and Associated Duties:

General Instructions:

1. Use the Ministry and Mission Profile to guide how you complete these categories, which can be ordered by priorities and the amount of time, energy and skill required to fulfill them. (In the Handbook they are ordered alphabetically; which is fine too!)

2. For each ‘principal area’ define the duties that are associated with the area. As much as possible, indicate the frequency of the duties (e.g. daily, weekly, monthly, occasionally or yearly if applicable). BE HONEST. Don’t say something is ‘as needed’ when you really mean ‘daily.’

3. Start by being specific and including EVERYTHING. Then go back and delete the things that don’t really belong. The position description, in most cases, will be between 3‐5 pages.

4. Involvement in Presbytery and Conference is not optional but rather a key component of each Ministry Personnel’s vocation. A Local Ministry Unit cannot choose to eliminate this as an expectation.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

This section identifies the absolute requirements of the position (not the ‘nice to have but not essential’).

Include: expected level of education; certifications required; driver’s license and access to car (if required);

areas of specialization, if any; computer and technological expertise (if required); etc.

Other ‘Preferred’ Assets:

This is where you can indicate skills, credentials or abilities that aren’t required but that are ‘preferred.’

These may be areas that you help the Ministry Personnel to develop over time, e.g. if this ministry position

includes maintenance of a website, then website maintenance may be a ‘preferred’ skill, or if it involves

working in a shelter or other type of outreach ministry, perhaps a preferred skill is ‘experience in scheduling

volunteers.’ On the other hand, you may have no ‘preferred’ assets or skills for the Ministry Personnel.

That’s OK, too.
