Family Activity for Lent Making Prayer Pretzels

Making pretzels in Lent as a reminder to pray is a tradition dating back to the early 600s.The rolled bread dough shaped into the form of crossed arms over the heart brought to mind a popular Christian prayer gesture. The legend claims that the pretzel was originated by monks. They formed dough into pretzels to look like arms folded in prayer. Then they gave the pretzels to children as a reward for learn-ing their prayers. Your children will enjoy making these pretzels ~ Be-fore you eat the pretzels, say a prayer together~ Enjoy the pretzels and let them remind you that Lent is a time for prayer ~ Sandi ~ Prayer Pretzels 1 1/4 cups warm water 1 tablespoon dry yeast 1/2 teaspoon sugar 4 1/2cups flour 1 egg yolk 1 to 2 teaspoons water Coarse salt Let yeast and sugar dissolve in water for an hour. Add flour to yeast mixture and mix until smooth. Knead mixture for ten minutes. Place in a greased bowl, cover until the dough rises & doubles in size. Divide the dough into equal pieces. Roll each piece in your hands to make pencil shapes ~ 12 inches long. Shape each piece of dough into pretzels. Place on a greased cookie sheet. Brush with egg yolk and water mixture. Sprinkle with salt. Bake at 325˚ until golden brown.

R.C. I. A. On the first Sunday of Lent at the 9:00 am Mass, four catechumens and one candidate were elected to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. This “Rite of Election” begins a period of fi-nal and more intense preparation for the sacra-ments. Participants are no longer referred to as Catechu-mens. Now they are the “Elect” This step is called election because the acceptance made by the Church is founded on the election by God. A new period of Inquiry is being formed for those who wish to inquire more about the Catholic faith. This period is the first step for those who will pre-pare for the Sacraments of Initiation next year at Easter. Since the process for coming into the Church takes place over a period of time, now is the time to take that first step in the process. For more information about the RCIA process, call 351-5244, ext. 283.
