New Gold’s New Afton Mine would like to thank its employees, the community of Kamloops and our First Nations partners for the support we received during 2015. The mine completed its third year of commercial production and completed a mill expansion to increase the original 11,000 tonnes per day design capacity to 14,000 tonnes per day. Due to the mill expansion, New Afton saw increases to gold and copper production in 2015.
At New Afton we understand that responsible mining starts with keeping our people safe and healthy. A key success to our year in 2015 can be attributed to our employees doing the right thing and holding true to our values: Integrity, Commitment, Creativity, Employee Development and Teamwork. During 2015 we were awarded the Annual Mine Safety Award for Large Underground Mines and the John T. Ryan Award for having the lowest lost-time accident frequency rate and the lowest accident frequency rate.
In 2015, New Afton sponsored/or donated over $170,000 directly to local Kamloops’ charities and events. We are proud to support local initiatives.
Thank you to everyone in the community who has helped to make New Afton a success.
New Afton welcomes your feedback. Call us at 250.377.2100 or email us at [email protected] us on Twitter @NewAfton

Tomorrow is Mining DayM
ay 8 to May 14 is B.C. Mining Week. According to Venture Kamloops, mining is
a $6-billion industry in B.C. and has been a regional economic strength in Kamloops for decades.
Mining is one of B.C.’s largest and oldest industries and B.C. Mining Week is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the importance of the modern industry to British Columbians.
First celebrated 25 years ago in Vancouver, Mining Week has spread to the many communities that want to recognize the contributions of the mining sector.
The B.C. Mining Week committee is chaired by the
Mining Association of B.C. and composed of volunteers from a variety of companies, associations and institutions associated with the province’s mining sector.
In the Tournament Capital, celebration of the industry culminates with Mining Day in Kamloops on Saturday, May 7, at the Big Little Science Centre, 655 Holt Street from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The free annual event is an opportunity for the community to learn more about the mining industry through interactive displays and from the companies and community groups that support the industry.
The BIG LIttle Science Centre hands-on room will also be open. Core samples displayed at the annual KEG conference. Dave Eagles/KTW

INTRODUCING THE NEW INTERNATIONAL® HX™ SERIES. You need more than a truck that’s capable of doing its job. You need it to over perform, week after week, year after year. That’s why we designed the HX Series with the strongest single rail in its class — a 3.5 million RBM rating — a best-in-class steering system and a 150,000 lb. front tow pin. So when the others are begging for a break, the HX Series steps up and asks for more.

The Kamloops Exploration Group (KEG) has had a
busy year. As a group of
exploration, mining and mining-related people, we thrive on getting the positive word out on the mining industry.
Our KEG Outreach program has grown over the years and is well known in the community.
Ask-A-Geologist at the Kamloops Museum, school
visits and the Junior Delegates program at the annual KEG Conference are just a few highlights of our Outreach program and all were well received by attendees.
The popular KEG-hosted lecture series just finished up its 14th year of interesting and informative talks; KEG has brought in speakers from across Canada to present talks that promote earth sciences, mining and mineral exploration.
This year, the talks ranged from the use of drones in the exploration of minerals to the ever-popular discussions on dinosaurs and fossils to a presentation by a group of Albert McGowan students on how their experiment was selected to go to space on a shuttle mission.
These talks will start up again in January 2017, so please visit our website closer to that date to see the schedule.
The 29th Annual KEG Conference was held on April 12 and April 13 at the Coast Kamloops Hotel and Conference Centre.
The event was well attended with over 420 delegates and as always, the public was welcome to walk through the trade show.
This year, the conference theme was ‘Mining Potential Unearthed’ and the overall feeling was positive.
Every year, the KEG is honoured to award scholarships
to deserving students: the David Miller Scholarship (Thompson Rivers University), Ken Daughtry Geoscience Award (UBC Okanagan) and Ronald C. Wells Geological Education Fund (which is open to all geoscience students across Canada).
We are proud to be able to contribute to the winners’ studies and would like to once again congratulate the recipients.
Mining Day is taking place
tomorrow (May 7) at the BIG Little Science Centre in Kamloops and we encourage people to attend.
Bring your rocks in for the Ask-A-Geo event and even learn to pan for gold with Yukon Dan!
The Kamloops Exploration Group will be just one of the booths involved and we look forward to it every year.

This year marks the 30th anniversary
of Teck’s Highland Valley Copper Operations (HVC) one of the world’s most productive open pit copper mines. Teck Resources Limited is Canada’s largest diversified resource company.
With over 1,300 employees, HVC Operations is proud to be a strong contributor to the local economy, working
collaboratively with local stakeholders.
Employees reside primarily in Kamloops, Logan Lake, Merritt, Lower Nicola, Ashcroft and Cache Creek.
HVC has extensive safeguards in place to minimize health and safety risks as the operation works to achieve their vision of everyone going home safe and healthy every day. Ore is currently mined from the Valley, Lornex and Highmont pits.
A crusher relocation in the Valley pit was completed in 2015, providing access to
over 30-million tonnes of reserves as part of their current life of mine plan.
The Valley pit was the main feed source to the mill in 2015 and provides HVC with their highest grade material. Reserves and resources at HVC are projected to support mining at current planned production rates until 2026.
In 2015, additional drilling and engineering studies were conducted to define resources in the Bethlehem area, and to examine other options to optimize
and extend production past the current mine life. Further work is planned this year.
Teck and its operations, including HVC, have developed a comprehensive sustainability strategy that sets out long-term goals that stretch through to 2030 and short-term 2020 goals to guide sustainability efforts.
This commitment to sustainability is evident in many environmental and social initiatives at HVC. For example, the operations’ comprehensive Environmental
Management System has been certified to ISO 14000 Standard, a leading industry standard.
In the coming years, HVC plans to continue to enhance its reclamation activities and biodiversity management efforts.
An example of this work to date is a reclaimed tailings pond that is now a world-class fly fishing habitat, while HVC also partners with the Freshwater Fisheries on research and is sponsoring Learn to Fish programs for 2016 in the Interior.
In 2015, HVC supported various charitable organizations with financial and in-kind support including Community Partnership Initiatives in excess of $450,000, including employee-based campaigns to benefit Thompson Nicola Cariboo United Way, BC Children’s Hospital Foundation and Royal Inland Hospital Foundation.
With a focus on sustainable operation, HVC will continue to be a major part of the region’s social and economic fabric for years to come.

As the Ajax Project has
worked its way through the environmental-assessment process, one thing has emerged strong — the proposed copper-and-gold mine has strong support from more than just
those who want jobs.
A diverse cross-section of the community — including retirees, doctors, students, tradespeople, educators and business professionals — are anxious to see the work of building the $1.3-billion project get underway.
The display of support
can be seen in bumper stickers on cars and trucks, in posts on Facebook and other online media, as well as in letters from Kamloops business leaders sent to government.
Grassroots supporters sporting home-made buttons have come to pro-Ajax rallies and filled meeting rooms to show
government bureaucrats they care.
“My phone is always ringing,” said external-affairs manager Yves Lacasse.
“Even when the news is filled with complaints from the small vocal minority who are opposed to Ajax, people are calling me to tell me how much they want us to keep working at this,
to keep moving it forward.
“I hear from wives and grandmothers, young graduates
and, in particular, experienced workers who have to fly out of town every month. Some are
people I know, others are just folk who see the value that a project like Ajax brings to a

community. “It’s more than
jobs. People want stability – they need stability – for their families
and for the social fabric of this community.
Kamloops has a generation of workers who
right now can’t see a secure future. They want something better.”
The steady
growth of Support Ajax, a Facebook group that started in the mind of a Kamloops wife
and mother, is another example of how deeply people want to see the mine get started.
Those who subscribe to the page are passionate, engaged and determined to not let a small number of opponents dominate the public debate.
“It’s been amazing,” said Caroline King, the woman behind Support Ajax.
“At first there were just a few of us, a small group who were frustrated about the negative impact that a few
people who are clearly opposed to everything were starting to have.
“We have more than 6,800 people on our Facebook page now and it keeps growing.
“Every post we write gets 50 comments or more from all kinds of people, and the message is always the same – let’s get this mine open!”
There is strong support for Ajax from across B.C. as well, as shown by comments filed in the recent 75-day public-comment period.
More than 65 per cent of
the comments filed to the BC Environmental Assessment Office were in support of Ajax, with many comments coming from people who live in places other than Kamloops.
Lacasse said the strong show of support also reflects the fact that many in Kamloops appreciate KGHM’s commitment to listening to community concerns.
“We care about health and the community and we will do this right,” he said.

New Gold is committed to contributing
to sustainable development and providing tangible benefits in every community in which we operate.
At New Afton, we continue to grow our relationships with the local community of Kamloops and our First Nations partners — Tk’emlups te Secwepemc and Skeetchestn Indian Band — and
look to improve both our safety and environmental performance.
In 2015, the mine’s third full year of production, New Afton completed a mill expansion increase from the original 11,000 tonnes per day to a design capacity of 14,000 tonnes per day (tpd).
Due to the mill expansion, New Afton saw an increase in gold and copper production. It is expected New Afton will achieve similar/consistent production again in 2016.
At New Afton, we understand that responsible mining starts with keeping our people safe and healthy.
A key success to our year in 2015 can be attributed to our employees doing the right thing and holding true to our values: integrity, commitment, creativity, employee development and teamwork. During 2015, New Afton was awarded the Annual Mine Safety Award for Large Underground Mines for having more than 240,000 hours worked without a lost
time incident and the John T. Ryan Award and the lowest total reportable injury rate for B.C. and Yukon.
New Afton had a positive year in 2015, with many significant activities supporting environmental management and improved performance including: independent tailings review board, tree planting with local youth, Earth Rangers sponsorship and completion of a potential bat cave habitat.
During 2016, we
continue to look for ways to improve our environmental performance through hosting students from Skelep School of Excellence and Skeetchestn Indian Band to assist with reclamation efforts by planting various native species on the mine site and inviting the elders from the two bands to participate in a surface and underground tour to provide an update to the mine operation and seek input from the group.
New Afton is a proud member of
the local Kamloops community. We give priority to using local vendors, hiring locally, and sponsoring local events or programs that have a direct impact on the community of Kamloops. In 2015, approximately $47 million was provided to Kamloops businesses and suppliers in the local area.
New Afton sponsored and/or donated over $170,000 directly to local Kamloops’ charities and events in 2015.

Mineral exploration is down in B.C. and it’s
not getting any easier to raise money to find the next gold mine.
Those factors are evident in the decline in the number of geologists and prospectors attending the annual Kamloops Exploration Group conference.
“It’s been really tough,” Gavin Dirom, executive director of the Association for Mineral Exploration in B.C. (AME), told attendees at the Kamloops Coast Hotel & Conference Centre on April 12.
Exploration firms
spent $272 million in 2015.
That’s down $66 million from 2014 less than half of the $680 million spent in 2012.
Similarly, in 2011, production from B.C. mines reached $9 billion. It declined last year to $6.9 billion.
Inside the conference, Kieran Downes was pitching one of the grassroots exploration projects the industry wants to see.
Troymet Exploration Corp. is exploring a base metals and gold target near Cache Creek. It spent only $20,000 last year.
Downes said the
company does not yet have a 2016 budget for the Redhill project, but is
planning a geophysical survey to better identify future drilling
targets — an expensive prospect.

Downes said. “We’re being judicious with what we have.”
Dirom said the majority of spending on exploration is being done on brownfield sites — targets beside existing mines. Successful examples of brownfield locations include New Gold Inc.’s New Afton underground mine on the city’s western boundary.
Yet the industry was built by optimists and several representatives said there may be evidence a bottom has been reached.
Dirom produced a graph showing a current 50-day uptrend in the TSX-V, the exchange dominated by small B.C. mining companies. There are 100 active exploration
projects underway. Two projects in B.C.’s north
— Brucejack and Silvertip — have received environmental permits and plan to start construction by 2017.
Kamloops is home to workers from two of the province’s current seven operating metal mines, through Highland Valley Copper and the only underground mine at New Afton.
While the price of oil has rebounded sharply this month, it has not taken coal or copper, two of the most important commodities exported by B.C., along for the ride. Copper was trading at $2.22 per pound mid-week this week on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Cody Oullette wasn’t new to heavy machinery
when he signed up for the Heavy Metal Rocks program during his Grade 11 year.
But when the 17-year-old NorKam student headed out to the Tk’emlups gravel pit last year, he wasn’t expecting the sight that greeted his eyes.
“I wasn’t expecting the heavy iron, like what they had,” he said.
“I was expecting some little Bobcats and some mini excavators — not
really big rock trucks and that kind of thing. But when you show up to the pit and look over at all the machinery lined up and you get to jump on everything, it’s just so much more than what you think.
“Your mind doesn’t really scratch the surface of how much equipment is up there.”
For the eighth year, the Tk’emlups Indian Band gravel pit was turned over to the Kamloops-Thompson school district earlier last month for the annual project, in
which students in grades 11 and 12 spend three days at the pit getting hands-on experience as heavy-equipment operators in the construction industry.
This program,
sponsored by local industry leaders and WorkSafeBC, is designed to provide on-the-job equipment operating experience to high school students considering their career options
before returning to regular classroom life.
Oullette said his family often had equipment around when he was growing up, thanks to a family business in Alberta and a general
household interest in machinery.
“Over the years, there’s just been a lot of little excavators around the house and we’ve had little farm tractors and stuff,” he said.
“I didn’t come into it really green, but the program just made my experience and skill set way better. It got me where I am now.”
Oulette went on to win the program’s best overall student operator award for the year and credits the program with

helping him secure a job at Pav’s Contracting after he chose to graduate early.
“I really got hooked on it. I’ve been around equipment most of my life and the program really just said, yup, you want to be working around equipment,” he said.
During Heavy Metal Rocks, teens rotate through different stations, getting experience on more than a dozen pieces of equipment under the watchful eye of experienced operators who serve as mentors.
And it was this year that Oullette returned as a mentor.
He taught Grade 11 and 12 students from around School District 73 how to construct retaining walls — the kind of work he now does at his day job.
Oullette said he wanted to give back to a program that was able to help him learn the skills to get
hired, from tips for working with an excavator to how to behave safely when working around heavy machinery.
“The program definitely kickstarted my career here,” he said.
• More on the program: Before climbing into the
operator’s chair, students receive Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training and their Level 1 Occupation First Aid certificate. In addition, WorkSafeBC prevention officers guide students on a complete site-safety orientation and give them their own personal safety equipment.
More than 50 companies and sponsors, along with a large number of individuals volunteer hours, equipment, and supplies, combine to make the program the ongoing success it is — and their involvement results in no cost to the students.
