Brostie’s Bronkonite Mine (26-00123) produces a specialty material forthe mining industry. Bronkonite is clay used as a drilling lubricant.Bronkonite is found in surface rock strata unique to northern Nevada.Brostie’s mine is a quarry operation that employs five to six minersdepending on the mood of Mr. Brostie. Mr. Brostie’s mood is not verygood. He has just heard about having to make changes to comply withPart 47 by September. It is likely that one of Brostie’s employees isgoing to be looking for a new job pretty soon.

Bronkonite bearing rock is blasted and crushed in the quarry beforebeing trucked to the feed stockpile. At the plant, the Bronkonite isseparated from the bearing rock with a process that uses water, kerosene, and sulfuric acid. The wastewater is neutralized with sodium hydroxidebefore being pumped to a settling pond. The separated Bronkonite isthen dried, assayed for purity and bagged for shipment.

The mine employees, in addition to the mine operator, Mr. Brostie, arethe quarry man, the plant operator, the shop mechanic, the janitor, andthe assay laboratory technician who also double as an office helper. Themine operates with one 10-hour shift per day five days per week.Usually, Friday is a maintenance day. Brostie’s mine has a hazardouschemicals list and the mine uses the labels that come with the productsthey buy. MSDSs, including the MSDS for Bronkonite are kept in a filein the office centrally located on the mine site.
