    INTRODUCTION

In the last few years the Open Source movement has changed the face of computingmore than almost anyone would have thought possible. Many people in the

computer industry believe that these changes are the most important changes incomputing since IBM contracted Microsoft to write an operating system for theirpersonal computers. This article is intended to discuss the history, philosophy, andlegal issues relating to Open Source.

    What is Open Source?

Open Source or open-source software is different from proprietary software. In OpenSource, the source code used in the software is available to anyone to examine,

evaluate, and adapt. Open source has had an important impact on the way manydevelopers view and create software. End users often use the term open-source tocover a variety offree and open source software.

The Open Source Initiative has this for a definition of open-source software:

Open source doesn't just mean access to the source code. The distribution terms ofopen-source software must comply with the following criteria:

    1. Free Redistribution

The license shall not restrict any party from selling or giving away the software as acomponent of an aggregate software distribution containing programs from severaldifferent sources. The license shall not require a royalty or other fee for such sale.

    2. Source Code

The program must include source code, and must allow distribution in source codeas well as compiled form. Where some form of a product is not distributed withsource code, there must be a well-publicized means of obtaining the source code forno more than a reasonable reproduction cost preferably, downloading via the

Internet without charge. The source code must be the preferred form in which aprogrammer would modify the program. Deliberately obfuscated source code is notallowed. Intermediate forms such as the output of a preprocessor or translator arenot allowed.

    3. Derived Works

The license must allow modifications and derived works, and must allow them to bedistributed under the same terms as the license of the original software.

    4. Integrity of The Author's Source Code

  • 7/29/2019 mini project report on open source (vlc)

    4/34

The license may restrict source-code from being distributed in modified form only ifthe license allows the distribution of "patch files" with the source code for thepurpose of modifying the program at build time. The license must explicitly permitdistribution of software built from modified source code. The license may requirederived works to carry a different name or version number from the originalsoftware.

    5. No Discrimination Against Persons or Groups

The license must not discriminate against any person or group of persons.

    6. No Discrimination Against Fields of Endeavor

The license must not restrict anyone from making use of the program in a specificfield of endeavor. For example, it may not restrict the program from being used in abusiness, or from being used for genetic research.

    7. Distribution of License

The rights attached to the program must apply to all to whom the program isredistributed without the need for execution of an additional license by those parties.

    8. License Must Not Be Specific to a Product

The rights attached to the program must not depend on the program's being part ofa particular software distribution. If the program is extracted from that distributionand used or distributed within the terms of the program's license, all parties towhom the program is redistributed should have the same rights as those that aregranted in conjunction with the original software distribution.

    9. License Must Not Restrict Other Software

The license must not place restrictions on other software that is distributed alongwith the licensed software. For example, the license must not insist that all otherprograms distributed on the same medium must be open-source software.

    10. License Must Be Technology-Neutral

  • 7/29/2019 mini project report on open source (vlc)

    5/34

No provision of the license may be predicated on any individual technology or styleof interface.

Figure 1: The Open Source Model: Source code is available to public. The public is free to

    make improvements.

    What is Free Software?

Free software is software that adheres to the concept of the four freedoms of

software, as articulated by the GNU Project. These four freedoms are as follows:

The user is free to use the software for any purpose.

The user is free to study the mechanisms by which the program operates andto adjust these mechanisms to a specific purpose.

The user is free to redistribute the software to another user.

The user is free to adapt and improve the program and release these

adaptations and improvements to the public.

Free Software shares much of its philosophy with Open-Source software, but manypeople within the open source community feel that there are important distinctionsbetween the terms, as described in the section Free Software vs. Open-sourcesoftware.

Often Free Software is referred to as "free as in speech, not as in beer", stressing theidea that the Free-software movement is concerned with freedom, not with price.Throughout this book the reader should assume that the word "free" is referring tofreedom.

Free Software vs. Open Source software

The primary distinction of open source software is that it's not about freedom, it'sabout what software does things better.

As a whole the movement is often called "Free and Open-Source software" (FOSS). Forthe purposes of clarity the abbreviation FOSS will be used when describing issuesthat apply to all open source software projects, whereas OSS will be used whendescribing issues that apply only to software with open-source licenses that allowfuture developers to close the source code, and FSS will be used when talking aboutissues that apply only to software with free licenses requiring future developersmaintain the previous style of licensing (if not the license itself).

FOSS does not mean no cost

This is a common misunderstanding about FOSS, in no small part because nearly allFOSS programs are available free of charge. For example when the text editor Emacswas first released Richard Stallman charged from time to time to get copies.Developers have the choice to charge under most FOSS licenses, although theyrarely choose to. The only requirement to be a truly FOSS project is that thepublisher provides the source code with the program, and to allow the user to editthat code.

On top of the initial cost of purchasing software, there are other ongoing costsassociated with all software. This can come in the form of support agreements, thecost of customization, training costs support personnel and other sources. This istrue of both traditional commercial software and FOSS programs. There is a largeand active debate about which type of software is more expensive over the long runfor large corporations, for individual users there is little to no question that FOSS ischeaper.

    What is source code?

The source code of any software is written in a programminglanguage, for example C, Pascal or web programming

languages like PHP. This code is written in textual form. Thesource code consists of instructions that define how aprogram behaves. The programmer can add or changeinstructions to adjust the programs behaviour and addfunctionality. (Weber,2004,p.4) Figureshowsanexampleofaverybasicpieceofsourcecodeanditsresult.

This code is written in the web language PHP. By pointing abrowsertothefileontheserver, theresultasshownontheleftis

    Misunderstandings (?) of ``OpenSource:-

The Open Source Definition is clear enough, and it is quite

clear that the typical non-free program does not qualify. So

you would think that ``Open Source company'' would mean

one whose products are free software (or close to it), right?

Alas, many companies are trying to give it a different

    meaning.

At the ``Open Source Developers Day'' meeting in August 1998,

several of the commercial developers invited said they intend

to make only a part of their work free software (or ``open

source''). The focus of their business is on developing

proprietary add-ons (software or manuals) to sell to the users

of this free software. They ask us to regard this as legitimate,

as part of our community, because some of the money is

    donated to free software development.

In effect, these companies seek to gain the favorable cachet of ``open

source'' for their proprietary software products--even though

those are not ``open source software''--because they have some

relationship to free software or because the same company

also maintains some free software. (One company founder

said quite explicitly that they would put, into the free package

they support, as little of their work as the community would

    stand for.)

    Some Open Source Softwares

Open-source softwareis software whose source code is published and madeavailable to the public, enabling anyone to copy, modify and redistribute the sourcecode without paying royalties or fees.[19]Open source code can evolve throughcommunity cooperation. These communities are composed of individualprogrammers as well as very large companies. Examples of open-source softwareproducts are:[20]

VLC media player is afreeandopen sourcemedia playerandmultimediaframeworkwritten theVideoLANproject.

VLC is aportablemultimedia player, encoder, and streamer supportingmany audio and videocodecsandfile formatsas well asDVDs,VCDs,and variousstreamingprotocols. It is able to streamovernetworksand to transcode multimedia files and save them intovarious formats. VLC used to stand for VideoLAN Client, but sinceVLC is no longer simply a client, thatinitialismno longerapplies.[2][3]

It is across-platformmedia player, with versions forMicrosoftWindows,MacOSX,GNU,Linux,BeOS,MorphOS,BSD,Solaris,Android,iOS,andeComStation.[4]

The default distribution of VLC includes a large number offreedecoding andencoding libraries, avoiding the need for finding/calibrating proprietary plugins.

Many of VLC'scodecsare provided by thelibavcodeclibrary fromtheFFmpegproject, but it uses mainly its ownmuxerand demuxers. It also gaineddistinction as the first player to support playback of encrypted DVDs on Linux byusing thelibdvdcssDVD decryption library.

    History

The VideoLan project was originally started as an academic project in 1996. It wasintended to consist of a client and server to stream videos across a campus network.VLC was the client for the VideoLAN project, with VLC standing for VideoLanClient. Originally developed by students at thecole Centrale Paris, it is nowdeveloped by contributors worldwide and is coordinated by theVideoLANnon-profit organization.

Rewritten from scratch in 1998, it was released under the GPL on 1 February 2001.The functionality of the server program, VideoLan Server (VLS), has mostly beensubsumed into VLC and has been deprecated.[5]The project name has been changedto VLC because there is no longer a client/server infrastructure.

After 13 years of development, version 1.0.0 of VLC media player was released onJuly 7, 2009.[9]

VLC is 3rd in the sourceforge.net overall download count.[10]VLC was available fortheiPad,iPhone, andiPod Touchfrom theApple AppStore, but was pulled due to alicensing conflict between the GPL and the iTunes Store agreement.[11]

    FEATURES

Because VLC is apacket-basedmedia player, it can play the video content of some

damaged, incomplete, or unfinished videos. (For example, files still downloadingviapeer-to-peer(P2P) networks). It also plays m2tMPEG transport streams(.TS)files while they are still being digitized from anHDVcamera via aFireWirecable, making it possible to monitor the video as it is being played. The player can also uselibcdio to access.isofiles so that users can play files on adisk image, even if theuser's operating system cannot work directly with .iso images.

VLC supports all audio and video formats and all file formats supportedbylibavcodecand libavformat. This means that VLC can play backH.264orMPEG-

4video as well as supportFLVorMXFfile formats "out of the box" using FFmpeg'slibraries. Alternatively, VLC has modules for codecs that are not based on FFmpeg'slibraries. VLC is one of thefree softwareandopen sourceDVD players thatignoresDVD region codingon RPC-1 firmware drives, making it a region-freeplayer. However, it does not do the same on RPC-2 firmware drives. VLC mediaplayer has some filters that can distort, rotate, split, deinterlace, mirror videos, createdisplay walls, or add a logo overlay. It can also output video asASCII art.

VLC media player can playhigh definitionrecordings ofD-VHStapes duplicated to

a computer using CapDVHS.exe. This offers another way to archive all D-VHS tapeswith the DRM copy freely tag. Using aFireWireconnection from cable boxes tocomputers, VLC can stream live, unencrypted content to a monitor or HDTV. VLCmedia player can display the playing video as thedesktop wallpaper, likeWindowsDreamScene, by usingDirectX, only available on Windows operating systems. VLCmedia player can createscreencastsand record the desktop. On Microsoft Windows,VLC also supports the Direct Media Object (DMO) framework and can thus makeuse of some third-partyDLLs. On most platforms, VLC can tune in to and viewDVB-C, DVB-T, and DVB-S channels. On Mac OS X the separate EyeTV plugin isrequired, on Windows it requires the card's BDA Drivers.

Controls or customize the interface (View->Customize) and add the record button to

Line 2 (which is shown by default). The recording from a shoutcast stream is stored

somewhere in your files under a name like vlc-record-Date-Time-Channel-

    Track.mp3 (e.g.: "vlc-record-2011-09-22-10h19m48s-Radio CAFF-Silencio - Arrabal Salvaje.mp3", when recording fromRadio CAFF(or

more precisely from the underlyingWinAmp stream). Under my german Windows XP

it was stored under "Eigene Dateien/Eigene Music" so I guess that you find it in an

english Windows under "My Documents/My Music/", I don't know where it will be

stored under Linux or any other OS (updates are welcome).

You can automagically cut the stream into tracks by relaying the stream
