Q: Why did you choose to cloth diaper*? A: I'm so glad you asked! The main reason that we chose cloth diapers is the savings. Babies are expensive, and this is a way to save a LOT of money. Cloth is also better for the environment and baby's skin. And also, it's CUTE. That might be the second most important reason. *I'm not sure anyone has actually asked me this. I just wanted you to know. Q: Isn't it gross putting poop in your washer? A: Well, no. I mean, haven't studies shown* that all underwear has traces of fecal matter on it? You don't put gobs of baby poop straight into your washer...that would be gross, of course. I have a toilet sprayer so I can spray the poop into the toilet, and then wash the diaper. You can also dunk your diapers in the toilet, but Gibson's poop is the consistency of really stick bread dough sometimes, so that doesn't work for us. If your baby is exclusively breastfed (no formula or solids), the poop is water soluble, so you can actually throw it straight into the washer. I have friends who still rinsed the poop, even though it technically could have gone in un-rinsed. *I have no evidence that studies have actually shown this. I think I read it somewhere on the Internet. Don't ask me to back that statement up, because I can't. Q: Is it really cheaper to cloth diaper? What about the money you spend on the extra water it takes to wash the diapers? A: Cloth diapering absolutely saves money. People claim that the increased cost of water negates any savings, but that's absolutely not true. Our water bill went up *maybe* $10 a month when we started cloth diapering...but we were also washing three loads of spit up clothes a day. So that extra cost is even less if you only count the diaper loads. We wash our cloth diapers every other day, so it's not like I constantly have a huge load of diapers going. We have spent less than $500 on all of our diapers (and we didn't do it as cheaply as we could have!), and we really won't need more diapers ever. We will probably buy a few more when another baby comes along, but for the most part, we have enough diapers to last through all of our children. According to my very scientific Google search, a parent can expect to spend $1500-$2000 on disposable diapers over the course of a child's diaper-wearing years. That's for one child. If I can spend $500 on diapers for all my children plus the minimal cost of water to wash them, I would say I'm saving money. Boom. Q: Isn't touching the poop GROSS? Blech! A: Um...I don't touch poop. I don't know how these people think I'm changing diapers, but it's exactly like changing a disposable. I wipe his butt, rinse the poop off (which absolutely does not require me to touch the poop), and throw it in a bag. Yes, poop gets on my hand every once in awhile, but I also got poop on my hand when we used disposables for the first month of Gibson's life. In my experience, there is no more poop exposure with cloth diapers than there is with disposables. Unless you're a weirdo and you put your hand in the poop on purpose.

HOME FRONT Like many couples, Michael and Jolene Zarkades have to face the pressures of everyday life--children, careers, bills, chores--even as their twelve-year marriage is falling apart. Then an unexpected deployment sends Jolene deep into harm’s way and leaves defense attorney Michael at home, unaccustomed to being a single parent to their two girls.

big booklovers! BABY WHISPERING This is the practical handbook that every mother needs when preparing for a new baby. Broken down into easy-to-follow timeframes from preparing for arrival and birth right through to 12 months, you'll quickly find answers to everything you need to know. Find out all about: your baby's basic needs and development.

THE SPARK Kristine Barnett’s son Jacob has an IQ higher than Einstein’s, a photographic memory, and he taught himself calculus in two weeks. At nine he started working on an original theory in astrophysics that experts believe may someday put him in line for a Nobel Prize, and at age twelve he became a paid researcher in quantum physics.

Page 30: Mini Me Magazine 003

This morning, I set my 14-month-old son up with his favorite toys in the lounge so I could have an absolutely necessary moment to myself in the bathroom. Now, this is usually a no go zone for my little cherub who has a fascination with my makeup brushes and putting un-identified objects in the loo. So this morning, while doing my “necessary” things in the bathroom, my son decided to pay me a visit. Needless to say, he lived up to the expectations of his gender and began tearing into anything and everything he could get his hands on. After a couple of minutes I was ready to tear my unruly, unwashed, vegemite smelling hair out. Was five minutes of alone time really too much to ask for? Feeling unaccomplished I picked up my big ball-of-cuteness and vowed to focus on only him for the next hour until naptime. Later that day, toddler all tucked up in bed for his second nap of the day, I dared a moment to myself to trawl my unattended Facebook timeline. What I came across was this video and let me tell you mumma, if you’re having a bad day, please take 5 minutes out of what little time you have to watch it. If you don’t have the time to watch as well as read this, the video is about a job interview for a mother, only the applicants have to no idea. What is discussed is the 24hour – 7days a week job with no breaks, no time off, and no pay. The applicant needed to have a high level of stamina, excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills, experience in medicine, finance and the culinary arts, be able to work in chaotic environments and have the ability to stay up all night with the “associate” when need be, among other things. Sound familiar? Now, by this time the applicants had made several comments on how inhumane, crewel and illegal this was. Here I am, wrapped up in this video with my cup of luke-warm tea, mouth gaping and tears in my eyes. Right there was a moment of recognition. This is what I’d been muddling through for the past year, all for the love of my son, for the immeasurable amount of joy he’s brought me. So, what I want to share with you is recognition. For those of you out there that have one, two, three or four under-5, I salute you, you brilliant beings. There will never be another mother out there like you. There will never be a better mother for your children than you. So, make yourself a warm cuppa, sit down and have a moment for yourself, even if it’s brief.

How far along are you? 16 weeks.

How are you sleeping? I love sleep so I sleep fine, I have always been a side sleeper so I hope

that will be fine through most of the pregnancy.

Best moment this month? Seeing the baby at the 12 week scan and seeing that it was a baby

not a blob. At the same time it was the worst moment as that was when we found out the liver was

on the outside in a sac attached to the stomach.

What do you miss? SUSHI! It was my once-a-week treat, you can make it but it's not the same.

Have you had any food cravings? Salty and sweet things.

Is anything making you queasy or sick? I can't cut raw meat because it grosses me out. I

have been super lucky with the sickness thing. I had maybe about a week when I was 6-7 weeks

pregnant of having the odd day being nauseous, apart from that I haven't "felt" pregnant.

Gender Predictions? First really wanted a girl (their clothes are way cuter), but think it might

be a boy; that's what all the friends and family think. I guess the positive side of needing extra care

and tests is that we have more scans, hopefully finding out the sex of baby will happen sooner. We

still hope to do the gender reveal with our family and close friends.

Symptoms? Growing boobies! They are tender sometimes but definitely growing! That's it. Had a bit of crazy hormone skin with breakouts.

Maternity Pads: This may be a given, but you are going to need them, and more than you think. In the last trimester of your pregnancy, get some every time you go shopping. Otherwise you WILL run out and it wont be pretty. Peri Bottle: If you have a vaginal delivery, things are going to be pretty sore down there. If you get stitches, it’s going to be worse. Keep a peri bottle next to the toilet and spay the area while you urinate, it will make the whole thing a whole lot more comfortable. Frozen Pads: Put a few drops of water on a pad and pop them in a bag in the freezer. If you do get stitches or you are having some sore days, put them in your underwear and it will feel like heaven. Nursing Pads: If you are breastfeeding you are going to leak, maybe not in the hospital, but once your milk comes down its all go. You will experience “let down”, where your body will express milk from BOTH breasts, not just the side baby is feeding on. Nipple cream & Cabbage leaves: Nipple cream is a must for breastfeeding mums, I recommend Lanolin. Also, try putting a cabbage leaf in your bra, it sounds strange but feels like heaven on swollen sore breasts. Drink Bottle: Again, for a breastfeeding mum, have a drink bottle where you nurse. You are going to get very thirsty. Nursing Bra: If you can, splurge on a good nursing bra, especially if you have bigger breasts. You will be more comfortable and your “girls” will be well looked after. Make sure you ask for a sizing and go shopping no more than 6 weeks before your due date to get a good fit. Nursing clothing: While not essential, nursing tops and pajamas do make your life easier in your sleep-deprived state. Snacks: You are going to be hungry on top of everything else, make sure you have things like muesli bars and nuts that you can snack on, time will be something you don’t have a lot of. Tummy Splint: This is not necessary again, but I am a big believer in these. I wore one from the day I delivered for 6 weeks. Originally it helped me feel more comfortable and tight, controlled my bleeding and in later weeks helped my diastasis recti, which is a separation of the stomach muscles. I used the Vespa Belly Wrap.

My goal as a photographer is to immortalize those sacred and special moments. That curly newborn with delicate fingers and silky skin, that bouncing baby engaged and fascinated and that toddler full of energy and curiosity. Family moments and delicate connections; like holding your baby in the palm of your hand. I am honoured to preserve these special moments to admire and share as they are gone in the blink of an eye. Specializing in newborn photography I have a creative passion for capturing the essence of your new bundle. The cohesion of a background in Interior Architecture and photography has given me a passion for finding that perfect balance between prop and pose. I look forward to working with you in the future.

Cassie always has her Nikon D700 camera within arms reach, her phone is constantly on loud and she never goes away on holiday. She has travelled from Auckland to Tauranga and everywhere in between to be at the birth of over 50 babies.

She is not there for the typical reasons; she is there to capture one of life’s most glorious moments, full inexplicable joy and love. She is there for all of those precious moments and feelings and immortalize them forever.

Cassie is a Birth Photographer. Originally the mother-of-three wanted to be a midwife as she is passionate about birth, but with young children she decided to wait for a few years before beginning her training. In the meantime she pursued another passion of hers and completed a Diploma of Digital Photography.

“To be honest I never actually knew what I wanted to photograph, until one day while browsing Facebook a birth image from a photographer in the USA came up in my newsfeed. It dawned on me at the moment, that birth was what I wanted to photograph!” Cassie admits.

capturing life

Page 55: Mini Me Magazine 003

So, merging both her passions, Cassie began her business, Capturing Life Birth Photography. Full of excitement and anticipation, Cassie set off to her first birth that she describes as being absolutely amazing.

“Sweet baby Kaylin was born rather quickly, I’m pleased I even made it to the birth! What an honor to witness such a special moment for a family.” After being a part of such a special occasion, Cassie knew that she was born to be a birth photographer. 18 months on and many births later, she still feels this way every time.

“Witnessing the moment that wee baby arrives and how much joy is in that room at the time. Blows my mind every single time.”

Cassie, only able to take a limited number of births each month, often gets women booking in with her as early as their fourth week of pregnancy. But even then, typically woman will book with her within the first trimester. In a typical session with Cassie, she asks to be contacted when the mum-to-be is in established labor. She will arrive in the birthing room quietly and take a fly-on-the-wall approach.

Cassie says, “I don’t tend to talk to anyone unless spoken to as it’s important for me to capture the birth as it would be if I wasn’t there. Many mothers have actually said they barely noticed I was present!” She will capture every moment, from laboring, the baby being born and around 2 hours after to catch those first precious encounters.

Page 56: Mini Me Magazine 003

The birth of your child for the first time is an unexplainable experience, just as important as you wedding day. Memories can fade, weathered by time. Cassie says, “birth is something that goes past very fast and unfortunately many moments are simply not remembered by the parents, those important moments that should never be forgotten, the support a husband/partner gives his wife in labour, the first moments when their baby takes his first breath, has his first cry and they have their first cuddle.”

These precious moments she is there to capture, so nothing is forgotten and families can experience that moment, pure and untouched for many years to come. “Just knowing what I have done for them by providing those one in a lifetime images and seeing how grateful they are, its simply priceless.”

"I love photography that captures a moment of human emotion, which surround us all day, every day. It's these moments that show us the authenticity of a person or character. Portraits of children are particularly special, as their innocence and ability to be themselves illustrates the genuine essence of truth. Even when they think they are something else, such as Superman or just playing dress up, it may be make-believe to us – but there is always something honest and real while in that moment of make-believe"
