Mini-Grid: The most
convenient solution for
rural electrification
Miguel Matias
CEO & Founder
Grupo Self Energy
RURAL ELECTRIFICATION FORUM
Maputo, 16th November 2011
Agenda
1. New technologies provide new solutions and opportunities
2. Mini-grids: the most convenient solution for Rural Electrification
3. Decentralised power generation – Self Energy case studies
4. Durban Climate Conference: the 30-30-30 African challenge
5. Innovation in Action: a new Self Energy service will be released today!
Agenda
New technologies provide new solutions and new opportunities
New Technologies
permits solar
photovoltaics panels
applications according
to architectural design:
BIPV
Thin Film solutions:
when space is not a
problem and costs are
Solar Thermal gets
cheaper and efficient
Solar Heat & Power:
Sun Power without
silicon: ex: stirling dish
New technologies provide new solutions and new opportunities
Advantages
- Initial Costs /5 years
+ Maintenance
+ Operation
+ Job creation
+ Grid experience
+ Sustainability
+ Renewable sources
+ Scalability
-Operational Costs
Mini-grids are the most convenient solution
(vs one panel at each house)

Self Energy is already building the future
Smartgrids EU Report 2007
Mini solar power plants on the rooftops
Ex: MARL: Lisbon Logistic Center
6MW PV rooftop
Promotor: MARL Energia / Fomentinvest
EX: 3MW PV in Gran Canaria school
rooftops (Spain, 2009)
2MW PV Industry rooftop (Alicante, Spain)
3-5 MW with mini-generation in Mozambique
Solar PV and CSP power plants can generate part of the
energy needs of every building, without losses in
transport and distribution
From 10kW to 10MW
No need for PV mega projects out of cities. The sun is
decentralised.
However for CSP Heat&Power, big size still matters.
Each house can generate and sell energy
• The microgeneration law in Portugal
defines a feed-in tariff until 3.68 kW.
-New law will open mini-generation until
250 kW with lower tariff.
- Mini-grids and smart-grids are key
Self Energy Solutions has specific brands
for Solar PV and solar thermal and has
contracted and installed more than 200
sites
Ex: In Mozambique, 50 schools, 50 health
care centers and 50 water pumps are being
installed off-grid with solar PV and batteries
Ex: 130 micro-generation (3,68kW) PV
installations for Water Company (Portugal, 2009)
CHP – Combined Heat and Power and Trigeneration
• CHP is the most convenient solution for buildings where
heat is needed as long as electricity during all year (ex:
hot water, climatised swimming pool, industrial
processes, etc)
• Combined with other measures like efficient lighting
can reduce more than 60% CO2 emissions and up to 40%
cost reduction.
Self Energy contracted the
first ESCO CHP agreement in
Portugal with a swimming
pool and with a High School,
including also solar thermal.
3 hotels in Algarve contracted ESCO CHP of 450 kW +
150 m2 solar thermal (under implementation)
Energy Efficiency: solar thermal is mandatory
• In the residential sector and in the industrial sector the
energy efficiency is the key because there are new
mandatory audits and certifications in place since Jul 2008
• “Bioclimatic architecture” could also help and should be
introduced when its needed
• Lighting efficiency is also key, including the use of Leds.
Self Energy design and
build complex solar
thermal solutions, like
Grupo Inocencio
(Loures, Portugal) for
12 residential
buildings, with 150 kWt
and Kings College
(London,UK – Design)

Innovation in energy for Africa: solar dessalination; solar cooling; low cost meter
• The smart-meter is the gateway to the Energy Internet, where you can
measure efficiency and also from where you can sell to the grid .
• Web site can be more efficient like www.selfenergy.eu: less 7w/day/user
Self Energy Engineering
and Innovation with
LNEG / INETI and also
with Univ. Nova and
IPSetubal is developing
3 projects, regarding
solar desalination(also
with Ambilogos), solar
trigeneration and
hydrogen fuel cell
application tests
Self Energy Engineering
and Innovation with
Algarve Energy Park
has signed a MOU to develop join efforts in
developing an energy
cluster in Algarve,
starting by the stirling
dish project to be
placed there as also
the pilot stage of the
solar dessalination
project (SELF WATER)

- The first Self-Energy Service Company (sESCO) that combines the energy service provider competences with the ability to self generate part of of energy needs, through renewall, zero emissions micro power generation.
- We provide a complete suite of cost-effective integrated energy solutions and services to maximize the value of energy resources; using Engineering, Procurement and Contracting knowledge along with available public grants to minimize the investment needs. We are managing more than 55M€ contracts and more than 30MW in different stages, mainly solar PV and ESCO.
- Self Energy Group started in 2006 in Portugal and it is owned by its Founders , by Soares da Costa Group, by Inovcapital (the biggest portuguese VC) and also by NAVES (AESE/IESE).
- International: It started Self Energy UK in 2008, Self Energy Spain in early 2009.
- In September 2009 started Self Energy Mozambique, with relevant local partners like Electrotec and Visabeira Global and already with a good portfolio of contracts in mini-renewable power plants, both in solar and mini-hydro
- Self Energy has also projects in Jordan, Angola and Poland.

The 30-30-30 African Challenge
European Union settled a 20-20-20 internal binding objective for 2020
20% Renewables; 20% reduction in CO2; 20% increase in energy efficiency
Africa will have a major opportunity to take some leadership in Durban Dec 2012
Africa are not getting benefit from Kyoto Protocol CDM yet
One of Africa main challenges is electrification
Africa has fantastic renewable energy sources
So the challenge could be a 30-30-30 objective for Africa for 2020:
30% Electricity Generation from Renewable Sources;
30% of CDM total investment in Africa;
30% average electrification access, with a minimum of 25% in each country
It is important to define clear objectives and how to do it
