students from other institutions,

and that their achievement

is directly comparable to the

achievement of students who

complete their entire degree at

SFU. The SFU research also shows

that Langara students who transfer

to SFU have the highest degree

completion rate (68.3 percent)

when compared to students from

the other Lower Mainland public

colleges. In addition, the array

of Continuing Studies courses

at Langara is the largest, most

varied, and of the highest quality

available from a public post-

secondary college in BC.

Our campus combines the

convenience of an urban setting

with a peaceful environment that

includes lawns, wetlands and trees,

Langara College Looks to the Future

It is my great pleasure to welcome

you to Langara College.

This year marks our 10th

anniversary as an independent

publicly-funded college. We are

proud of the many successes we

have enjoyed over the past decade,

the foundation for which was laid

in the almost 30 years of operation

that preceded our independence as

an institution.

Linda HolmesPresident

with a golf course and YMCA next

door. Our central location on West

49th Avenue is easily accessible by

bus, bicycle, or car.

Langara College attracts thousands

of students each year who discover

that smaller class sizes, award-

winning instruction, and readily

available, friendly services make

their post-secondary education

experience more successful.

Please visit our campus during

our Open House on November 5

and 6, 2004. Come and explore

our program offerings, meet our

helpful employees and students

and experience the Langara College

brand of education.

Linda Arnold & Martin GersonDeans of Instruction

Between 75 and 80 percent of

the full-time equivalent students

enrolled in the Arts and Science

University Transfer program are

enrolled in courses that may

culminate in an Associate Degree

or Diploma that is transferable to

universities.

But in the next five years, certain

key areas are likely to expand

to four-year degree-granting

programs, meaning that students

won’t need to transfer at all.

Four-year Langara College

graduates will achieve a

baccalaureate degree with applied

outcomes. “Applied outcomes”

means that rather than a liberal arts

degree, which provides education

without necessarily linking it to

a career, the baccalaureate will

prepare the student for a certain

profession. Arnold and Gerson

believe the move is a natural

transition for the College.

“The Ministry of Advanced

Education is beginning to recognize

that universities don’t have an

unlimited capacity for transfer

students,” Arnold explains.

At this point, with the College’s

reputation for producing students

who are more than equal to the

challenges of university, “ Langara

College is very well-positioned

to provide more spaces for

baccalaureate degrees in the

province,” says Gerson.

The provincial legislation necessary

to make such a change has been

passed, and a proposal is in the

works. The first program likely to

make the change is Nursing.

Welcome to Langara CollegeLangara College has earned a

reputation for academic excellence

in the post-secondary system.

Evidence for this reputation is the

high level of success our students

achieve when they graduate from

Langara and pursue a university

degree or embark on their career.

UBC accepts more university

transfer students into first-degree

programs from Langara than

from any other college in BC,

and more than 90 percent of our

career program graduates find

employment in their chosen field

within four months of graduation.

Research shows that on average,

Langara students who transfer

achieve higher cumulative GPAs at

Simon Fraser University (SFU), on

degree completion, than transfer

“We’re really in an evolutionary

process right now,” according to

Linda Arnold, one of the College’s

two Deans of Instruction. Her

colleague, Martin Gerson, agrees.
