Working Bee
Last Friday saw a small but committed and hard-working group of volunteer families and staff, complete some great improvements and upgrades to our school grounds.
I would like to extend a huge thanks to the loyal group of volunteers and staff who assisted in making our great school even better!
Day One Foundation Transition
Yesterday saw our first formal visit from our 2017 Foundation students and families.
On behalf of our entire school community I would like to extend a warm welcome
(officially) and trust they will have an enjoyable and highly successful education at Miners Rest Primary School. Many of our new Foundation students will be graduates of our
Kindergarten and if yesterday was an indication, they arrived well settled and prepared for a huge 2017 at school.
Bruce Cup
Please note, I will be absent from the school for the week 24-28 October (next week). I will be attending the Bruce Cup National Tennis Championships over 9 days in Albury as
the Coach/Manager of the Victorian team.
Mrs Liz Hay will be in charge during my absence.
Congratulations to Tammy (our Business Manager) who represented Victoria last week and
took home bronze from the National Masters Hockey Championships held in Tasmania!
Did You Know…?
We are having a “Writer’s Extravaganza” from Tuesday 8 November – Thursday 10
November.
All students will have a writing piece from the Theme ‘Celebrations’ to share and display over the three days. There will be a special assembly and viewing times for families to come and see the great work of all our students.
We can’t wait to share this event with our community and hope you will all save some time
to come and be part of this great academic event!

Dale’s Dribble: Traffic
Can I please encourage all community members who witness any road behaviours or parking nearby our school that contravenes laws and ultimately endangers the safety of
our students, to document them for me.
I don’t require your name, just time, date, location and what occurred. I am trying to
build a case to present to authorities to have improved surveillance of our school at drop off and pick up time.
Please note, by-laws officers patrol the area intermittently and will mail infringement
notices, so you may not know you’re being observed…
Joke of the Week! Zac C – Room 12
Q – What did one snowman say to the other?
A – Dude, can you smell carrots?
Head Lice
We have had numerous reports of Head Lice within the school community.
We ask all parents/carers to continue to be vigilant in checking children’s hair and commence treatment if lice or eggs are found.

Introducing BIG WRITE... We prepare for our writing by talking about our topic at home and during our BIG TALK session. When we enter the classroom after recess we are ready to begin our BIG WRITE! We dim the lights and light the candles (We love our aromatic caramel candle!). We also have calming music playing on the CD player. Our writing time begins...

Seasons for Growth - Program Term 4
Seasons for Growth is a small group loss and grief education program. The
Children’s Program strengthens the social and emotional wellbeing of children who
are dealing with significant loss or change. This may include the death of a loved
one, parental divorce or separation, moving house or school, as well as many
other life changes and losses.
Small groups of 4-7 children work with a trained adult Companion (facilitator –
Kerrie, Student Wellbeing) supporting children in learning new ways to share,
think about and respond to the changes and losses in their lives. Children learn
that they are not alone in dealing with the effects of change, loss and grief. They
build their understanding and communication, decision making and problem
solving skills as part of a supportive peer group.
The Seasons for Growth Children and Young People’s Program takes place over a
structured eight week period filled with peer-to-peer learning opportunities - with
time to talk and listen as well as take part in activities including drawing, music,
art, journaling, roleplays and story telling. A celebration session and two follow up
‘reconnector’ sessions complete the program, and each session explores an age
appropriate concept, for example “Change is a part of life” and “Caring for my
feelings”. The story of the seasons is used to explain the cycles of life, including
change and loss, and provides a valuable metaphor for children to explore and
understand their own story.
Should you wish to submit your child/ren to be considered for a place this term,
please submit student names to the school office at the earliest convenience.
Note: siblings cannot be considered for inclusion in the same group however it is
anticipated the program will be offered again in 2017.

Run Ballarat
Run Ballarat 2016 is almost here! This Sunday, Miners Rest will be well represented by students, parents, staff, friends and relations.
It is great that so many people have signed up already, and there is still time if you want to get involved. Currently we have 141 registered team members, behind only St Columba’s who have 156 participants.
Hopefully we can build up to 150 entrants by Sunday which would be a great achievement for our school and community.
Virtual runners
If you would like to support the cause and our team but can’t make it on the day, you can register as a virtual runner. When you sign up as a virtual runner
you can designate someone to run on your behalf, and you will still receive a t-shirt and help raise funds for the Children’s Ward of Ballarat Hospital. Feel free to select me (Mr. Ben Mitchell) to run on your behalf.
Change of location
It is important to note that due to the recent rains the event has been moved from North Gardens to the oval at Ballarat High School. The running/ walking course will largely remain the same as previously advertised.
Trouble signing up?
If you have any questions or require assistance with signing students up I am available and more than happy to assist. Please come and see me, I can even help you through the process using a computer here at school. I will have some computers set up in Room 17 after school on Thursday if you want to come in.

taking part in events to assist in keeping an eye on them.
It should be a great day.
Once again, thank you to everybody who is supporting this worthwhile cause. Keep an eye on the Run Ballarat and school Facebook pages for any further updates.

Regional Athletics
Last Friday the Regional Athletics were held at Llanberris Reserve in Ballarat.
23 students represented our school and competed against the very best athletes in the region.
Last year we had 6 students qualify for the Regional Athletics so it was fantastic to see the number of students who represented Miners Rest in-crease dramatically.
All students should be very proud of their efforts.
We had many students who were successful on the day including:
Jude McGuire 1st in the 1500mt
Jack Diamond 2nd in the 1500mt and 3rd – 800mt
Archie Caldow 1st in the 1500mt and 800mt
Charlise Thomas 3rd in the Shot put
Cobi Wilbert, Shiloh Abbott, Aislinn McCarthy and Zahara Lenaghan 3rd – 4x100m relay
Harpur Adam a finalist in the 200mt
Congratulations and good luck to Jack, Jude and Archie who qualified for the State Champions which is held in Melbourne next Monday.

Miners Rest Gorse Rebate Program
(Miners Rest Landcare Group).
Spring is here and it is that time again! Have you had a look at your gorse lately to see how much it has grown over winter? Have you noticed the plants in full flower? We are coming into a good time of year to get stuck into gorse control.
There is still Gorse rebate funding available for gorse control, which helps to reclaim grazing land for stock; or assist with your revegetation project; or just to get rid of it as part of bushfire fuel hazard reduction. The rebate offers:
50% off contractor’s fees to mulch, slash or to spray
50% off cost of chemical* (Some chemicals may require an ACUP permit*)
50% off the cost of fuel to remove it yourself or hire of landcare spray
unit.
I am ready for any unique challenges you wish to show to me including crown land issues, roadsides issues, difficult terrains or approaches that have not
worked in the past.
Also please be aware that a similar program is running in the Creswick and Invermay areas as well – so please let neighbours, family and friends know!
Please feel free to call me even if you don’t want to apply for the rebate but just want to get some advice about the best forms of control.
My phone number is: 0417 594 225 or email me: [email protected]. Facebook: Gorse Project Officer – Ballarat Region. Twitter: @GorsePOBallarat
