Mineral-Gem of the NW-Discover it! www.MineralLake.com
The grand opening of the Mt. Rainier Regional Visitors
Center in the Elbe Depot took place on Tuesday April
1st. It was a huge success with over 50 people visiting the center throughout the
day. Special political guests included Lewis
County Commissioner Lee Grose, Eatonville Mayor Tom Smallwood, and
Senator Marilyn Rasmussen.
Randy Oxford, one of the
promoters of the Mt. Rainier Music Festival, led
the group with a toast of sparkling cider in champagne glasses. He
congratulated Gary Johnson of the Mineral Lake Event
Center and Ramona Sheppard of the Mineral Lake Lodge, for all of their
hard work to get the center
going. Gary spoke to the group about needing
volunteers and Ramona introduced the volunteers
that were present. Marilyn Rasmussen gave a magnificent speech about the
vision of the regional center and how important it will be
for the Elbe, Mineral and Morton areas as well as for the Eatonville, Ashford, Mt.
Rainier and Packwood areas. She said her dreams of
seeing the areas opening up for tourism with the train, will begin with this visitor’s
center. She was very impressed with this volunteer
effort. Reporter Jeanette Chamberlain from the Morton
Journal was there to report on the event and took photos of part of the volunteer group
that is responsible for this grassroots effort.

Have you seen this film clip on www.visitrainier.com
featuring the 2008 Mt. Rainier Music Festival in Mineral,
WA? As you probably know by now, the Mt. Rainier Music Festival was a great
success! And, in case you didn’t get to attend, now you can join in the fun on
VisitRainier.com. Kelli Clouse put together the video clip of the concert for
VisitRainier.com and sent us a nice note along with the link to share with us.
VisitRainier is revamping their website and it is better than ever!
Gary Johnson of Mineral Lake Event Center, one of the sponsors of this year’s
Benefit for the Mountain, said of the music festival, “The event was a great
success. We had approx 1200 people pass through over the weekend. All the
bands, vendors, and participants are looking forward to doing it again next year.
Visit Rainier, sent a camera crew in and they made an excellent video of the
event, the town of Mineral and the entire area. This video will be a tourism plus
for the Visit Rainier campaign. We will be presenting donations to the Mt
Rainier Trail system and the Nisqually Land Trust within a week. Our
attendance was about double this year over last, according to the experts who
were on site. Next year should double again. This venue is a definite plus for
the entire area.”
Besides the VisitRainier video, additional photos of the concert can be found in
this issue and on Randy Oxford’s website www.randyoxford.com
Follow the “Take a Sneak Peek at our
New Website” link on the VisitRainier
home page. And turn up your speakers,
you’ll be glad you did!
Hi all!
This is Kelli Clouse, I was at the
festival shooting a video for
VisitRainier. Well, it's all done and I
thought you might get a kick out of
it!
Enjoy!

Mineral Lake Event Center Hosts Opening Night Gala & Three Days of Films & Workshops
Global Awareness Links Films Selected For This Year's Rainier Independent Film Festival Screenings, workshops and gatherings will be held in select venues in Mt.
Rainier's Ashford Valley and Mineral May 2 through 4, 2008.
ASHFORD VALLEY (at Mt. Rainier), Washington - April 3, 2008 - The
Rainier Independent Film Festival has selected 21 compelling, artistic and
inspirational films to be screened from May 2 through 4 at three venues in the
Ashford Valley, just miles from the Nisqually entrance to Mount Rainier
National Park. The festival will also include workshops, social gatherings,
panels, audience-voted awards and an awards ceremony. Many of the
filmmakers and actors will be in attendance.
Many of this year's films are linked by subject matter that reveals or addresses
issues of global awareness, including environmental and humanitarian
concerns. Among them are the explosive documentary Uncounted, by David
Earnhardt, who will field audience questions after the screening; Sympathetic
Details, with Ryan Sands and other actors from HBO's The Wire; and film
festival circuit favorite, The Rat Thing, directed by Kevin Keresey; and the
surreal internal narrative, Soliloquy.
The opening night film will be The Flyboys, a high-action, family-oriented,
feel good feature-length film on coming of age, directed by Rocco DeVilliers,
who will be introducing the film, and starring Stephen Baldwin and Tom
Sizemore. It will be screened at the Mineral Lake Event Center at 6PM on
Friday, May 2, and followed by the Opening Night Gala, at 8PM.
For a full schedule, please go to www.rainierfilmfest.com/schedule.html.
A pass to all screenings, workshops and receptions for all three days is $50. A
day-pass for all screenings and workshops on Saturday or Sunday is $20. A
ticket to the festival launch on Friday including two free drinks is $15.
Tickets are available online through Brown Paper Tickets and at Whittaker
Mountaineering and Bunkhouse, Ashford, Capital Hill Arts Center in Seattle,
and the Silver Platter Records stores at Crossroads Mall, Bellevue and at
South Sound Center in Tukwila. A ticket for a single screening or workshop
is $6 and can be purchased at any of the three screening venues or online.
The Rainier Independent Film Festival is dedicated to providing truly
independent filmmakers a venue to have their films screened. Nestled in the
tranquil foothills surrounding Mt. Rainier, the Ashford Valley provides the
perfect setting for the first annual RIFF. Screening venues range from a yurt
to a 1940s historical school in Mineral with a capacity of up to 300 people.
For more information as well as a full screening schedule, please access
http://www.rainierfilmfest.com For destination information, please access
www.visitrainier.com.
PLEASE NOTE: Local volunteers are needed at the Ashford and Mineral
locations. For information about volunteering, go to

Mineral Arts & Crafts Guild
artists featured at BCJ Gallery
in Morton
Ann Brown and Dana Larson of Mineral
are the April featured artists at the
Barbara Clevenger Johnson Fine Arts
Gallery, which adjoins the Roxy Theater
in Morton. Gallery hours during April
are Wednesday through Saturdays from
10AM to 5PM.
Ann Brown is showing her beautifully
intricate scrimshaw art which she does
on ancient mammoth ivory and her
decorative painted gourds. Ann has
lived in Mineral for many years and is
the founder of Mineral Arts & Crafts
Guild. Before retiring and moving to
Mineral permanently, she was one of the
founding members of Broadway Gallery
in Longview. Many of us have seen her
work at the Annual Arts & Craft shows
that the Guild holds in Mineral in April
and December.
Dana Larson of Buena Vista Pottery in
Mineral is widely known for his
beautiful Raku pottery. Raku is the
traditional, low-fired pottery developed
in the 16th
century in Japan. It is the
technique used in the making of the tea
bowls used in the traditional Japanese tea
ceremony. The Raku process produces a
beautifully crackled and oxidized glaze.
Dana demonstrated the Raku technique
last October at the Mt. Rainier Art
Festival. If you missed the festival and
his demo last year, he will be back, by
popular demand, at the October 2, 4 & 5,
2008 Mt Rainier Art Festival in Ashford.
Dana’s Raku will also be for sale at the
Mineral Event Center on April 24, 25 &
26.
