The little black dress is every woman’s best friend. But it’s easy to get caught in the trap of selecting which dress to buy and forgetting all about accessorising it until the last minute. With the usual round of Christmas parties coming up, it’s worth spending some time thinking about how you will make your black dress uniquely yours – as well as discovering how you can dress it up to be worn on more than one occasion.

Jewellery is an excellent way to finish off an outfit, and it doesn’t have to be the expensive kind either. Costume jewellery is often made to very high standards, and even if you don’t have pierced ears you can usually find clip on earrings to complete an outfit. Think about less obvious accessories too, such as a brooch or pin.

Choosing a specific colour to complement a black dress is a good way of making it look completely different.. Think about the kind of parties you are likely to be going to and buy your accessories accordingly.

Clever use of accessories can also make party dresses more affordable. Instead of feeling obliged to buy a brand new party dress for every occasion, you can buy one or two more expensive dresses

and change their overall look by purchasing a wider range of accessories that you can mix and match as required.

Accessories don’t always have to be small either. A shawl or beaded bed jacket is a fairly inexpensive item to add to an outfit, it can look very elegant, and it will also solve the problem of having to find a coat that will go with the black dress you have already bought.

You might be thinking that solid colours are the best way to accessorise a party dress, but patterns can also work extremely well. They help to disguise the fact you might be wearing the same dress again, if as is a frequent occurance, you go to more than one party where many of the guests are the same.

In short, the little black party dress is a very versatile item to have in your wardrobe for the upcoming party season. But make sure you devote some of your shopping trip to buying all those accessories as well, in order to get the best out of your outfit. You can then be assured of having a festive season to remember.

Finding the perfect dress can be immensely satisfying. And even if it only ever gets worn two or three times, you’ll know that at those times you’ll be looking and feeling your absolute best – and that’s the best investment.

It is essential to choose the dress according to the occasion but if you’re going to spend a little more on it, then consider its future wear-ability in mind. Keep hunting for dresses and don’t just shop in time, giving yourself time and choosing a selective dress will not only make you look extremely gorgeous but will attract the attention of others too. So pick your dresses wisely and get ready to enjoy complements from both sexes. Ready to party?

Jesmond’s Late Night Hide-away- A vintage performance from As You Like It

As You Like It, situated just off Sandyford road in Jesmond, is a ‘trendy

eating house bar and terrace’. The relaxed, opulent and roomy space

boasts an appealing collection of mix and match furniture pieces, huge

chandeliers and extravagant curtains, accented with floral wallpaper.

As You Like It was just the way we liked it once we got through the front doors, the exterior may look like a seventies office block but on the inside it’s very

pleasing on the eye.The venue spans three floors and

includes a function room with bar that is often used for weddings, a ground floor bustling bar where you can find people sipping cocktails, a dining area

and a garden terrace and another beautiful dining area

upstairs.Not long ago it was voted seventh

sexiest restaurant in the world by The Observer and it’s easy to see why. It’s great for an intimate meal with your partner but its beauty lies in the fact

that it is a venue for all.When I visited there were families out

for tea, couples and a large group of friends just celebrating the weekend.

For those who prefer exclusive dining the restaurant also has private

dining areas with secret entrances, overlooking the grand piano.

On a Friday and Saturday As You Like

Where to eat.....

It, plays host to ‘The Supper club’ Jesmond’s only late night license.

With live music – anything from live blues, soul, swing or jazz it forms

the dream background to laid back lounging and social grazing.

I, therefore obviously chose to visit on a Friday night with a couple of friends. Get yourself there before

10pm, and there’s no entry fee and your guaranteed a good seat. We

chose a cosy booth, with the perfect view of the stage.

It wasn’t just the interior that impressed, the menu did too.

As You Like it offers a fusion of traditional British grub and globally

inspired dishes from acclaimed chef Brian James. Japanese seven-

spiced salmon with soba noodles or Moroccan vegetable tagine are just some of the exciting dishes on offer,

or maybe a more straightforward homemade beef burger is up your

street.It caters for everyone.

We started off with a couple of sharing platters, one of grilled

pitta bread with olives, hummus, tzatziki, and chilli cream cheese

dips, (at £9.95), and the other, warm camembert studded with fresh

garlic, rosemary and accompanied by warm bread, (£12.95).

The dips were superb, very obviously home-made, and extremely moreish, the chilli cream cheese being the star of the show.

Simple starter platters that managed to be stand-out, very generous servings and more than enough for the four of us.

Sharing a few starters was a really social way to start our evening, while we caught up on the gossip.

With a cocktail menu to rival the best, your night is sure to be off to the best start.

As You Like It is simply the place to be this year and it is obvious as to why this corner of Jesmond is fast gaining an enviable reputation.

Fantasy becomes Reality......The Fallen Angel Hotel

Where to stay.....

Fancy a shower in the Tardis? Or a sauna in a garden shed? How about relaxing with a film in a Rolls Royce? Have you ever fancied a holiday with a difference? Maybe you’d like to be transported to post war Paris, a chic New York designer apartment, or sleep in an Edwardian Express train. You can delve in to a fantasy world at the superb Fallen Angel Restaurant and Hotel. The concept is certainly off the wall but after a £2m facelift, North-East businessman John Marshall, the man behind Durham pine, has transformed the residence in to a luxury getaway where guests can even experience the life of a Hollywood actor. Attend your own private premiere in a Rolls Royce, strut over the red carpet in to the silver-screen themed apartment with private cinema. Bring the outside in with your own garden apartment, complete with grass carpet, luxury sauna, hot tub and River Wear views. Their expenditure is matched only by their imagination.

Mr Marshall added: “I was trying to create an adventure for people who

stay here more than just another cardboard box room, somewhere that

if you came for a visit you never forget.”And he has done just that.

This boutique hotel offers 10 completely indulgent, incomparable

and individually themed rooms in the heart of Durham City in a Georgian

Grade II listed Town House and secluded Garden Apartments. There are views of the World Heritage site Cathedral and Castle to the front and the university’s cricket pitch and the

beautiful River Wear to the rear.

Normally the term ‘themed hotel’ would strike fear into the heart of

anyone looking for a classy get-away. Not here.

“As soon as you come into the reception you can see it is a unique place. There

are wonderful views across Durham as well,” said Mr Marshall.

Every detail of these impeccably themed rooms has been thought of, in the most elegant of manners. From the ‘grass carpet’ in Le Jardin, to the ‘train seat sofa’ in The Edwardian Express, to the personal popcorn machine in The

premier.Just beware of the outdoor hot-tubs,

the Durham climate is not designed for al fresco bathing.

“Theatrical is the word I keep coming back to when I’m describing the hotel,”

Mr Marshall said. It’s how I imagine a lot of people would like to decorate their homes but because they have to

keep the furniture, they play it safe, because we’re a hotel we can be a bit

more outrageous.”

Mr Marshall predicted a popular choice might be the cinema-themed room.“You press a button and it reveals a

cinema screen from behind a curtain,” he said.

“We also have a popcorn machine

and a gold Rolls-Royce outside where you can sit in and sip a

glass of champagne.”

There’s also a hot tub on the deck with views out over the River Wear.”

Given the luxurious surroundings, the owners expect their hotel be a favourite with people celebrating a

special occasion or wanting to treat a partner.

However, the Fallen Angel offer heavily reduced rates when booking at short

notice online, meaning you can get a slice of this hotel heaven at up to a

70% discount!

On my visit, I was lucky enough to stay in the Doctor Zhivago Russian Bride,

themed suite. Romance at its best. With a bed fit for a queen, and a Jacuzzi bath

plus sauna in your room, it is hard to justify a reason to leave.

The staff are excellent; the breakfast included in the price (in bed, at no

extra cost) was English at its best. If full English isn’t for you, then I can

recommend the bagel with scrambled egg and smoked salmon very happily.

Inside the hotel, there is a nautical themed cafe bistro which is also open

to non-residents and the reception area is themed in the style of a

victorian gentlemen’s club. The food is tasty and reasonably priced.

From the moment you enter the reception lounge you will feel you have been transported to another time and place - a kind of parallel universe where nothing is quite as it usually is.

This Jules verne inspired area is the beginning of your adventure. Hot tubs, saunas and steam showers might beguile you, or gold Rolls Royce, popcorn machine and huge cinema screens might be more to your liking. Cruella’s velvet sleigh bed, a huge oak four poster or the Russian Bride’s white painted carved bed might lull you to sleep, or Le Jardin’s turf carpet might just intrigue you. There is a surprise for everyone in one room or another – the choice is yours. Tempted...?
