    Speakers’ Profile

    • Babar Ali, World’s Youngest Headmaster: How often do you come across a nine-years old

who wants to open a school for underprivileged children? Babar Ali did not only had this idea, healso executed it at that age in 2002. The news report helped him get noticed. Nobel LaureateAmartya Sen invited him to speak at Shantiniketan, while Ramakrishna Mission started helping himwith books and Stationary.

In 2009, BBC did a story on Babar Ali which brought him a lot more attention. Later he was invited totalk on prestigious platforms like TED and INK and he was also featured on Satyamev Jayate-Hostedby Amir Khan.

    year PU Course.

    •  Ramesh Bijlani:  Director of Mirambika Free Progress School, a school where Children and theirdiyas (didi , bhaiya) are responsible for dusting, tidying and beautifying their spaces. A book that isloved by one child may be less interesting to another. Normally, books are used only from the age ofsix onward. At no point are standard text books used. Clothes express some thing of the personality:no uniformality, no school uniform. It is important that clothes should not obstruct the movements

of the children.in July 1981, Mirambika opened with fifty seven children and ten teachers…. within a few years itwent on to become a very significant experiment in ‘Free Progress’ education – an education for thefree and unhampered growth of the psychic being.

Dr. Ramesh Bijlani(attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology) is the Director of MirambikaFree Progress School run by Sri Aurobindo Society. He is the author of more than 200 scientificpapers, more than 40 popular articles, and 10 books, including a 1000-page textbook for medicalstudents. His Interest in alternative education and making the present system of education more

Speakers’ Profile • Sachin Desai: founder of University of life: Imagine a school without walls. Sounds too

good to be true. The programme is in sync with an innovative methodology that links school

education with real life situations. The ‘school without walls’ programme has been initiated

by Syamantak, an organisation that believes in the natural learning process. Sachin set up the

programme in his native village of Dhamapur in an 80-year-old house. Sachin says, “ when I

was in school I got opportunity to stay with school dropouts and slow learners and realised

that India’s huge 70 per cent drop-out rate is because students don’t learn skills, division into

curriculum and co-curriculum detaches education from actual life. Since life and education

merge in University of Life every activity is curriculum for us. A journey together where man

and nature confront and converge. At a time when debates rage on what and how children

should learn, here is an attempt……a pointer – University of Life. University of Life was alsorecently featured in Amitabh Bachchan’s Show Aaj Ki Raat Hai Zindagi.

    • Sandeep Desai: ”One man army”, most of the 40 lakh aam aadmis who take thesuburban railways everyday know him, several lakhs have chatted with him and, crucially,

thousands have trusted him enough to give him their money. A former member of the Forum

for Fairness in Education, Desai was chief mover of several public interest litigations against

politician-led educational institutes including for unfair fees and more. Education is the cause

he is closest to, he is quite clear about that. Desai said: “There is a thin line between begging

and collecting vidya-daan (educational alm) for educational reforms and one needs to

understand the difference- the beggars take money to fulfill their needs while I collect alms

    for others.”

Currently he is running 5 schools- 4 in maharashtra & 1 in Rajasthan. Desai has received

various awards and his act has been widely appreciated in the media. But this hasn’t slowedhim down.

    • Brian Jenkins: When the entire neighbourhood plunges into darkness-thanks to the StateElectricity Board’s crippling power cuts--the students and their teachers at Sholai School, are notpower-starved for a moment. Their school was never connected to the grid. It uses renewableenergy to meet all its requirements. The man who made this mechanism possible is their principal,Mr. Brian Jenkins, a British-born social anthropologist. Painstakingly, he has built a creative greencampus with the greater social good in mind. This disciple of J. Krishnamurthy is living his utopian

dream in the verdant hills of Palani. In Sussex, he met J Krishnamurthi. After obtaining his BA, hestarted teaching in Krishanamurthi School in brockwood park,UK. Later he came to India and startedbuilding Sholai School in 1989. Sholai School is affiliated with the Cambridge University, UK,. Schooldoes not believe in examinations, though teachers give tests to students at times, to check theirlevel of learning. Groups of children run their own farm plots within the 30-acre organic farm at theschool. Students have skills, these include Farming, Woodwork and a class called Machine Shed.Electrical, plumbing, and construction work is also taken up. Heating requires a lot of energy andthe proven alternative technology for the school is the Solar Water Heater. Sholai has two big (4 M³

and 25 M³) biogas plants that provide gas for the kitchen, Food Processing and Science labs.www.mindmingle.org
