Fanfare for the Common Man was written for the CincinnatiSymphony Orchestra in 1942. That year, the CSO commissioned 18 different composers to write fanfares for each of their concerts to honor those fighting in WorldWar II. This one by Aaron Copland became the most famous of all of these works.

• Take a moment to notice where you feel your breath moving in your body. Where do you feel the rise of the inhale (when you breath in) and the fall of the exhale (whenyou breathe out). After a minute or so, see if you caninvite your inhale and exhale to follow a steady tempo, sothat your in and out breath are the same duration.

• After you are able to notice your breath, see if you can sense your own pulse or heartbeat. Put your hand on your heart and see if you can find the thump, thump, thumping of your own pulse.

• When you listen to Fanfare for the Common Man (you can find it at www.citysilence.org), what does it make you feel? What do you imagine when you listen to the music?

Try these mindfulness techniques while listening to Fanfare for the Common Man or any time. You can calm and focus yourself

whenever you need to.
