By Sam EricksonUsually, the term home improvement
leads people to think about the physicalstructures of the place-plumbing, insulationand wiring, but you can improve the lookand feel of your home this fall with just afew small changes. You don't have to signany paperwork with a contractor or spenda lot of money in order to make thesechanges.
Consider changing the colors of youraccent pieces. Everyone decorates forChristmas, and having a few pieces of fallthat you procure this year and keep fromyear to year can help bring the outsidefeeling in. Fall leaves, holly and vegeta-bles like pumpkins and squash will imme-diately trigger warm associations in yourhome. Got a big elm in your front yard?
When the leaves start to change colors, bring in the best-looking ones, dry themout and arrange them on a coffee oraccent table. You could also string themup into the chandelier above your diningroom table, adding visual height to theroom.

Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told I have no bone leftunder my dentures. I keep getting sharp stinging painwhen I bite down and my dentures pop out when Iopen my mouth even with denture adhesive. What aremy options and how much does this cost?
Dear Jan, I am sorry you are having problems withyour dentures. Teeth maintain bone. When teeth areremoved you can lose 40% of the remaining bone thefirst year after tooth loss. This bone loss will continueevery year until implants are placed to stop bone loss.
This means you can lose height of bone and width ofbone continuously. When you wear dentures thedentures may appear tight but over time as the boneresorbs the dentures get looser and looser. That is whydentures should be relined or remade every 3-5 yearsto try and maintain a better fit between the dentureacrylic and the bone.
Dentures can move up to 1/2 an inch during anormal chewing cycle. That movement coupled withbone loss can quickly lead to exposure of nerves thatcan cause pain from denture pressure.
Solutions to nerve pain involve stabilizing yourdentures or moving into "fixed" teeth again. This isdone by placing implants or mini-implants into the
jaws to support your dentures. How many implantsyou receive is often dependant upon your budget. Ihave written many articles on Upgradeable Dentistrywhich is a concept that allows patients to placeimplants before bone loss occurs. They can thencontinue to add implants over time as their budgetsallow until they have enough support to have apermanent bridge or "fixed teeth." Placing implants as
soon as teeth are lost helps prevent more costly bonegrafts later on. There are ways of making Snap-On-Dentures with a few implants so that the implants canhave attachments that the denture clips to. Thisprevents slipping of the teeth and eliminates the needfor denture adhesive which can be quite annoying toclean out each day. If enough implants can be affordedthen a bar can be made to snap the denture on to andthis allows the implants to be splinted and increasestheir strength.
If we have 6 implants in the upper arch (or more)and at least 5 implants in the lower arch then a hybrid

Mount Mary University has launched apost-professional Occupational TherapyDoctorate (OTD) program for practicingoccupational therapists who have alreadyearned a masters degree in occupationaltherapy. The 31-credit online program willequip candidates with advanced practiceand leadership competencies that canmeet the demand for changing deliverymodels for OT services. Emphasizinggerontology, physical rehabilitation, pedi-atrics and mental health, the program alsoprepares OT professionals for advance-ment in education and healthcare leader-ship positions.
The OTD program requires practice-based research and a culminating portfo-lio specifically designed to meet rigorouscriteria for American Occupational
Therapy Association (AOTA) BoardCertification. AOTA Board Certificationgives OT professionals a competitive edgein the marketplace. With over 113,200licensed occupational therapists in thecountry today, only 158 are board certi-fied in specialty practice areas.
According to President EileenSchwalbach, Ph.D., the creation of thedoctorate in occupational therapy is a nat-ural expansion of the universitys B.S. andM.S. programs which have to date edu-cated over 2,000 occupational therapyproviders. Mount Mary has been educat-ing occupational therapists for 73 years,Schwalbach stated. Our new doctorateprogram is another indication of our com-mitment to meeting the needs of a chang-ing health care environment.
Froedtert Hospital President CathyBuck affirms that the need for highly skilledoccupational therapists is outstrippingdemand as our population ages, particu-larly those who can help individuals andtheir caregivers with Alzheimers and otherforms of dementia, as well as modify caresettings that foster aging in place.Doctoral education will allow practition-ers to concentrate on specific clinic spe-cialties, focus on wellness and even part-ner with primary care providers, statedBuck. As healthcare strives to offer moreaffordable and effective models of care, the occupational therapy doctorate willsupport the ever changing needs of theindustry.
Mount Marys OTD program is opento men and women nationwide. The part-
