HOUSTON – Valen-tine’s Day is a specialday meant to showthose you love mostthat you care aboutthem, but for somethis day could triggerfeelings of grief be-cause their loved onehas passed away. One Baylor College of

Medicine expert discusseshow one might cope withthese feelings.“Valentine’s Day is one of

the days that might bestressful for some people ifthey have lost someonespecial to them.

There might be memo-ries that reemerge that canmake someone sad,” saidDr. Jin Han, assistant pro-fessor in the MenningerDepartment of Psychiatryand Behavioral SciencesatBaylor. “There are some ways to

cope with this to feel betterthough.”Han explained that how

someone copes is an indi-vidual process, but the ten-dency of some people toisolate themselves whenthey feel sad is generallynot helpful.“Isolation can actually

lead to feeling more de-pressed or it can lead to

unnecessary thinking be-cause you are alone withyour own thoughts,” Hansaid.Making plans to be

around family members orfriends on a day like Valen-tine’s Day when you mightfeel sad is a good way tocope, he said, and some

people may even find ithelpful to attend a group orindividual therapy session. “It can be really helpful to

talk about your memoriesof your loved one and toshare what you are feel-ing,” he said. “Some people even go

the cemetery to pay theirrespects. “Doing so actually helps

them feel better becausethey feel that it’s a way tolet their loved one knowthat they haven’t forgottenabout them.” Han cautioned that for

other people this might ac-tually be more stressful soit’s important that the per-son cope in a different wayif this is not helpful. There are ways that fam-

ily members and friendscan step up and help thegrieving person as well, he

said. “If you are surrounded

by wonderful people whoare very sensitive to yourfeelings, then they will ac-tually be proactive and tryto make sure they dosomething to help out,”Han said. Simply inviting someone

to go to lunch is a greatway to show that you care,he said. Even calling or video

chatting with the personcan show that you supportthem. “Overall, the key is to

avoid isolation. It is soeasy to fall into that trap, especially when you are inthat emotional state, butit’s not going to be helpful. You don’t need to walkthrough the day alone,”Han said.

Copingwith loss on Valentine’sDay

“Isolation can actually lead to feelingmore depressed or it can lead to unnec-essary thinking because you are alonewith your own thoughts...”—Dr. Jin Han, assistant professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Be-

havioral Sciencesat Baylor.
