Injury Recovery Should Include Prescriptions PlusNatural Medicines

Suffer an injury – a twisted knee, a turnedankle – and you know what’s likely to comenext: swelling and reddening of the damagedarea.

Inflammation is one of the body’s most common reactions to thestress of an injury, and while modern science has created many im-portant drugs to help the body heal, some health professionals sayholistic medicines should also be part of the prescription.

Here’s why: An emphasis on alternatives to prescription drugs couldreduce other issues, says Dr. Sanda Moldovan, a periodontist and nu-tritionist and author of HEAL UP!: 7 Ways To Faster Healing And Op-timum Health (www.beverlyhillsdentalhealth.com).

The most frequently prescribed medications worldwide are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, known as NSAIDs, and they havebeen linked to a higher increase in cardiovascular problems, heart at-tacks and strokes. In the United States alone, more than 70 millionprescriptions are written for these drugs every year.

“Prescription medications have their place, but discovering andusing natural alternatives prevents potential narcotics abuse andlessens side effects,” Moldovan says. “Dr. Mother Nature is the bestprescriber for healing and optimum wellness.”

While a typical physician’s recommendations will include things tonot eat or drink that will be helpful in making sure there is no specificreaction, making sure the entire body is in optimum health to fight aninfection will typically shorten the recovery period, she says.

“Nutritional interventions can assist the body’s capacity to fight anytype of infection,” Moldovan says.

She says there are many little known therapies that can help a per-son heal including IV nutrition, homeopathics, herbs, teas,oxygen/ozone, and even light and energy devices. A few of those in-clude:

Micro-current and low level laser therapy - speed up healing byusing magnetic fields and laser energy

Mind-Body Synchronization - Guided Meditation and relaxationtechniques have been proven as ways to shorten the length of timefor injury rehabilitation.

Oxygen / ozone Therapy - Oxygen is all around us yet we under-estimate its importance. The trend of hyperbaric chambers in privatehomes is evidence that more people are taking it seriously. Ozonetherapy also aids in immune function and detoxification.

Plants, herbs and teas - Current research has proven the efficacyof ancient plant medicines, which are now in better formulations andmore purified for a better therapeutic effect.

Patients should remember that the entire body is impacted by aninjury even though the injury itself may be localized, Moldovan says.By treating the entire body wholistically, she says, it will assist thebody in recovering faster.

Cousins Subs® and the Mil-waukee Bucks work to BlockOut Hunger in Milwaukee with adonation 2,788 pounds of foodto support pantries statewide.

Wrapping up a third year ofBlock Out Hunger, this Wiscon-sin-based duo joined forces withHunger Task Force to post upagainst food insecurity through-out the state—both on and offthe court.

On the court, Cousins honoredthe Bucks’ 50th anniversary, bydonating $50 to Hunger TaskForce for every blocked shot theBucks had throughout theteam’s regular season—a totalthat amounts to 443 blocks anda $22,150 donation.

Off the court, throughoutMarch Cousins’ locations col-lected 2,788 pounds of healthynonperishable food items in the

Milwaukee area, and an overalltotal of 4,092 pounds across thestate.

Each dollar raised and poundof food collected directly sup-ports emergency food suppliesat Hunger Task Force and its af-filiated pantries statewide, in-cluding 25 throughoutMilwaukee.

“Hunger is an issue that everycommunity faces and one that

we can Block Out by coming to-gether and supporting our neigh-bors in need,” said JustinMcCoy, vice president of mar-keting at Cousins Subs.

“We are grateful for the goodwill of our partners the Milwau-kee Bucks and Hunger TaskForce and inspired by the com-passion shown by all who joinedus in the fight against hunger.Together, we will make it betterfor those in our local communi-ties.” Since the campaign’s in-ception in 2016, Cousins and theMilwaukee Bucks raised a totalof $51,815 for Hunger TaskForce, and the local sub shop’sWisconsin restaurants collected14,441 pounds of food, whichstayed directly in those commu-nities. “Once again, we’ve seenthe benefits of partnering withCousins and Hunger Task Forceto help Block Out Hunger in Wis-consin,” said Matt Pazaras, sen-ior vice president of businessdevelopment and strategy forthe Bucks.

“We’re thrilled with the resultsof this year’s campaign, andthanks to Cousins and HungerTask Force, we’re able to makea real difference in the commu-nity in a very important area.”

Cousins and the Bucks choseHunger Task Force as the bene-ficiary of the Block Out Hungercampaign because it’s Milwau-kee’s only Free & Local foodbank, is Wisconsin’s leadinganti-hunger organization andhas a strong network of partner-ing pantries.

The nonprofit collects nearly10 million pounds of food a yearand delivers it to 76 foodpantries, soup kitchens andhomeless shelters, which com-bined, serve more than 50,000people each month.

“The Block Out Hunger cam-paign is distinctive because of itsreach statewide – helping makea difference for hungry familiesin communities throughout Wis-consin,” said Sherrie Tussler, ex-ecutive director of Hunger TaskForce. “After our third consecu-tive year, we’re excited to seethat the campaign continues togrow, and we thank CousinsSubs and the Milwaukee Bucksfor their dedication and supportto raise awareness abouthunger in a huge way!”

With 50,000 meals beingserved at Milwaukee Countysoup kitchens and shelters eachmonth, and 16 percent of Wis-consin households with childrenexperiencing food hardship, campaigns such as Block OutHunger are imperative in thefight against hunger in our localcommunities.

On average, there are nearly18,000 monthly household visitsto Hunger Task Force-affiliatedfood pantries and 43,645monthly meals served at HungerTask Force-affiliated meal sites.

James Shaw Jr. is beingcelebrated like the hero he isand appeared on “The EllenShow” to talk about his WaffleHouse takedown of a gun-man and met basketball

player Dwyane Wade—sinceShaw is one of his biggestfans.

But it was Dwyane Wadewho was inspired by Shaw’spresence.

“I know you don’t want to becalled a hero, but I look at youas an American hero,” theNBA player told Shaw.

“When I sit down with mykids and I sit down and talk to

them about role models andwho I want them to look up to,I tell them to go look upJames Shaw Jr.,” Wade said.

Shaw was moved byDwyane Wade’s kind wordsand overwhelmed by all thelove he’s received since tak-ing matters into his ownhands and grabbing a gunfrom a shooter at a Ten-nessee Waffle House.

Many say Shaw’s heroismsaved lives, but he’s too hum-ble to admit that.

Ellen DeGeneres walkedShaw through those horrify-ing moments on her show.

“You see him reloading andyou think, that’s my chance togo at him?” said Ellen

“Yes, I had a voice in myhead that said ‘do it now, do itnow,'” Shaw said.

“Wow, you’re a brave man,”said DeGeneres. “You’re a re-ally brave man.”

Since the ordeal, Shawraised more than $200,000for the four victims who werekilled.

But he was not forgotten.Being a victim himself, some-one else raised more than$200,000 on GoFundMe forShaw.

DeGeneres surprised Shawby giving him that GoFundMecheck on the spot and as aextra special gift she pre-sented Shaw with an addi-tional $20,000 from Shutterfly,an online photo service.

Wade said he couldn’t letDeGeneres one-up him andpresented the father of a four-year-old yet another $20,000.

Gabrielle Union tweeted outa pic with her husband Wadeand the humble hero.

“When they hug… tears,”she wrote.
