Over 15 people have been shot in Mil- waukee over the last 24 hours. Since Feb- ruary of this year we have seen a 100% increase in homicides. In recent years, we have seen increasing levels of gun violence in the fall months. We cannot rely on cold weather to slow this deadly epidemic. In 2020 our 414 LIFE team has seen a 54% increase in referrals of gun shot vic- tims to the program though our partnership with Froedtert Hospital. The team has conducted over 53 high- risk mediations this year which, could have resulted in a shooting or homicide. This level of gun violence requires all of us to do more to de-escalate tensions and resolve conflicts and disagreements without resorting to gun violence. In 2015, Milwaukee saw a 70% increase in homicides. Since that time, we expanded our efforts to address violence as a public health issue and increased investments in community based solutions identified in the Blueprint for Peace. The uptick in violence in 2020 comes after a steady 4-year decline in non-fatal shoot- ings and homicides from 2016-2019. In- creased access to firearms paired with the stress, tension, and despair caused by Covid 19 is having an impact on violence in cities across the country. This year we have seen a sharp increase in suicides and mass shooting incidents that began with the Molson Coors shooting. We must treat every single shooting as a state of emergency and act with the ur- gency it deserves. Milwaukee Business RestartProgram 2.0 Now Underway

The City of Milwaukee has launched a secondround of the Milwaukee Business Restart Pro-gram -- using federal relief funds to assist estab-lished city businesses as they move to recoverfrom setbacks related to the COVID-19 pan-demic.

The program will have up to $10 million available to busi-nesses as they strive to adapt and operate during difficulttimes, Alderman Khalif J. Rainey said.

“It’s well documented how small businesses have been hitextremely hard by the COVID-19 pandemic,” AldermanRainey said. “

The Restart program will help businesses survive as wecontinue to do what we can to reduce the spread of the virusand to keep Milwaukee residents safe.”

New details of the program are posted on the www.city.Mil-waukee.gov/restart website. Applications are being accepteduntil October 8, 2020.

Businesses that previously re-ceived Restart grants are in-vited to apply again, but nobusiness can receive a com-bined total of more than$25,000.

In addition to grants for per-sonal protective equipment,restocking perishable inven-tory, and physical improve-ments to reduce COVID-19spread, grantees can usemoney from this round ofRestart for some rent and util-

ity payments and winterizingoutdoor spaces.

In this round of the Restartprogram, several new cate-gories of businesses canapply including home-basedbusinesses, food trucks, li-censed day cares and state li-censed group homes.

City government is workingcollaboratively with the Mil-waukee Economic Develop-ment Corp. on Restart 2.0.Additionally, the City has en-gaged the Latino Entrepre-

neurial Network, the Milwau-kee Urban League, and theWisconsin Women’s BusinessInitiative Corporation to assistsmall businesses in preparingfor the online application. The

partnership aims to make theonline application more acces-sible to businesses that havetechnological needs.
