HEALTH AND HEALTH RELATED SERVICES

Editor’s Note: In last week’s anniversary special edition of theMilwaukee Community Journal, we ran the profile of one of thehonorees, Dr. LaRoyce F. Chambers, under the Health and HealthRelated Services category. We inadvertently ran his profile with-out his photo. We are rerunning in the Weekend Edition the pro-file with his photo.

Dr. LaRoyceF. Chambers

A glimpse into Dr. LaRoyce Chambers’childhood provides a foreshadowing of hiscareer. By the age of five, he had alreadyearned the nickname of “Doc”. Wheneverhis childhood friends suffered scrapes andbruises or were in accidents, they came tohim for first aid.

“Throughout the neighborhood, everyoneknew that I wanted to become a doctor, sothey supported and affirmed my vision” hesaid.

Dr. Chambers was raised in Detroit’sinner city. His mother was also raised in De-troit and graduated from the prestigiousCass Technical High School at the age of 16 where he also graduated. At the age of 19 shemet Dr. Chambers’ dad—who grew up on a farm in Fulton Kentucky and migrated to Detroitfor work—and they later married.

“My parents were entrepreneurs who purchased a small grocery store in the neighbor-hood. During the day, my mother ran the store. After getting off work from the Ford MotorCompany, my father would work in the store in the evening until closing. I learned mystrong work ethic from observing them,” he said.

After high school, Dr. Chambers worked his way through college at Wayne State Univer-sity. He earned his medical degree at the University of Michigan where he met his lovelywife, Minnie, who was an exchange student from Tuskegee University. He completed hismedical training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University and is board cer-tified.

“My arrival in Milwaukee was kind of a ‘journey around the lake’,” he said. “I completedmy undergraduate work in Detroit, attended the University of Michigan, did my residencyat Northwestern University and, during that time got married. We frequently came to Wis-consin during the summer—visiting places like Lake Geneva. We thought Milwaukee was avery safe, clean city.

During this time, many doctors went into solo practice after residency. However, Dr.Chambers looked at that option and made the unusual decision to join a medical groupwith two other doctors—both of whom were Caucasian.

lance piece -- on pioneering Black female aldermanVel Phillips -- was published in the October 1958issue of Sepia Magazine, Mattiebelle was the first tocall and offer congratulations. In the turbulent 1960s, Mattiebelle’s thoughtful in-

fluence encouraged me, George Sanders, Jay An-derson, Reuben Harpole -- and her grandson, KennyBedford -- to make The Milwaukee Star one of Amer-ica’s best Black weekly newspapers.Mattiebelle knew everyone in town and loved to

print their names. She’d attend a gathering and listeveryone there in her legendary “Party Line” columnfor weeklies such as The Milwaukee Courier, Starand Defender, among others. She rarely missed aparty. She also contributed to Ebony and Jet. -- keep-ing them up to date on Black Milwaukee.Over the years, whenever Mattiebelle and I talked,

she’d call me “my guy.” And she loved to do so inpublic, including from the stage of the Varsity Theatreon June 20, 1992. The occasion was a nostalgic “Fa-ther’s Day Eve” concert by the legendary Spaniels,of “Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight” fame, which I

retuned from New York to arrange. This is how Mattiebelle previewed the affair in

“Party Line” in The Courier: “The show will be em-ceed by Richard G. Carter, of Milwaukee, who isworking on an authorized biography of the Spaniels.Among the special guests will be Mannie Mauldin Jr.,and yours truly, who gave Carter his start in the newsbusiness.”The event also recognized the lifelong contribu-

tions of Mattiebelle and the late, great Maudlin. Ahighlight was presentation by the distinguished JohnGivens to lead singer James “Pookie” Hudson, of aCounty Executive plaque proclaiming June 20 as“Spaniels Day” in Milwaukee. As all of us stood side-by-side, Mattiebelle reached up, gave me a hug andgleefully proclaimed to the audience that “Dickie isstill my guy.”I was truly saddened when Sanders e-mailed me

in New York about Mattiebelle’s death -- on Feb. 17,2005 -- at 102. Among our memories, I recalled heras my invited guest on WNOV radio’s “Carter-McGeeReport” in 1994. Neighbors at Northridge Lakes, Idrove her to the station and she bent my ear with the

Over the years, Dr. Chambers has seen an increase in the number of pa-tients needing mental health care in Milwaukee’s central city community.

"In my practice, I always make time to talk with each of my patients sothat I can truly understand their lifestyle and individual needs," Dr. Cham-bers says. "In doing this, I am confident I can provide the very best carepossible.”

“One of the biggest challenges in the area of healthcare today is the psy-chological health of Milwaukee’s central city population. When I first came

to Milwaukee, I did not see many people with psychiatric problems; overthe last 40 years that has changed. There are very few mental healthproviders in this area, so people with mental health issues are having a dif-ficult time accessing the services they need.

Dr. Chambers’ wife, Dr. Minnie Chambers is an educator. She graduatedfrom Tuskegee University as an English teacher. Once they were marriedand had children, she was willing to give up her career to stay at home toraise their two successful children.

“My wife accomplished her goal of using her education to raise our two

sons. That was a huge help to me as well as a great contribution to society. She returned to school after our sons left home for college and earned herdoctorate degree from Cardinal Stritch University,” Dr. Chambers saidproudly.

In the end, Dr. Chambers said that he hopes people will remember himas a kind, humble, contributing member of the Milwaukee community, es-pecially in the area of healthcare. He looks at everyone as being important, because everyone is important to him.

latest gossip there and back. One of the last times Mattiebelle personally effected my

life was her sparkling coverage in The Courier of a surprise

87th birthday party for my father on Feb. 1, 1998, at theServite Woods Clubhouse. Yet, when I saw the 100th birth-day tribute she received in Jet Magazine in 2002, it was likeour old days together. She was that kind of great lady.So a happy 40th anniversary to the Community Journal -

- the latest, and one of the best, in a long line of Milwau-kee’s Black weekly newspapers. Here’s hoping you live along, rewarding life -- just as did the late, great MattiebelleWoods.Milwaukee native Richard G. Carter is a freelance
