Betty Brinn Museum ExpandsSTEAM Education in AreaSchools as a Designated Making SpacesHub The Betty Brinn Museum wasselected as one of fifteen organi-zations in the country to partici-pate as a designated MakingSpaces Hub, an innovative pro-gram partnership betweenGoogle, Maker Ed and the Chil-dren’s Museum of Pittsburgh thatsupports maker-centered learn-ing in schools and STEAM (sci-ence, technology, engineering, art and math) education. The Betty Brinn Museum joins other muse-

ums, libraries, school districts and communityorganizations that were chosen to participate asa Making Spaces regional hub. Throughout the nation, the hub institutions

partner with schools in their area to help jump-start and sustain maker education in class-rooms through crowdfunding, professionaldevelopment and community engagement.

The Museum is pleased to announce partner-ships with the following schools as a part of theMaking Spaces Hub program: Lloyd BarbeeMontessori School, Bayside Middle School,Messmer St. Mary, Messmer St. Rose, ClaraMohammed School Inc., Pewaukee Lake Ele-mentary School and Stormonth ElementarySchool. The Museum’s maker educators work out of

the organization’s new off-site makerspace inBay View, Brinn Labs, to help guide school ed-ucators, curriculum developers, administratorsand parents in launching crowdfunding cam-paigns to raise funds for a designated schoolmakerspace, and provide guidance to help ed-ucators and facilitators hone their approach toimplementing project-based learning. The program also provides access to infor-

mation for short-term activities as well as open-ended, long-term projects, curriculum samples, examples of facilitation methods and practices, and the pedagogies and values aligned withmaking.“Schools are increasingly interested in maker

education for all grade levels and in creatingmakerspaces, but many do not have the re-sources, training and support they need to getstarted,” said Fern Shupeck, executive director,Betty Brinn Museum. “We are thrilled to combine the Museum's ex-

perience and accomplishments in the MakerMovement with the knowledge and support theMaking Spaces Hub program offers, and tobegin sharing this model with local educators.”The Museum also presents Teacher Studio,

a free, professional development event series, held at the Brinn Labs location, that provides anintroduction to resources, training and activitiesfor K-12 educators looking to implement mak-ing, makerspaces and STEAM learning. In 2018, the Museum will introduce opportu-

nities for schools, libraries, community organi-zations and other educational institutions tosecure consulting services for STEAM educa-tion programming, standards-based lesson plandevelopment, and the creation and growth ofmakerspaces.

High School Students AcrossNation March forGun ControlTens of thousands of high school students

across America were marked with an unexcusedabsence Wednesday, but everyone knew wherethey were. In the Washington area, high schoolstudents from DC. Public Schools and from public schools in Mary-

land marched to the Capitol and then to the WhiteHouse to demand Congress and the president in-stitute gun control legislation that will keep thesafe. The march was organized by students from

Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville,Md., and Bethesda-Chevy Chase in MontgomeryCounty, Md., in response to the recent shooting inParkland, Fla. It was exactly one week ago Wednesday that 19-

year-olf Nikolas Cruz opened fire at StonemanDouglas High School, killing 17 students andwounding dozens more. Cruz, who had been ex-pelled from the school, was charged with 17 ac-counts of murder of his classmates, teachers andother school officials. The shooting was the 18th school shooting in the

first two months of this year. Student survivors atthe school have launched a nationwide effort tofocus attention on gun control in the wake of theshooting. Other student demonstrations were re-ported in Illinois, Florida and Texas.—AMIYAHKING / Howard University News Service
