VIEW

This week, we will be looking at Summer

Term - Week 4 (w/c 11th May)

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-

4/

We will be sending out the worksheets with the

parentmail as whiterose said they would not be

adding them to the site.

Also check out the BBC bitesize lesson for more

content or resources.

Daily reading for at

least 15 minutes

per day.

This can be online,

any books or

reading materials.

We are monitoring

accelerated

reader each week

and checking who

has done some

quizzes.

We know some of

your books might

not be on

accelerated

reader so make

sure you keep a

log of the books

you have finished.

Unfortunately, we

cannot add them

onto accelerated

reader at this time.

This week, our activities are all based around this picture.

We have attached some resources to help you this week. The

activities below are our suggested activities however, if the

children are struggling or reluctant to write, ask your child to

write for 15-20 minutes per day about the picture- this can be

a letter, a poem, a diary entry - anything! It is just important

that children write something each day.

MON Day 1 – Lesson One – Multiplying and dividing

problem solving (Correspondence problems)

On question 1b, think about how many combinations

there are altogether. How many bread types are

there? How many fillings are there? What calculation

has been done to get this total amount?

Use this information to help you with question 2, 3 and

4.

On question 5, you can still use a quick multiplication

to solve the problem.

Sports x arts and crafts x outward bound =

Use this information to help answer question 6.

Daily reading for at

least 15 minutes

per day.

This can be online,

any books or

reading materials.

We are monitoring

accelerated

reader each week

and checking who

has done some

quizzes.

Activity 1 – Gathering ideas

This week, you will be writing a fact-file about orang-utans so

today, you need to do some research and make some notes

to help you with this.

Read through the orang-utan fact sheet page:

(attached as a resource) or do your own research into orang-

utans. National Geographic for Kids also has some good

information on their website.

Make some notes about the following main areas: -description/key facts -habitat -life cycle -diet -behaviour/daily life -problems facing orang-utans.

You can make your notes in whatever form you like but

remember not to copy word for word.

TUES Day 2 – Lesson Two – Perimeter of a rectangle.

When calculating perimeter of shapes, mark off the

sides as you add them up to stop you repeating the

same sides.

Daily reading for at

least 15 minutes

per day.

This can be online,

any books or

reading materials.

We are monitoring

accelerated

reader each week

and checking who

has done some

quizzes.

Activity 2 – Using parentheses

See if you can add some additional detail to these sentences

using parentheses.

The orang-utan sheltered under the leaf. Rainforests experience heavy rain almost every day. Thunderstorms occur frequently in the rainforest. Orang-utans eat a large amount of fruit. Many animals are found within the canopy layer of the rainforest.

Note: Parentheses are used to enclose incidental or extra information, such as a passing comment, a minor example or

Page 3: Milton Mount Home Learning Weekly sheet to go home Date

Think very carefully with question 5. Label all the sides

and check they add up to 24cm. Remember,

opposite sides need to be the same length.

addition, or a brief explanation. The writer may choose to put additional information within brackets, dashes or commas. e.g. The garden fence, which had been badly damaged in a storm, creaked loudly in the wind. Blue whales (the largest mammal in the world) can reach up to 98 feet long.

WEDS Day 3 – Lesson Three – Perimeter or rectilinear

shapes. Rectilinear shape = a shape made up with straight

lines.

On question 4, how can you use the labelled sides to

find the lengths of the unknown sides? Use the

opposite sides to find some clues.

On question 7, label the information around the

picture before you find the perimeter.

Daily reading for at

least 15 minutes

per day.

This can be online,

any books or

reading materials.

We are monitoring

accelerated

reader each week

and checking who

has done some

quizzes.

Activity 3 – Using connecting adverbs to extend and link

sentences

however nevertheless for example

as a consequence

in the beginning

particularly especially therefore for this reason

initially

Have a look at the adverbials in this table. Which adverbial is

the most suitable to fill the gaps in these sentences?

a) Many primates are sociable creatures that live in

groups ________ most orang-utans prefer to live on their

own.

b) Orang-utans spend most of their lives in the treetops

and _________ they have developed longer, stronger

arms than other species of ape.

Now have a go at writing 5 of your own sentences about

orang-utans using the adverbials above to connect your

points.

THURS Day 4 – Lesson Four – Counting squares.

Daily reading for at

least 15 minutes

per day.

Activity 4 – Writing a fact-file about orang-utans

Audience: people interested in animals and the environment

Purpose: to present information clearly

Page 4: Milton Mount Home Learning Weekly sheet to go home Date

This lesson introduces area. Area is the space inside a

shape.

This can be online,

any books or

reading materials.

We are monitoring

accelerated

reader each week

and checking who

has done some

quizzes.

Today, we would like you to create your own fact file using

the notes that you made on day 1. This will be your first draft

and tomorrow, you will edit and present it. You can do this

however you like but think carefully about the features that

you will need to include and how to organise your work

clearly for your reader. It needs to be written in your own

words rather than copied directly from the information. Good

luck!

Features to think about:

-Title and subheadings

-Paragraphs (including an introduction)

-Written in the 3rd person (it and they, not I or you)

-Present tense (lives and eats, rather than lived and ate)

-Fact boxes (optional)

-Pictures/diagrams with captions (optional)

Think carefully about the audience, purpose and tone of your

writing – it should not be too chatty or informal. If you would

like to include some more chatty elements, think carefully

about how to do this. An additional ‘fun fact’ section or a

short quiz, perhaps?

FRI Day 5 – Lesson 5 maths challenge White rose will add a document for the set challenges

similar to last week. See how many you can do.

The answers will be uploaded later on.

Why not get the whole family involved?

Daily reading for at

least 15 minutes

per day.

This can be online,

any books or

reading materials.

We are monitoring

accelerated

reader each week

and checking who

Activity 5 – Editing and presenting your work.

Editing

It is often good to come back to something you have written

the following day. That way, it is easier to see the mistakes you

have made and how it can be improved. Now, check your

writing from yesterday for:

*All sentences need to be complete and make sense. Check

for run-on sentences (too-long sentences that need to be split

with a full stop into 2 sentences)

Page 5: Milton Mount Home Learning Weekly sheet to go home Date

has done some

quizzes.

*Punctuation. Have you used capitals, full stops and commas

in the right place?

*Spelling. Use a dictionary to check any words you are unsure

about.

Presenting

Now it is time to publish or present your work. You could do

this on the computer, as a neat piece of writing or even turn it

into a video presentation! It is up to you.

Don’t forget to upload your finished piece onto Class Dojo!

Level Two Home Learning You can choose from any of these additional activities!

Activity 1 - PE

Help us win the ‘Virtual’ Sussex School Games Some of you might already know about this! Although we cannot compete in the real Sussex School Games, we would love to do as well as possible in the ‘virtual’ games. The attached document explains what you need to do – every week there will be a new sport to master and score points for and every Friday you add your score for the school. All you need to do is set up an account, attach it to our school and get competing! Use the videos and other information on the website to help. Let’s see if we can be champions of Sussex! This challenge is open to parents and carers too! (See document – Specsavers Virtual Games – Milton Mount) For those of you also logging PE activities on to ‘Get Set Tokyo’, please keep this up and help earn prizes and equipment for our school.

Activity 2 – Spelling

Here are your speed spellings for this week. How many of the activities we do in class can you use (quiz, quiz, trade – roll the dice – rainbow writing - find the tricky bit – silly sentences – speed writing)? Group A – stomach, sufficient, suggest, symbol, system. Group B – remember, sentence, separate special, straight. Group C – after, path, many, water, money Spelling frame is a free website. You don’t need to create a login but if you click on the spelling pattern you want to practise, click play and then the ‘spelling tiles’ section, you can play some activities for free. https://spellingframe.co.uk/

Activity 3 - Science

How do you inflate a balloon without touching it? Find out by having a go at his week's science investigation into gases. Make sure you read the instructions on the sheet below carefully. Remember to post a picture of your experiment on our class dojo. Good luck! Challenge: If you wanted to complete an extra challenge, you could write an account of your experiment using passive voice - Instead of writing, ' I stretched a balloon over the top of a bottle,' you write: 'A balloon was stretched over the top of a bottle’ and instead of ‘I poured some vinegar into the bottle’ you write: ‘Some vinegar was poured into the bottle.’ In other words, you don’t use the words I, he, she, it, we or they.

Activity 4 – Reading comprehension

Read the Florence Nightingale comic strip below then answer these questions.

Activity 5 – DT

Design and make a lamp in celebration of International Nurses’ Day and to mark the

Activity 6 – Art

Become an art critic for the day then create your own artwork

Page 7: Milton Mount Home Learning Weekly sheet to go home Date

You may need a dictionary. You many also need to use the PEE technique - make your point, give evidence from the text and explain your answer.

1. What was Florence Nightingale’s

nickname and why was she called that?

2. What were conditions like in Crimean

hospitals in 1854? List 3 things.

3. What does ‘rife’ mean?

4. How do you know that injured soldiers

did not want to be taken to hospital?

5. Which word tells you that doctors at the

hospital in Turkey were very busy when

Florence first arrived?

6. List 3 things that Florence and her team

did when they arrived at the Turkey

hospital.

7. Why was Mary Seacole brave?

8. How do you know Mary Seacole was

poor?

9. How do you know that Florence became

an author after the Crimean War?

10. What did Florence do in 1860?

11. How did Florence change attitudes to

women and nurses?

12. Do you think everyone approved of

Florence’s work? Explain.

13. Florence was born exactly 200 years ago.

Do you think we should still be grateful

to her today?

14. Do you think that Mary Seacole should

be just as well-known as Florence?

Explain.

200th anniversary of Florence Nightingales’ birth on May 12th. Since 1965, the International Council of Nurses, a federation of more than 130 national nurses’ associations, has celebrated International Nurses’ Day on May 12th, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. Every year on this day, a special service is held in Westminster Abbey, London. During the service, a symbolic lamp is taken from the Nurses' Chapel in the Abbey and handed from one nurse to another, then to the Dean, who places it on the High Altar. This signifies the passing of knowledge from one nurse to another and is also a nod to Florence Nightingale's nickname, "The Lady with the Lamp". This ceremony will not be taking place this year but that needn’t stop you from designing and making your own lamp to commemorate the occasion. Annotate your plan explaining your design choices and materials. You could add facts about Florence Nightingale and make a stand to go with your lamp. Some ideas are shown below (guess which lamp is the one actually used) but you are welcome to come up with your own. Try to use recycled materials and post a picture of your design plan and finished lamp to class dojo! You’ll find some lamp ideas below. Good luck!

Go on a virtual tour of old masters and contemporary art at the British Museum. Here is the link you will need: https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/galleries/prints-and-drawings-virtual-gallery Choose one piece of art work that strikes you most and write a paragraph explaining why you have chosen it (why does it appeal to you, what does it make you think of, how does it make you feel, what materials are used etc). Then create your own version of one of the pieces you have seen using whatever materials you have at home. You could use pencils, biros, felt tips, crayons, paint, fabric, clothes, newspaper, leaves, it really doesn’t matter. (Mrs Swinson wants to have a go at creating her own version of Meander!) Remember to take a picture of your work and post it to your portfolio on Class Dojo!

Specsavers ‘Virtual’ Sussex School Games 2020

As a school we are taking part in the ‘Virtual’ Games this year. Weekly challenges will be posted for children to take part in competing against other schools in the county. Here is the first video explaining about the challenges: Video Challenges How Does It Work? Every week throughout the summer term, a different sport will take place, made up of four personal sporting challenges which can be completed from home; in the living room, kitchen or garden, or at school. Scores for each challenge will be submitted online, and will contribute towards the school’s average score, so it doesn’t matter whether you are a big school or small school. Medals will be awarded to the best scoring schools. There will also be an Active Adults category with trophies up for grabs, so parents, teachers and carers can get involved and represent the school too. Get Involved It all kicks off at 9.15am on Monday 27 April with the ‘Virtual’ Opening Ceremony on social media, and the launch of the first sport. Please sign up so that you can record your child/ren’s results using this link: Sign Up
