The contemporary practice of architecture is undergoing an accelerated process of globalization. To take advantage of the great business

opportunities offered by international markets, as well as theoretical knowledge and practical experience, companies in the sector need architects

with the skills to work in complex interdisciplinary teams and achieve common success.

The Tri-Continental Master’s Degree in Advanced Architectural Design offered by Universidad Europea de Madrid’s School of Architecture aims to

meet this demand through joint academic- professional periods in three world-class universities, located on different continents. During the Master’s

program, students will carry out specific assignments that are coordinated in each host city:

SPAIN: Universidad Europea de Madrid. School of Architecture, Madrid.

THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

CHINA: Tongji University Architectural Design and Research Institute, Shanghai.

PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIP

USA: NewSchool of Architecture and Design, San Diego.

MASTER´S GRADUATION PROJECT

003

The Master’s program offers students a platform that combines in

one year the knowledge, experience, and the skills of an

internationally- oriented architect, which a traditional training in

architecture cannot offer. Upon completion of the Master’s program,

the extensive exposure of students to intercultural contexts and the

networks of personal contacts established, will facilitate their access

to leading positions in any international public or private engineering

or architectural firm or studio.

At present, there is no graduate program in Spain with a scope

equaling that of the Tri-Continental Master’s Degree in Advanced

Architectural Design by Universidad Europea de Madrid’s School of

Architecture. The program is designed, developed, and taught by

leading professionals and specialists with real market experience in

international architectural projects.

FOUNDATIONS OF ARCHITECTURAL

DESIGN

Theory-based sessions are structured in complementary workshops

in which students learn how to integrate the technological, artistic

and contextual parameters that embody the complexity of

architectural and urban themes. Learning is structured around a

series of case studies of recognized quality and the assignment of

related architectural design projects.

MD01 - MATTER AND GEOMETRY

008

WHAT IS THE OBJECTIVE?

The project consists of creating a

double sized apple considering what

is the most important thing that

makes it an apple.

WHAT MAKES AN APPLE AN

APPLE?

To me it's the skin, if you don't see

the skin you might not think it's an

apple at all.

SUPER SIZED APPLE?

A double sized apple must have

thicker skin so it would protect the hit

when it hits the ground and form

protection against animals that want

to eat it..

ANY REFERENCES?

Using Fibonacci´s sequence, I

figured that most things in nature

grow un spirals (flowers, shells, etc).

INTENTIONS?

Using a 3D model of a spiraled

sphere I can assume how an

apple is growing to be double

sized.

WHAT NOW?

Carving a regular apple in a

spiral shape I could now

measure so I can make a

model.

NEW DISCOVERIES?

After carving the apple, I noticed that

the spiral can be arranged the same

way if its part of a whole or hollow,

so using this theory I can carry on.

FINAL PRODUCT?

In the end I formed a big

spherical spiral with a center

holding it together (which

represents the heart of the

apple).

.

MD02 - GROUPING

012

WHAT IS GROUPING?

Grouping can be many things, but

the most important one is the

planned arrangement of things into a

group.

HOW CAN IT BE APPLIED?

There are many applications, in this

case I am going to use a reference

of Japanese art, designers

Francesca Rogers and Daniele

Gualeni Design Studio called "light

form".

USE OF GEOMETRY?

Geometry is a fundamental tool for

everybody, so I'm going to use the

most basic shape of all, the square.

BASIC GEOMETRY?

No, with a few tweaks I'm going to

change the square into 5 different

pieces, and all that pieces have to be

able connect with each other.

WHAT IS THE RULE OF

MODIFICATION?

Simple, make a hole in the center of

the square and keep getting it bigger.

WHAT NOW?

Create a table cloth.

NO 3D?

With a few tweaks and turns you can

bend the pieces to create plates and

bowls, but the are only for decorating

and not for eating!

(image is only an example)

FINAL PRODUCT?

The final product is the model of the

table cloth, made out of a material

only for the concept, the real thing

needs to be in some kind of flexible

plastic, but hard enough for holding

the shape of the bowls and plates.

MD03 - HOW MANY TIMES?

014

OBJECTIVE?

To create a building that works

perfectly using 3 different buildings.

A museum, an auditorium and a

housing building.

REFERENCE?

There is no direct reference for this,

only a platypus, because it is

composed of 3 parts (reptile, birds

and mammals).

MUSEUM?

The Jewish museum in Berlin by

Daniel Libeskind, because it is a

unique building that has an unusual

shape for a museum and can be

arranged iv various ways.

AUDITORIUM?

The Jay Pritzker pavilion in Chicago

by Frank Gehry, because of its open

space and can mutate easily with its

surroundings.

HOUSING BUILDING?

The LOVFT building in Monterrey,

because of its height and use of

multiple staircases.

WHAT NOW?

Create the new building.

JOINTS?

DOES IT WORK?

SILVER ALIEN

Using the external staircase of the housing

building and one of the elevators I was able

to separate de Jewish museum into sections

and pile them under the same staircase, and

de auditorium sits at the bottom of the

Jewish museum using the emergency exit

as the entrance to the auditoriums rooms

and backstage.

Yes it does, because of the complexity of

the jewish museum that acts like a catalyst

that makes the platypus building look like it

was all done at the same time and not from

bits and pieces of different buildings, also

the museum and the auditorium have the

same facade material, which joins them

even more perfectly.

MD04 - ANALOGICALLY SMART CITIES

016

_ What is the ambient noise level on a street at rush hour?

_ How do shadows of trees change its position on a public square during a

journey?

_ What are the patterns and intensity of use and the circulatory flows on a

public space?

_ Which names are the neighbours inhabiting a determinate building?

_ What is the energy consumption level used to light an avenue for a year?

_ What is the level of CO2 emissions due to materials used to pave a

sidewalk?

As a matter of fact our increasing capacity to have access to a high level of

information in real time has modified our way to do some daily things, such as

the way in which we relate to each other or do the shopping.

Paradoxically there are many other questions concerning us daily but that are

still exclusively managed by specialized technicians, that becomes

particularly significant when we consider data and information associated to

management and design of public spaces in our cities.

Let’s imagine the way in which we would live and experience a urban space

where all users could openly visualize the diagram of shadows projected by

adjacent buildings, the distance between the facades of these buildings or the

origin of the paving stones used to pave it. Let’s also imagine that we can see

all this information and data physically drawn on the surfaces composing this

space and on the elements to which it refers.

Would there be a change on the way in which citizens use, perceive and

interpret a urban public square in which all these data have been made

visible?

MD05 - RETURNABLE

020

WHAT IS THERE TO DO?

We have too pick one dead space

inside the city.

WHAT IS A DEAD SPACE?

A dead space is something that is

supposed to be public space but it is

not used as one.

WHY A ROUNDABOUT?

Because its the biggest and most

common "dead" space inside cities,

and it can work as many things.

PROBLEMS OF A ROUNDABOUT?

- Hard to get to because of traffic all

around it.

- Not very pretty to look at.

- Only perceivable use is as green

space.

WHAT TO DO?

Make a mini water recycling plant

inside of a roundabout using the

waste water from the community

near it.

HOW?

Canalize the water from the

roundabouts surroundings so it can

reach it easily.

WHAT NOW?

Recycle the water.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE CLEAN

WATER?

It can help with the irrigation of plants

near the roundabout and/or for public

toilets.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The final product can be pumped into

irrigation systems or to a bigger

water tank for storage and the

government can take it anytime.

MD06 - URBAN SUSTAINABILITY

022

WHAT IS THERE TO DO?

Create a urban machine that helps

people use plazas and be more

conscious about how the plaza

works.

URBAN MACHINE?

A machine can create or destroy, in

this case we are making a machine

that does both things.

WHAT DO YOU CREATE?

This machine can create electricity,

and all goes to a battery so it can

light up the plaza at night.

WHAT DO YOU DESTROY?

By making an exercise machine, you

destroy fat and make it into

carbohydrates (energy) that help you

be more active.

So in a way you are also creating...

HOW?

Taking the design of an electric

motor or power generator and some

cable it is possible to create all of the

electricity you need.

WHAT EXERCISES CAN YOU DO?

Basically, anything that you can

imagine.

All of the exercises you see and do

at any gym are pushing or pulling,

and that is what you can do with this

machine.

HOW DOES IT MAKE THE USER

MORE CONSCIOUS ABOUT WHAT

HE/SHE IS DOING?

It marks how many watts you are

creating automatically, and when you

start to charge the battery that will

help power up the plaza at night.

EXTRAS?

As a bonus feature, you can also

charge your phone or connect to the

power source anything that you want

to, and it will work as long as you are

exercising with the machine.

And the best of all, its FREE power.

MD07 - ENERGY APPS

024

WHAT IS MAPPING?

Mapping term is also sometimes used

for geospatial data collection, but in

fact it is not mapping. In other words,

the acquisition of data with

(geographic) coordinates directly from

terrain or imagery does not mean

mapping but surveying.

HOW CAN IT BE APPLIED?

It can be applied in many ways, but

in this case we are going to map the

density of people that uses a public

plaza/park.

PLANNING

How can we measure different

densities of persons on a plaza?

We would have to go there and

check how many persons are in

which areas and for how long.

LOW DENSITY

These are the places of the plaza

that almost nobody uses.

MEDIUM DENSITY

These areas are most likely to be

used only for walking to another

place or area of the plaza.

HIGH DENSITY?

These areas are the most used in

the plaza.

LIGHTS and SHADOWS

These areas are the lighting of the

plaza and the shadows at critical

times (3:00pm).

WHERE TO INSTALL THE ENERGY

MACHINE?

Based on all of the parameters, we

can decide where the best place to

put our energy saving machine.

MD08 - HYBRIDS

026

BOOKSLIDE

WHAT IS A HYBRID?

Anything that is composed by 2 or

more different things.

WHAT IS THERE TO DO?

Insert 1,5 million books into a regular

block of Gaztambide.

HOW MUCH ARE 1,5 MILLION

BOOKS?

46 books in a shelf are 1mL so

1,500,000 books are 32,608.70 mL or

32,7 Kilometers.

METHODOLOGY?

All books should be publicly

accessible.

WHERE TO INSERT THE BOOKS IN

AN ALREADY OCCUPIED

BUILDING?

Empty, public or "gray" areas.

NOT ENOUGH SPACE?

Create a new bookshelf that the

books can move by triggering a

search.

WILL IT BE PUBLIC ACCESSIBLE?

Yes because all books will move and

you can access them from different

points in the building.

Like an ATM on the street.

HOW WILL IT LOOK?

It should look like a big water slide

spiraling on top of the building, but

inside of the building you should not

see it because its inside the walls and

stuff like that.

SECTION FRONT

028

HOW TO UNIFY THEM?

Unity is important, and what I plan to

do is to mix programs to turn them

into a kind of hybrid. Mixing every

program with the housing program is

better because this program is has

de biggest cubic meters and it is

better to use it to connect programs.

DISTRIBUTION?

For the distribution of the programs

I'm going to use the same fibonacci

sequence, that way it makes more

sense for it to come together

In order to get the more surface area

for the programs I have to mirror the

sequence.

HOW DO THEY MIX?

Mixing the entrance of houses with

the other programs makes the other

programs automatically become

something different that it is.

It can basically become anything that

the users want to.

PROGRAM?

Thanks to the mixing technique I can

easily make the program for the hole

building.

APPEARANCE?

Apparently the programs do not mix,

but they do on the inside.

FINAL PRODUCT?

The final product is a very tall

building that has mixed uses at its

first 14 floors, and then it becomes

only housing.

HOUSING

GARDENS

RELIGION

MEDICAL

WHAT TO DO?

Choose seven blocks to join them into

one big block.

HOW?

Separating the programs of each

block into five parameters is the way

to go.

"VILLA CHINOYE"

After talking to the clients, they decided that people would like a savoe-like

villa in the private housing part of the master plan.

So I had to decompose the villa savoye and turn it into something

completely new, especially because they wanted it to be a 600m2 house

and full of terraces oriented to the south.

MILLION EYES

Million eyes is an observation tower in balboa park that will take back all of

the lost views from the park to the rest of san diego's landmarks, and will

create a new landmark itself.

So, why do we need this tower?, the truth is that in order to bring back the

old glory of balboa park -especially the prado- we need to look back at its

history.

Balboa Park began as 1400 acres of land set aside in 1868 by San Diego

civic leaders. Known then as “City Park”, the scrub-filled mesa that

overlooked present day Downtown San Diego sat without formal

landscaping or development for more than 20 years.(Today the Park's total

land parcel has been reduced to 1,200 acres.)

Just after the turn of the century, a master plan for Park improvements and

beautification was formally introduced. Supported by a City tax levied in

1905, the process began in 1903 and continued through 1910. Water

systems were installed, planting continued, roads were built, and the Park

began to take on much of the familiar look of today.

San Diego was set to play host to the 1915 Panama Exposition, and “City

Park” was a less-than memorable or distinctive name for such an

internationally prestigious event. The Park Commissioners decided on the

name Balboa Park, chosen in honor of Spanish-born Vasco Nuñez de

Balboa, the first European to spot the Pacific Ocean while on exploration in

Panama.

Most of the arts organizations along Balboa Park's famous El Prado

pedestrian walkway are housed in Spanish-Renaissance style buildings

constructed for the 1915 Exposition. It was one of the first times that this

highly ornamented, flamboyant architectural style had ever been used in

the United States.

The California Tower and dome, which houses the San Diego Museum of

Man, the Cabrillo Bridge (historic 1,500-foot-long bridge) and the Spreckels

Organ Pavilion (one of the world's largest outdoor pipe organs) were built

for the 1915 Exposition-some of the few permanent structures designed for

the fair.

050

Page 53: MILLION EYES - Andres Treviño 2012

That created a big problem for the old strategies that had the park built in

the first place, some of them are:

• Preserve views from park to bay and it surroundings.

• Achieve beauty by organic arrangement.

• Conserve, develop and utilize all natural resources.

Today the views are totally lost, organic arrangement was gone when they

built the prado for the expo, and we still use the natural resources, which is

a good thing.

My first take on this problems was of course the views, how can I give

those views back to the people without tearing down the parks beautiful

trees or the prado itself.

The answer was easy, get high enough.

Starting with the IDEA district concept, which stands for Innovation, Design,

Education and Arts, The Prado already have all these things, it has a large

sum of museums and education for children places. It has a

Spanish-Renaissance style to most of its buildings and corridors. Also has

some important innovation programs, including the air and space museum

and the San Diego art institute.

So the next question was where to do this, since the park is huge and

already filled with hills and canyons, buildings and streets, important

landmarks and memorial gardens.

So I went there and did a study of the area and found a big big problem, I

found that the park is not totally used, people only use one side of it, and

this is only because of one single thing, well actually two things but they

feel like one.

I noticed that the park is separated by a street (park blvd) and that creates

a boundary, an edge, a limit, and people don't even try to cross it because

when they are at the prado, the prado ENDS at the fountain, it has a big

curved bench-like thing with a lot of plants and shrubs planted behind it, so

you can not even see what is beyond that point.

And the worst part of it all is that on the other side of the street there are

some beautiful memorial gardens an natural vegatation, filled with nature

trails and bike paths. Some people do use it, but I think that they want to

keep it sectret.

And I though to myself that this was great, because I believe that the park

had solved one of the most important questions of the proyect ... where to

place this observation tower.

Now I know that somehow I need to have a direct link between the prado

the rest of the park. There is a pedestrian bridge close to the prado, but it is

tucked away and to the side, so you can rarely see anyone use it.

So I need to have a new wider and friendlier pedestrian bridge that can get

you across park blvd and into the east side of the park.

But my main objective stays the same, the views, they are the most

important thing and must be available for everyone.

This raises another question, how high do I need to be in order to see all

the way to the bayfront?, doing some quick study about hights and distance

I came to a conclusion that the observation tower needs to be at least 50m

high (164ft).

051

Page 54: MILLION EYES - Andres Treviño 2012

From that now I can establish different hights and direction of important

viewpoints for interesting parts of the park and san diego. Such as the

world famous zoo, you can get an aerial view of the prado, a golf course

and a sports center that are inside of balboa park, the canyons and nature

trails, and of course, san diego bay and coronado island with its

magnificent bridge.

Its is important to notice that cliff swallows come to san diego every year,

and not only to San Juan Capistrano. This gave me an idea to incorporate

the swallows into the project, and them being one of the most sociable

bird species of the world, shoud create a big and exiting event during the

year, so that would attract more and more peolpe to use the park and not

only go to the museums and zoo.

Swallows, particularly cliff swallows often live in close proximity to people.

Cliff Swallows originally inhabited open canyons and river valleys with

rocky cliffs for nesting. Many still nest in these habitats, but others have

adapted to nesting on man-made structures.

Cliff Swallows feed almost entirely on flying insects.

Cliff Swallows have tidy, well-constructed nests, formed from balls of mud

that they collect in their beaks. These nests are built on vertical walls,

natural or man-made, frequently with some sort of sheltering overhang.

Bridges, and large buildings are regularly used.

Cliff Swallows migrate to and from southern South America in large flocks,

over a considerable period of time. Most return to California in early March.

The date of fall departure varies from year to year, although fall migration

typically begins by early August, soon after the young become independent.

By taking advantage of man-made nesting sites, Cliff Swallows have

expanded their range considerably, exploiting many new areas.

Although the Cliff Swallow can nest solitarily, it usually nests in colonies.

Colonies tend to be small in the East, but further west they can number up

to 3,700 nests in one spot.

Nest is a covered bowl made of mud pellets, with a small entrance tunnel

on one side. Lined with grass. Nest placed on a vertical wall, usually just

under an overhang.

The gregarious Cliff Swallow nests in large colonies on buildings, cliffs, and

under bridges. The gourd-shaped mud nests can number up to several

hundred or thousand in a single location.

052

Page 55: MILLION EYES - Andres Treviño 2012

Swallows breeds in a variety of habitats with open foraging areas and cliffs

or buildings for nesting. Avoids heavy forest, desert, or high mountains.

Catches insects in flight, often high above ground.

Extreme coloniality makes population monitoring difficult and causes large

variations in an area over time. Populations appear to be increasing.

In order to attract cliff swallows to nest in the area I only need a few things,

water and flyings insects. Water has to be on natural soil so it can create

mud for the nests of the swallows and the insects are already in the park,

but I can plant some specifical plants to atract certian species that are not

dangerous or annoying to the public.

Also the swallows need some kind of overhang for the nesting, because

the nests are made of mud, they need protection from rain, and any other

kind of precipitation.

I found out, almost by accident about a plant that changes color during the

year, it changes from season to season, so it is perfect to let everyone

know that the swallows are arriving or leaving. This plant is called the safari

sunset and its a perennial plant, which means that it has leaves and

flowers all year long, so it doesn't go bald during the winter.

Safari Sunset’ and ‘Summer Red’ Cone Bush (Leucadendron) – This South

African native is related to proteas. Male and female flowers are borne on

separate plants. These shrubs need fast-draining soil. Plant in full sun.

‘Safari Sunset’ is an upright, vigorous grower with red bracts in summer

that turn light yellow in winter. ‘Summer Red’ is smaller with red bracts in

winter and spring.

Now I know that the observation tower needs to be open, with overhangs

so the cliff swallows can nest there, some kind of lake so the birds can

have mud for the nests, and different kinds of plants to attract a variety of

insects.

Views being my main strategy of design, I can start to put everything

together. Starting with the height and direction of the important viewpoints

from the observation tower. Then I can concentrate on the needs of the cliff

swallows. And because I would like it to be accessible for every one, it

needs to be free of charge. So that means that I need to insert some kind

of program to the tower, so it's not just a vertical promenade.

Choosing some levels of the tower that have litte or no use at all, I will

place different kind of program into them, starting with public restrooms,

cafes, restaurants/bars and small farmers markets where you can buy all

sorts of local fruits and vegetables. This will create a better experience for

the users and generate some money for the city and mainenance of the

observation tower and balboa park.

Because of that placement of the program some of the floor plans get a

slight or a big deformation, creating a more interesting project and walkway.

So in some floors you can hear the birds, in other you can smell, touch or

taste flowers or food, and of course in most of them you can have amazing

views. Making this a program for the senses.

There are several accesses to the observation tower, directly from the

prado, through some ramps from the rose garden or the nature trails, from

the new lake that sits directly below, and from the whole new park blvd

experience, which will hava a trolley line from the zoo to city college, wider

sidewalks with planted trees to create a nice shaded walkway from the park

to the city and viceversa.

Because the cliff swallow colonies get bigger and bigger every year, the

observation tower will be ever evolving, each year getting a little bit bigger

in size and bird density. Also would be a vertical garden, it is easier to

control the growth of plants in a vertical garden that regular gardens on

normal soil, so it will need little maintenance.

So it will change every season with the safari sunset flower that changes

color, and evey year with the growth of the swallow colonies.

Important strategies followed in the past are:

- Preserve views from park to bay, coast and surrounding mesas.

- Achieve beauty by organic arrangement.

- Conserve, develop and utilize all natural resources.

055

Page 58: MILLION EYES - Andres Treviño 2012

+ Most buildings are looking to a central corridor.

+ Most buildings have the same kind of

architecture.

BUILDINGS, LIMITS AND BOUNDARIES

- Buildings have a urban grid, not likely of a park.

- Limits and boundaries create a difficult

experience for pedestrians.

- Central corridor is used by cars also.

+ Lots of kinds of vegetation, which means that

most plants can grow here.

+ Water features create a fresher environment.

VEGETATION AND WATER FEATURES

- Some areas need more natural shading.

- Vegetation changes on each sides of Park blvd.

- Water features are too far apart from each other.

FAST SLOW

VEHICLES

PEDESTRIAN

+ Most connections are direct from the walkway.

+ Changing views from different places along the

central corridor.

CONNECTION BETWEEN IMPORTANT

PLACES AND GOOD VIEWS

- Some connections need to be improved (east

and west from Park blvd). Feels like the park is

only the east side.

- Some views are restricted because of

intentionally planted shrubs and trees.

+ There is a lot of human activity in the area.

+ Family gatherings.

+ Social events.

TRAFFIC SPEEDS AND HUMAN AGGLOMERATIONS

- Area is not entirely pedestrian friendly.

- Vehicle traffic speed is high for being inside a park.

- Pedestrians need to find their way.
