If you’re going to fly across the country for just one class, you’d better make it worth the effort. Beezie Madden did just that when she left Wellington,

Florida, for Thermal, California, and won the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix, the feature class of the HITS Coachella Desert Circuit, on March 17.

It’s Madden’s third win on the HITS Million tour, having topped classes at HITS Saugerties (New York) on Simon and at HITS Ocala (Florida) on Coach. This time Madden tacked up Darry Lou, her partner as the reserve member for the gold-medal winning team at the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games (North Carolina).

“I love coming for the prize money, obviously, but we’re in Wellington for 12 weeks, and it gets a little tiring as well,” Madden said. “It’s great to come here, see different people, a different ring, a new course designer.”

That course designer, Bernardo Cabral, had his work cut out for him. The class was set at National Standard (up to 1.50 meters), and the start list included a solid contingent of veteran horse-rider combinations—around 10 East Coasters flew in for the class—as well as some young riders and up-and-coming horses.

“It’s a pretty mixed group, and I wanted to make it tough because it’s a million dollars, but also to not give a bad experience to younger horses and people moving up,” said Cabral. “So with 57 horses it’s a big field, and I thought between five and 10 clears I’d be very happy.”

Cabral got his wish as six pairs found a fault-free way around the track. When it came time for the jump-off Erynn Ballard and Fellini S led the pack with a steady clear.

“I went second in the jump-off, and I was able to watch one go,” said Madden, 55, Cazenovia, New York. “I knew I had really fast ones behind me with these guys, so I wanted to really lay one down. Actually in hindsight I think I could have been beaten up the first line. I chickened out a little on leaving a stride out there, but I think I was quite fast everywhere else, so people had to take a risk to try to beat me.”

No one could quite do it. Last year’s winners Nayel Nassar and Lordan came closest to finish with the red ribbon, ahead of Ali Ramsay on Hermelien VD Hooghoeve.

“I was standing at the in-gate watching Beezie, and I realized I’m probably aiming for second today,” Nassar said. “She was really quick, really fast in her turns everywhere. I knew the priority was to leave the jumps up today, and if I took too much risk I would have risked having one down. I tried to do the most efficient round I could without over-pushing anywhere, and honestly this

feels like a win. There’s no shame to losing to Beezie, and the horse feels great. He’s 15 and still jumping fresh, so I’m really happy about that.”

Darry Lou and Madden paired up in the spring of 2017. He’d been ridden by Mexico’s Alberto Aldana through the four-star level, but under Madden’s saddle the 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion (Tangelo Van De Zuuthoeve—Venus, Nabab De Reve) truly blossomed, jumping double clear in a Nations Cup at Spruce Meadows (Alberta) a few months later.

Madden has eased Darry Lou into this season, showing him just three weeks.

“He’s only done two other grand prix [classes] this year,” she said. “He won a four-star in Wellington and showed in a five-star and only because of a big blooper on my part he had one down. He’s been jumping fantastic.”

Madden credited the stallion’s standout attitude as the feature that put him in the winner’s circle.

“He’s a really sweet horse, and in a way he’s kind of cocky because he’s easygoing and doesn’t get ruffled by anything,” she said. “So when I ride him I actually try to fire him up a little bit, and he seems to respond to that well. He goes around like a hunter if you let him, but when I energize him he gets a little more spark.”

THE DECISION IS IN: VERDICT’S A WINNERNick Haness’ career came full circle during the final week of HITS Coachella, March 13-17, when he catch rode Verdict for his first trainer, Michael Croopnick, to the top of the leaderboard in the $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby.

“This is a really special moment for me because we’ve got a lot of history,” said Haness, Temecula, California. “Michael was really the one who put me on the map and gave me all the fundamentals and started me in riding, so this is a really exciting win for the whole team.”

Verdict, an 8-year-old Anglo European Sport Horse (Ustinov—Lady Deister, Douglas), beat out 32 other horses to take the title over Quarter Note and Jamie Sailor, with Augusta Iwasaki picking up third on Vanderpump.

Riders faced tough courses and long galloping lines on the new grass field at AON Horse Park. In the second round, a six-stride bending line from a gate to a huge oxer caused plenty of problems.

“When I was approaching it in the handy I remember thinking to myself, ‘Just be patient. Don’t panic about it,’ ” said Haness, 31. “I really felt like as I got to the vertical I looked up at the six-stride line, and he just sort of followed my commands. He melted back when I told him to melt back to make it fit, and when I got to the oxer I squeezed him, and he really jumped over it. Once I got through that part I felt like we were home free.”

After winning the first round, Haness focused on strategy in the second go with the horse owned by Lindsey Schiefelbein.

“I usually shoot myself in the foot trying to be too handy—they call me ‘Handy Haness’—but my plan was to be a little conservative and just show excellent jumps,” he said. “He’s also very good in the handies, and he knows when I start slicing and turning; he picks up on that very well. His instinct then is to just jump bigger, jump higher and follow me even better. There was really only one inside turn that I looked at that I didn’t do. Being that

I was pretty close to the top of the leaderboard going into the second round I wanted to stay consistent.”

Though they’ve just contested a few derbies so far—Verdict and Haness were third during the USHJA International Hunter Derby in Thermal held Week 4—Haness has a big goal in mind: the Platinum Performance USHJA International Hunter Derby Championship in Kentucky.

“That will be really fun,” said Haness. “I’ve never done that competition before. I’d love to do it on that horse. He’s brave; he’s really game to do whatever you tell him to do, and there’s nothing he thinks he can’t do. That’s a really fun feeling when you’re on top of a horse.”

A PERFECT CAREER SWAPGet Rowdy might not be the most aptly named horse.

He came to Archie Cox’s Brookway Stables after eventing through intermediate with Heather Morris. While he earned some nice prizes, there was a problem with his eventing career: He didn’t want to go fast.

Naturally this didn’t seem like an issue when he came to the hunter barn. Cox and assistant trainer Karli Postel took him in a ticketed warm-up and knew they had a future star on their hands.

The 9-year-old Dutch Warmblood (Baltic VDL—Z. Unellie) started in the hunter and equitation rings and quickly figured out his job. Before long he transitioned from a pelham to a rubber D-ring snaffle and learned to stretch out and relax in true hunter style.

And he was rewarded for that at the HITS Coachella Desert Circuit, where he won the series award in the high performance hunter division with Postel up.

“He walks into the ring and wants to do it every time,” said Postel. “The best is he does it so gently. He steps over the 4' jumps like it’s nothing. He has a huge stride, so you can just lope around the course, and he feels so relaxed.”

“Rowdy” has proven to be a jack-of-all-trades. On the last Saturday of circuit, for example, he competed in the $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby with Postel, taking all the high options in Round 1. Then he headed over to Hunter Ring 3, where he jumped around a 2'9" equitation class and competed in a flat class with owner Kyra Russell. He returned to the grass field for the handy round of the derby, again jumping all the high options and finishing seventh.

“One week Kyra did him in the junior hunters, and he ended up being champion with her,” said Postel, 27. “I’m sure if I took him in the 1.20-meter classes he’d go right in and do it well too. He’s just a good horse.”

Postel said Rowdy will continue competing in the high performance hunters this year, as well as his main job as an equitation partner for Russell.

PACYNA WORKS HARD FOR THE WIN IN THE R.W. “RONNIE” MUTCH EQUITATION CHAMPIONSHIPAt the beginning of last year Emma Pacyna wasn’t exactly ready to win big equitation classes. She had just started as a working student for Georgy Maskrey-Segesman to help her ride sale horses.

“She hadn’t really done [the 3'6" equitation] before; she’d mostly done the 3'3",” said Maskrey-Segesman. “After the second week things weren’t going really well, and Emma was in tears. I said, ‘It’s going to work. We’ll put her on the best horses and give her some room and let her work it out. She’ll chip until she stops chipping.’ ”

By the end of circuit Pacyna was putting together nicer rounds, and in May she scored a 90 in an equitation class at Devon (Pennsylvania), which she followed up by winning her Maclay Regional Qualifier a few months later.

While it might seem counterintuitive for Maskrey-Segesman to sponsor a rider who’s green at the level, Pacyna had other skills that made her an appealing employee. The daughter of trainer Michelle

Pacyna, Emma grew up working in the barn and learning horsemanship.

“Emma was raised that you work hard, and she had to do everything herself,” said Maskrey-Segesman. “She’s not above mucking a stall or scrubbing water buckets. For me, as much as she didn’t have the mileage she had the ability to show up, work hard, be a part of the team. No job is too small. If I ask her to go to the show office to scratch one, or bring [Maskrey-Segesman’s business partner] Savannah [Jenkins] some water—oh and by the way I need you to walk this one out, and can you hack this one, and there are bridles that need to be cleaned. At 8 p.m. we’re still working together in the barn aisle.”

Maskrey-Segesman recalled how they’d left horses at a layover barn in Maryland during last year’s fall indoor circuit completely in Emma’s care and flown back to California. Maskrey-Segesman and Jenkins had a planning kerfuffle when they booked tickets to fly into Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, for the Pennsylvania National rather than the Maryland area, leaving 17-year-old Emma to load the horses on the trailer and drive them solo to Harrisburg.

“She’d only driven trucks around the neighborhood for 10 minutes or so, but she did it,” said Maskrey-Segesman. “We were waiting outside the Expo Center with bated breath, and there she was. Of course that was way beyond what we would normally expect, but I don’t know where you find a kid that has that kind of maturity and responsibility. She has the ability and the desire, and she has the understanding of a dollar and a hard day’s work.”

That independence came in handy for this year’s R.W. “Ronnie” Mutch Equitation Championship. In that class, students are sequestered from their trainers, and riders must walk the course and school solo with just a groom to hold their horses and set jumps. Ironically having a groom was a rare luxury for Emma, but she was used to walking courses alone. After two stellar rounds she won the class over Augusta Iwasaki and last year’s winner,

Emma Catherine Reichow. Not that it was easy. In Round 1 riders faced a challenging

track with several gymnastics built in, as well as a halt and reinback, counter-canter, hand gallop fence and trot fences. As the sun dipped below the horizon midway through the class shadows grew, and some horses didn’t want to cooperate. Emma went toward the end, but she didn’t have any problems. She credited her mount, Constantinos, a 9-year-old Oldenburg by Cadensky, for her win.

“I went in there, and I wanted to make sure I got all the tests done smoothly,” said Emma, 18. “The first line was forward to the whoaing six [stride line], and he’s pretty good at adjusting, so I was pretty confident about that part. I was just trying to go in there and have a smooth, solid round.”

She followed that up with a great jumper round for the second trip to win the day.

“We were so excited I almost broke my ankle running around the corner to give her a hug,” said Maskrey-Segesman. “We couldn’t have done it without Savannah Jenkins and Karen Healey, who’s like a mom to me and helps us a lot. And Emma got her work ethic from her mom and working on her mom’s farm. It’s just a perfect circle that’s come together.”

Emma has accepted a full scholarship to Oklahoma State University, and she’s deferring admission till January of 2020 so she can focus on her second and final trip to the major equitation finals.

Meanwhile Postel, Thousand Oaks, California, has some excitement in her own life outside the saddle. She recently earned her U.S. Equestrian Federation r-rated judge’s card, and she’s looking forward to making her debut in the judge’s box. She said the experience of getting her license helped her look at the sport differently.

“It gives you good perspective and makes you a better exhibitor and competitor,” said Postel. “I think it gives back to the sport and promotes knowledge of the entire sport. Management of shows is extremely complicated, and I think when you get a glimpse behind the curtain you get a better understanding that everyone is working really hard to give exhibitors a good experience.

“I came out of the handy earlier in circuit, and Archie commented that I was riding differently,” she continued. “He said, ‘You’re riding to win. You’ve watched from that booth, and now you’re on it from Step 1.’ I can feel a difference too.”

BERG COMES BACK ON TOPAdrienne Buttelmann Berg wasn’t expecting to clean up at HITS Coachella. After all, until November of last year she hadn’t been in the show ring for seven years. But that didn’t stop Berg from riding Swan Song to the adult amateur hunter, 36-45, circuit title.

“It’s great to be back in the ring, but it’s different,” said Berg, who had a successful junior career riding with John French. “When you’re a kid you don’t think about nerves; you just show up to ride and have fun. As an adult once you start paying your own bills you understand the weight of stepping into the ring. I just tried to focus on how lucky I was to be there and tried to let go of everything else.

“Swan Song makes it pretty easy,” she continued. “He just walks into the ring, and the judges seem to love him. [The staff at] Thumbs Up Farm—John Turner, Jack Hammond, Quinn Partridge and Keri Bailey—worked really hard since the horse came to the barn training him, and he performed fabulously. I’m still absorbing everything—it was such a whirlwind. I didn’t expect to go down there and have that kind of success.”

Berg has been back in the tack for the past four years, but until last fall she’d just been riding at home. She leased “Arthur,” an 8-year-old gelding (Cachas—Natalie VII), from Robin Landry for circuit.

“He likes a very confident, forward ride and someone that is kind of gentle with him,” said Berg, Redmond, Washington. “He’s got a little bit of a spook in him, and I think he needs to know that you trust him. He jumped everything; we had no issues at the show. I’ve only been riding him two months or so, but I really connected with him early on. I adore that horse—it’s hard not to. Once you ride him he’s incredible.”

Berg has been riding with Thumbs Up Farm for 10 years, but she took some time off to have her children, Vivian Berg, 7, and Jameson Berg, 4. She lives three minutes from the barn, so she can pop over there to ride while the children are at school. She also takes care of Vivian’s pony, who lives at a barn on her street.

Berg will continue showing this season with the goal of heading to the Capital Challenge Horse Show (Maryland).

AN UNEXPECTED WINSabine Cooper hoped to start her season strong, but she outdid her expectations when she and Juweel Van Maarle earned the 1.40-meter junior/amateur/amateur-owner series title.

“She’s a great mare, super easy on the ground and cuddly, and nothing bothers her,” said Cooper of the 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood (Cardento—Fiderline, Kashmir Van Schuttershof). “She’s easy to do anything with, and she jumps whatever from wherever you want. She’s the best when you stay out of her way. She’s super fast across the ground, so I never have to worry about time faults. I try to just stay super tall, tell her where to put her feet, then let her do her job.”

Cooper and Juweel Van Maarle paired up when the mare was 5, but for the first few years Mandy Porter and

Craig Starr did much of the riding and showing. Cooper now trains full time with Starr.

“She was really green when I bought her,” said Cooper. “She was difficult as a young horse, opinionated. We had to take our time getting her to work with us rather than against us. She’s come a long way.

“They did a lot of ground work with her and flatwork and work over poles,” she continued. “Craig did a lot with her on the longe line, getting her to compress her body and move her body to move with the rider.”

Cooper was especially thrilled with the win because she commuted from Portland, Oregon, where she’s a junior at Reed College studying linguistics, to compete. She showed five of the eight weeks, letting “Juweel” have a couple breaks where the mare could go back to her home in Encinitas, California.

“The commuting isn’t easy, but the program works for me because the exams are take home, and I’m able to study and do my papers on planes or after I compete,” said Cooper. “Here I spend all my time in the library, and when I’m home [in San Diego] I focus on the horses.”

When she’s not in the library you can find Cooper in the gym, where she works on conditioning to stay fit for riding.

Cooper has a major goal with Juweel for this season: competing in the Black Barn Restaurant Junior/Amateur-Owner/Amateur Classic at HITS Saugerties (New York) during HITS Championship Week in September.

Sabine Cooper managed to get away from her studies at Reed College (Ore.) for long enough to ride Juweel Van Maarle to the 1.40-meter junior/amateur/amateur-owner title. ESI PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTO
