Leicester City's provision for young people, who find it difficult to learn in school
Inside this issue:
Over £195 collected for Sport Relief Day!
This term’s newsletter contains an amazing mixture of articles relating to activities that our students have
been involved in during the Spring Term. These include charitable, educational and community based events
and projects. It is also fantastic news that our, long awaited, Braunstone Skills Project has now been given
the go ahead and will begin in earnest during the Summer Term.
Some of our KS3 students enjoyed a very thought provoking and informative presentation by Alter EGO
Creative Solutions. A team of young actors presented an innovative and thought-provoking play and then
held a discussion with students designed to encourage them to consider a range of personal safety issues,
including child sexual exploitation and the safe use of the internet. All students engaged enthusiastically and
discussed these topics very responsibly with the actors. Many of our students took part in Sport Relief and
completed a range of sporting challenges; students at our Carisbrooke Centre held a cycle challenge, raising
£120, while students at our Newry Centre raised £75 by organising a run around Knighton Park.

Our Millgate Lodge students have been taking part in a range of themed
activities and events. In particular ‘The Friday Lectures’ during which students discuss and debate a range of topics such as obesity, smoking as well as gun
and knife crime. Our KS4 Braunstone Skills Students are all hard at work sitting and preparing for their examinations. Many students have already achieved qualifications in
Maths and English and the remainder are on course to achieve well in their examinations. It is encouraging to see so many students taking their
education so seriously and striving to achieve qualifications so that they are able to progress into further education and training once they leave school. Thank you to all our partner organisations for your continued support. Without your hard work and dedication our students would not be able to make such
positive progress and engage so productively in their education.
I wish you all an enjoyable and relaxing Easter break. Best Wishes Shaun Whittingham [Head Teacher]

Outside Project at Braunstone Centre
As we rapidly approach the Easter break the
Braunstone Skills Centre has been given the go ahead to complete work on the site in preparation for the
Outside Project that will be launched in the summer term.
These works include improved perimeter fencing, work cabin installation adjacent to the building and major
ground works to house the cabin as you can see from the pictures of Richard and Olly.
This exciting new Project intends to
encompass skills such as small scale project management, functional design,
landscaping, outside installation art and horticulture to name but a few components.
All that remains is to thank the members
of staff here at BSC for all of their
considerable efforts this term and enjoy
the Easter break.

The Relationships and Sex Education Project
Sports Relief
Run by the
Newry
Friday, 21st March marked the official Sports Relief day for 2014 and The
Newry continued their tradition by organising a run around Knighton Park.
Luckily the sun shone and the students made a valiant effort around the 1 mile
course. Individual students were sponsored by their families and
neighbours with a total of £75 being raised for this worthy cause.
The little heroes were treated to jacket potatoes on their return to The Newry.
Well done to all those who took part.
This year for Relationships and Sex education week ( R.S.E) I hired
a drama company called Alter EGO Creative Solutions. They performed a hard hitting play called Chelsea’s choice. The play was
targeted at young people, teachers and professionals. It raised awareness around child sexual exploitation. It promoted safe internet use and raised awareness of the grooming process and
many more risks that young people take. It proved to be highly effective in helping students to identify healthy relationships too.
Chelsea’s choice tells a story of a group of three students who discover the diary of a girl called Chelsea. Chelsea was a young girl
who, having fallen out with her friends and family , was approached by a man called Gary. Gary was older, owned a car, had a flat and
treated her like an adult. Unfortunately Gary was not what he seemed to be! Chelsea’s story is played out and examined by the three students along with their teacher in an attempt to understand
what happened to Chelsea and how it could have been prevented.
It was a powerful performance with a plenary at the end, with questions and answers from the cast. It gave our students the skills
and knowledge to be able to protect themselves from this form of abuse.
After a favourable response from visitors for the 3D artwalls currently on display at The
Newry, it was suggested that we offer a similar service to schools in and around Leicester.
With funding from the BSF Arts & Culture Steering Committee and articles on the
Leicester City Council website, two schools have recently taken up the offer.
Mellor Primary School have requested a large world map for a stairwell in their new school.
Whilst Catherine Primary School have asked for an outside teaching aid based on themes linked
to their curriculum, such as Space and How We Move.
The world map consisting of large, painted, wooden jigsaw type pieces measuring nearly 4
metres across, will be installed later this month. Any school interested in having similar work done are welcome to contact Stuart
Hicking at The Newry.

At Millgate Lodge we have started to
introduce The Friday Lectures. The students look forward to these and
subjects covered include drug awareness, gun and knife crime, obesity, smoking and
prison life. This leads to themed lessons covering all
aspects of the National curriculum but also widens students’ knowledge of world affairs
including the Holocaust, Chinese New Year and fracking.
The lessons are engaging and this is reflected in the positive attitudes that students are
demonstrating around the centre. They are given the opportunity to cook, and again this is themed – Valentine biscuits and pancakes
were very successful. We have also introduced ‘quiet down time’
when the students are able to relax and begin to appreciate the wonders of literature in book form, and we are steadily increasing
our library.
Finally, we would like to welcome Kelso to
our team. He has already fitted in and is
very popular with the students and staff
alike.
