DESCRIPTION

Claire's presentation on biodiversity loss was the best of all of my students'. She used good analysis and exposition, and cited all sources correctly.

Target 7.B: Reduce biodiversity loss, achieving, by 2010, a significant reduction in the rate of loss

7.1 Proportion of land area covered by forest7.2 CO2 emissions, total, per capita and per $1 GDP (PPP)7.3 Consumption of ozone-depleting substances7.4 Proportion of fish stocks within safe biological limits7.5 Proportion of total water resources used 7.6 Proportion of terrestrial and marine areas protected7.7 Proportion of species threatened with extinction[1] UNDP MDGs

Goal 7: Ensure Environmental Sustainability

The Issue I Am Addressing

Reduce biodiversity loss

※ What is biodiversity?[2] Foufopoulos Lab

Page 5: Millennium Development Goal 7 Target B

● Biodiversity is a contraction of “biological diversity” which was first put together by an American scientist called Walter G Rosen in 1986.● It refers to the number, variety and variability of living organisms. In its widest sense, therefore, it is synonymous with “Life on Earth”. ● It embraces two different concepts: one is a measure of how many different living things there are and the other is the measure of how different they are. The Causes Of Biodiversity Loss

● expansion of agriculture, logging, fishing and other natural resource-based activities, as well as increases in pollution● a number of domestic factors including population growth, migration, poverty, inequality and increased demand for consumer goods● international or global factors, such as changing trade opportunities and growing economic interdependence [5] The Root Causes of Biodiversity Loss page 59, chapter 4 by Mang, Johanna, Pamela Stedman-Edwards, and Alexander Wood

Page 8: Millennium Development Goal 7 Target B

● introduction of exotic species● over-harvesting● homogenisation in agriculture and forestry ● global environmental change [3] Prof. Luc Hens & Prof. Emmanuel K. Boon

In the latest assessment in 2006, 1210 birds species are considered threatened with extinction.

The Effects Of Biodiversity Loss

Biodiversity is very important for human beings. ● It provides us with food, medicines and natural cycles. [8] NERC-National Environment Research Council

The Effects Of Biodiversity Loss

● It keeps our living bank balanced. ● It is part of our traditions and culture.● It is a hidden treasure that enriches all our lives. ● It is essencial in the sense of economy, sustainable development, and natural products.

They Touch My Heart

Personally speaking, I love nature. I respect all the creatures. I want to fight for their rights. I hope people could know that even if they can not speak, they have feelings. If we could not change our wrong behaviors, we are doomed to be punished by nature.

Organization

Name: Conservation International—CI

Building upon a strong foundation of science, partnership and field demonstration, CI empowers societies to responsibly and sustainably care for nature, for our global biodiversity, for the well-being of humanity.

Mission:

[11] Conservation International-mission

[11]

Page 14: Millennium Development Goal 7 Target B

Example Project 1—Forests Carbon Projects

To reduce the amount of greenhouse gases, especially CO2 released into the atmosphere, CI has carried out its project—protecting standing forests and slowing forest loss—in many places, such as Tengchong China, Makira, Mantadia Corridor, Philippines, Peru, Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico, Liberia, Indonesia, Colombia and so on.

Page 15: Millennium Development Goal 7 Target B

Example Project 2—Marine Projects

CI is working with communities, governments, and partner organizations around the world to protect oceans. For example, off the coast of western Papua in the region of Raja Ampat, CI researchers have found generally healthy coral populations adapting to climate change. They are learning what causes this phenomenon and how we can help other coral populations adapt in similar ways. [13] Conservation International-oceans

[15]

Page 16: Millennium Development Goal 7 Target B

Example Project 3—Water Projects

CI and their partners are implementing pilot projects in different regions to ensure the development of successful, replicable strategies to conserve the ecosystem services provided by freshwater systems and other ecosystems. These projects include Freshwater RAP at Virachey National Park, The Reserve at Lashi Lake, and Water and Wildlife of the Yucatan. These will help pay for conserving biodiversity and maintaining ecological functions across terrestrial and aquatic biomes. [14] Conservation International-freshwater

The Organization Is Worthy Of Support

● Founded in 1987, CI hold a belief that people would live in harmony with nature and began to take actions. ● From Patagonia and Starbucks to Wal-Mart, from Costa Rica to China, CI has made this future a reality with the support of an ever-expanding list of key players. ● Throughout this process, CI has achieved many successes. Meanwhile, they continue to make history, developing the tools necessary to protect nature for future generations.

How To Support The Organization

Bear the belief of protecting biodiversity in mind.

Put the belief into action:Pay close attention to organizations like CI.Care about the world around you.Do some job or make a donation internationally, nationally or locally as possible as we could. If any problem is found, email them.If any good idea occurs, tell them.

Remember all the time—we can always make a difference on the other side of the world!
