INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE AND CARE

• This respirator/filter provides LIMIT-ED protection. It may help reduceexposure to airborne biologicalagents, including H1N1 (swine) fluvirus, avian (bird) flu virus, other typesof influenza, SARS, or other bacterialor viral biological agents and helpreduce the risk for influenza infectionduring a pandemic, but will NOT elim-inate the risk of exposure, infection, illness, or death.

• This respirator/filter is certified byNIOSH to comply with the require-ments specified for the designated fil-ter efficiency level; however, appropri-ate authorities have NOT establisheda safe level of exposure to biologicalagents. Therefore, the respirator mayNOT prevent transmission of influen-za virus.

• Refer to the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention (CDC) atwww.cdc.gov for guidance on the useof respirators to help decrease expo-sure to H1N1 virus or other airbornebiological agents in community, home, and occupational settings. TheCDC recommends fit testing, medicalevaluations, and training for optimaleffectiveness when a respirator isused in a non-occupational setting.Neglecting these preparatory meas-ures may cause an unsafe condition.Respirators used in an occupationalsetting MUST be used in accordancewith a complete respiratory protec-tion program as required by OSHA,which includes proper selection, training, fit-testing, and fit-checking.Detailed information on a respiratoryprotection program is available bycontacting OSHA or visitingwww.osha.gov.

• Do NOT remove respirator in contam-inated areas. The outer surface of therespirator MUST be treated as if it iscontaminated at all times. Tight-fit-ting safety goggles, or a full-face-piece respirator, may further help pre-vent transmission of influenza virus.

• The CDC recommends frequent handwashing and wearing gloves to helpprevent transmission of disease dueto exposure to surfaces where con-taminants may be present, and alsoimmediately following removal of therespirator.

• Do NOT reuse or share maintenance-free respirators. ALWAYS clean car-tridge-style respirators before reusein accordance with the instructionsprovided.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Millennium APR/CBRN Respirator is anair purifying respirator intended for use inatmospheres which are not immediatelydangerous to life or health (non-IDLH). Thisrespirator is intended for applications whichmay require the user to enter or exit a haz-ardous area, or work within the area for alimited time.

Inhaled air is drawn through the canister/cartridge, which is designed to remove, neutralize, and/or trap specific contami-nates as listed on the NIOSH approvalinsert. Exhaled air leaves the facepiecethrough the facepiece exhalation valve.

It is important that the user becomes famil-iar with the application and operation of theMillennium APR Respirator and ensures thatit fits properly before use.

When properly fitted to the user, theMillennium full facepiece with nosecup andhead harness, combined with the appropri-ate canister/cartridge, becomes a completerespiratory protective device. The respirator consists of the following sub-assemblies:• full facepiece (with nosecup)• filter cartridge/canister

Facepieces are available in three sizes:P/N 10051286 (small) with Clear Outsert

OTHER RESPIRATOR CONFIGURATIONS

This respirator can be used in other config-urations that stated in these User’sInstructions. Below is a list of these otherconfigurations and the part number for theUser’s Instructions. Review the NIOSHmatrix to verify the configuration that isbeing used is an approved configuration.

RESPIRATOR USE LIMITATIONS

The wearer must comply with the followingMSA respirator use limitations:A. MAXIMUM USE CONCENTRATION Do

not exceed any of the following:

TAL 906 (L) Rev. 19 - 4303517

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

1. Routine Usea. 50 times the exposure limit for the

contaminants present if using a quan-titative fit test method. Using a quali-tative fit test may reduce the maxi-mum use concentration. See theRespirator Fit Test section.

b. Immediately Dangerous to Life orHealth (IDLH) concentration for anycontaminant present.

2. Escape (for Gas Mask only)B. The limitations outlined in the applicable

NIOSH approvalC. Any applicable limitation contained in a

standard established by regulatoryagency (such as OSHA) with jurisdictionover the wearer.

An appropriate cartridge change-outschedule must be developed by a quali-fied professional, unless the car-tridge/canister utilizes an end-of-service-life indicator. The change-out schedulemust take into account all factors thatmay influence respiratory protectionincluding specific work practices andother conditions unique to the workersenvironment. If using against substanceshaving poor warning properties, there isno secondary means of knowing when toreplace the cartridge/canister. In suchcases, take appropriate additional pre-cautions to prevent overexposure, whichmay include a more conservativechange-out schedule or using an air-sup-plied respirator or SCBA. Failure to followthis warning can result in serious person-al injury or death. As a reference, a par-tial list of substances having poor warn-ing properties follows:

Acrolein Nitro compounds:Aniline Nitrogen oxidesArsine NitroglycerinBromine NitromethaneCarbon monoxide OzoneDiisocyanates PhosgeneDimethyl sulfate Phosphine

Hydrogen cyanide Phosphorous trichlorideHydrogen selenide StivineMethanol Sulfur chlorideMethyl bromide Urethane or otherMethyl chloride diisocyanateMethylene chloride containin paintsNickel carbonyl Vinyl chlorideNitric Acid

D. MIXTURES OF CONTAMINANTS Thisgas mask can be used for protectionagainst a mixture of contaminants thatare present simultaneously or alternatelyagainst one contaminant then another(using the same canister) if the mixturemeets the following conditions:

1. The canister/cartridge must beapproved for all contaminants present.

2. NIOSH permits mixing of the followingcontaminants: organic vapors, chlorine, chloride dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, acidgases, ammonia, and carbon monoxide.

3. Particulates can be mixed with anyother particulate or any gas or vapor forwhich the canister is approved.

4. Contaminants present simultaneouslymust be below IDLH levels for the spe-cific contaminants. If any one contami-nant in the mixture exceeds the IDLHconcentration, then the entire mixturemust be treated as IDLH and the respi-rator cannot be used (except for escapewhen using respirator in a gas maskconfiguration).

5. Mersorb-P100 cartridges can be usedagainst a mixture of chlorine and mercu-ry that are both present simultaneously, but cannot be used if alternatingbetween mercury-contaminated atmos-pheres and chlorine-contaminatedatmospheres.

E. TIME USE LIMITATION1. Canister and cartridge with an N95 or

R95filter shall be limited to 8 hours ofuse (continuous or intermittent) againstparticulates. (Service time can beextended by performing an evaluation inthe specific workplace setting thatdemonstrates (a) that the extended usewill not degrade the filter efficiency

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

below 95%, or (b) that the total massloading of the filter is less than 200mgfor a single canister application or lessthan 100 mg each for a dual cartridgeapplication).

2. GMHF-C-P100 and HydrogenFluoride/P100: Canister must bereplaced after each use against hydro-gen fluoride (not to exceed 12 hours) toensure the integrity of the P100 filter.

F MULTI-USE LIMITATIONS (OptiFilter XLonly)

1. Approved as a high efficiency particulateair filter on approved Powered AirPurifying Respirators. Also, approved asa P100 filter, but ONLY when used withan approved negative pressure respira-tor. Do not exceed maximum use con-centrations established by regulatorystandards.

EXPOSURE LIMITS

A listing of applicable exposure limits fromthe following sources is provided in MSA sResponse® Respirator Selector: availableonline at www.MSAnet.com.- American Conference of Governmental

Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH)- Occupational Safety and Health

Administration (OSHA)- National Institute for Occupational

Safety and Health (NIOSH)- American Industrial Hygiene Association

(AIHA)

Contact MSA at 1-800-MSA-2222 for infor-mation.

EXPOSURE LIMITS FOR MIXTURES

The American Conference of GovernmentalIndustrial Hygienists (ACGIH) publishes thefollowing information to determine the TLVof a mixture.

First, determine the total concentration ofthe chemical mixture (C ) from the individualcontaminant concentrations (C1, C2, C3...)using the following formula:

CMixture = C1+C2+C3+...

The TLV of the mixture is found by using thefollowing formula where T1, T2, T3, ... arethe individual contaminant TLVs and C1,C2, C3... are the individual contaminantconcentrations:

Only use these equations if the contami-nants present are actually mixed. Somesubstances do not mix and may be presentseparately, for example, in pockets or at dif-ferent levels. In that case, the lowest TLV ofthe substances present must be used todetermine the appropriate respirator cate-gory for protection against all contaminantspresent.

See MSA’s Response Respirator Selectorfor additional information.

SIZE SELECTION

Regardless of facial dimensions and respi-rator sizing charts, an actual respirator fittest, either qualitative or quantitative mustbe performed to ensure the correct respira-tor size selected.

Fit test the respirator size relative to yourfacial features and dimensions. The SafetyAdministrator or Program Manager mightassist in selecting the initial size to try.

Carefully don the respirator and conduct anegative pressure seal test. See donninginstructions for procedure.

If the respirator does not pass the NegativePressure Seal Test or feels uncomfortable, try the next nearest size relative to yourface.

Passing the Negative Pressure Seal Testdoes not verify the size is correct. The sizeselected must be verified by successfullypassing a Respirator Fit Test, either qualita-tive or quantitative. If the respirator passesa Negative Pressure Seal Test but DOESNOT pass a Respirator Fit Test, the nextnearest size relative to your facial featuresand dimensions should be tried.

Once the proper size is selected, the respi-rator must pass a Negative Pressure SealTest every time the mask is donned toensure proper fit before using the respirator.

If other than facial seal leakage is detected, the condition must be investigated and cor-rected before another test is made.

The respirator must also pass the tightnesstest before the user attempts to enter antoxic atmosphere.

The mask will not furnish protection unlessall inhaled air is drawn through a suitablecanister/cartridge(s).

RESPIRATOR FIT TEST

The user must perform a respirator fittest (Quantitative Test or Qualitative Test)and follow all warnings and limitationsspecified. Failure to do so can result inserious personal injury or death.

A qualitative or quantitative respirator fit testmust be routinely carried out for each wear-er of this respirator to determine or confirmthe amount of protection that the respiratorprovides. The fit test method chosen mayimpact the maximum use concentration.

Quantitative Test: — If a quantitative fittest is used:

For use in a CBRN application a fit factor ofat least 2000, based on ambient aerosol fittest methods or equivalent, is requiredbefore any type of respirator is assigned toan individual.

Qualitative Test — If a qualitative fit test isused, only validated protocols are accept-able.

For use in a CBRN application only, theindividual must pass a test designed toassess a fit factor of at least 2000.

Respirator fit tests are explained fully in theAmerican National Standard Practices forRespiratory Protection, ANSI Z88.2-1992which is published by the AmericanNational Standards Institute, 11 West 42ndStreet, New York, New York, 10036 andOccupational Safety and Health Standards,OSHA 1910.134, which is published by theOccupational Safety and HealthAdministration, 200 Constitution Avenue,NW, Washington DC, 20210.

CHECKPOINTS BEFORE USE

1. Check that all parts of the respirator arecomplete and undamaged. See theInspection section for InspectionsProcedures.

2. Check that the filter canister/cartridgeapproval is appropriate and effectiveagainst the contaminant in the environ-ment.

INSTALLING/REPLACING THECANISTER/CARTRIDGE

Know the contaminant(s) in the environ-ment before entering. Always check thatthe filter canister/cartridge(s) is appropriatefor use in the environment. A filter canis-ter/cartridge which is not designed for thecontaminant present may not provide pro-tection. Failure to follow this warning canresult in serious personal injury or death.

After verifying that the canister/cartridgetype is appropriate for use in the environ-ment:1. Verify shelf life expiration date on car-

ton, bag, and canister/cartridge(s) labelhas not been exceeded.

DO NOT use an expired canis-ter/cartridge. Failure to follow this warn-ing can result in serious personal injuryor death.

DO NOT use the canister/cartridge if thebag is opened, damaged, or missing. Thecanister/cartridge must be in its originalpackaging prior to use in a contaminatedenvironment. Do not reuse the canister/cartridge. Failure to follow this warningcan result in serious personal injury ordeath.

2. Remove canister/cartridge from itspackaging.

3. Inspect the canister/cartridge to be surethat it is not damaged.

4. Thread the filter canister/cartridge intothe facepiece port and hand-tighten.

Use the canister/cartridge immediately uponopening the bag. For gas mask canister, refer to the shelf life section for storing thecanister outside the packaging. Discardcanister/cartridge after each use.

Replace the canister/cartridge after eachuse. Follow the established canis-ter/cartridge change-out schedules toensure that canister/cartridge are replacedbefore breakthrough occurs. When used atdefined occupational exposure limits, therated service time cannot be exceeded.

The GMT cartridge must not exceed a 60minute use time.

After using the respirator in a gas maskapplication for escape, the canister must bereplaced before reusing the respirator.

For CBRN Applications OnlyDO NOT use this respirator beyond eight (8)hours after initial use in an atmosphere con-taining CBRN agents or beyond two (2)hours after initial use in an atmosphere con-taining CBRN agents in liquid or mist form;otherwise, agent permeation may occur.

DO NOT replace canister/cartridge in acontaminated area. Be sure to followapplicable decontamination procedures.Failure to follow this warning can causeinhalation of contaminated air, resultingin serious respiratory injury or death.

When the mask is adjusted properly, thewearer should not taste or smell the con-taminant, or experience eye, nose, or throatirritation. The wearer’s inhalation resistanceshould be as experienced during training.

TAL 906 (L) Rev. 19 - 43035113

PREPARING THE RESPIRATOR FOR USE

If the respirator does not perform asspecified, it must not be used until it hasbeen checked by authorized personnel.Failure to follow this warning can resultin serious personal injury or death.

Return to a non-contaminated areaimmediately if you experience unusualsensations (nausea, dizziness, eye irrita-tion, unusual odor or taste, excessivefatigue, or difficulty breathing). Failure tofollow this warning can result in seriouspersonal injury or death.

TAL 906 (L) Rev. 19 - 430351 14

DONNING

DO NOT wear eyeglasses under the face-piece. The temples or sidebars on eyeglasses will prevent an air-tight seal. Ifyou must wear glasses, install anapproved spectacle kit listed on theNIOSH approval matrix insert. Failure tofollow this warning can cause inhalationof contaminated air, resulting in seriousrespiratory injury or death.

Verify that the respirator is properly pre-pared before donning. See Preparing theRespirator for Use section. Failure to fol-low this warning can result in seriouspersonal injury or death.

DONNING PROCEDURES

1. Loosen the harness head straps on thefacepiece so that the strap end tabs areapproximately 1” from the buckles.

2. With the facepiecelens facing away, grasp the templestraps and neckstraps in each hand.

3. Slightly expand theharness straps, placechin into the face-piece, and pull theharness over the backof the head.

4. Support the weight of the mask by hold-ing the outlet valve assembly in thepalm of one hand. With the free hand, adjust the facepiece securely to theface, making sure the chin and nose areseated securely.

5. While holding the facepiece securely inposition, tighten one temple strap at atime by pulling straight back (not out)with small jerks until mask feels snug onthat side.

6. Tighten the other tem-ple strap in samemanner until bothsides feel the same.

7. Ensure facepiece is centered on face bylooking down at the nosecup, it shouldbe uniform on each side of the face. Ifnot, readjust the temple straps.

Note: Ensure that no hair is under the tabsand sealing surface. Also, the straps shouldnot cut into the ears.

DONNING

NEGATIVE PRESSURE SEAL TEST

The Negative Pressure Seal Test must beperformed each time the facepiece isdonned. A good face-to-facepiece sealmust be verified before entering a haz-ardous area.

Perform the test as follows:1. Ensure respirator is assembled properly.2. Block off canister/cartridge inlet using

the palm of the hand.3. Inhale gently and hold breath for 10 sec-

onds. If the seal is good, the facepiecewill collapse and remain collapsedagainst face. Remove hand and breathenormally.

4. If the facepiece did not remain col-lapsed during the test, or any leakage isnoticed, readjust straps and performNegative Pressure Seal Test again.

5. If this does not correct the leak, themask will not provide protection. If theleakage is from the face seal, a differentsize mask may provide a good seal. Ifother than face seal leakage is detected, the condition must be corrected beforeperforming another test.

This device may not seal properly withyour face if you have a beard, gross side-burns or similar physical characteristics(see ANSI Z88.2). An improper facial sealmay allow contaminants to leak into thefacepiece, reducing or eliminating respi-ratory protection. Do not use this deviceif such conditions exist. The negativepressure seal test must be conductedand passed before each use. Neverremove the facepiece except in a safe,non-hazardous, non-toxic atmosphere.Failure to follow this warning can resultin serious personal injury or death.

DONNING THE BUTYL COATED NYLONHOOD ACCESSORY

Ensure a complete Negative PressureSeal Test is conducted and passed.Failure to follow this warning can resultin serious personal injury or death.

1. Position the hood sothat the lens openingof the hood is facingforward. Be sure thatthe hood is right sideout with the draw-string exposed on theoutside of the hood.

2. Fold the back panel ofthe hood upward toexpose the inside ofthe hood at the lensopening. Next, in eachhand, grasp the sidesof the hood at the lensopening.

3. Expand and slide thelens opening of thehood over the car-tridge/ canister com-ponent. Ensure thefacepiece seal ismaintained.

4. Using both hands, grasp the back panelof the hood and pull itover the facepieceand head. The lensopening of the hoodshould coincide withthe lens opening of the facepiece. (Usea buddy for assembly if situationrequires).

TAL 906 (L) Rev. 19 - 430351 16

DONNING

5. Carefully tuck theelastic lens opening ofthe hood around theback of the facepiecelens rings, componenthousing assembly, andapplicable accessory. The rain shield of the hood should beuniformly over the upper lens ring of thefacepiece. The elastic lens openingshould be in contact with the rubbersurface of the facepiece. Be sure tosmooth out any wrinkles or folds thatmight exist along the edge of the elastic.

6. Conduct a successful Negative PressureSeal Test.

7. Attach each of thearm straps to the frontof the hood shroudusing the Velcroattachment pads.Adjust the arm strap, using the buckleslides, so that the arm straps provide asnug fit, but still allow for easy move-ment.

8. Tighten the drawstringcord by securing thebottom of the cordand sliding the cordtightener toward thefront of the neck. Thedrawstring shouldprovide a snug comfortable fit. Ensuredrawstring is not twisted or knotted.

Do not over-tighten the drawstring. Overtightening the drawstring can restrictbreathing. Failure to follow this warningcan cause serious injury or death.

9. Pull the shroud of thehood uniformly overthe shoulders.

10. Repeat the Negative Pressure Seal Testto ensure a sufficient face-to-facepieceseal is achieved before exposure to ahazardous agent.

CLEANING AND DISINFECTING

DO NOT use alcohol as a germicidebecause it may deteriorate rubber parts.

Depending on the cleaning policy adopted, either a designated person or the usershould clean the respirator after each use.Non-sudsing Confidence Plus® CleaningSolution (P/N 10009971) from MSA is rec-ommended. It is a germicidal cleaner thatcleans and disinfects in one operation. Itretains its germicidal efficiency in hardwater to inhibit the growth of bacteria. It willnot deteriorate rubber, plastic, glass, ormetal parts. Refer to the label for useinstructions. A solution as effective asConfidence Plus Cleaning Solution andcompatible with MSA respirator compo-nents may be substituted. ANSI suggeststhat users be trained in the cleaning proce-dure.

Be careful not to breathe or touch thecontaminant in handling the respirator orits parts. If necessary, use equipmentdisposal to protect you from the specificcontaminant. Failure to follow this warn-ing can result in serious personal injuryor death.

1. Preparing Solutiona. Follow the instructions with the

Confidence Plus Cleaning Solution.b. If the Confidence Plus Cleaning

Solution is not used, wash in a mildcleaning solution, rinse thoroughly, and submerge in a germicide solutionfor the manufacturer’s recommendedtime.

2. Clean and Disinfect the Facepiecea. Remove the canister/cartridge(s) from

the facepiece.b. Thoroughly wash the facepiece (and

nose cup) in the cleaning solution. Asoft brush or sponge can be used toclean the soiled facepiece. Be sure toinclude cleaning the exhalation valve

and seat.c. Rinse the facepiece and components

in clean, warm (110˚F), water (prefer-ably running and drained).

If not rinsed thoroughly, cleaning agentresidue may irritate the wearer’s skin.

d. Allow the facepiece to air dry. Do notdry the parts by placing them near aheater or in direct sunlight. The rub-ber will deteriorate.

e. Operate the exhalation valve by handto be sure it works properly.

f. Harness (straps and buckles)g. The facepiece and components

should be air-dried or hand-dried witha clean lint-free cloth.

DO NOT force-dry the parts by placingthem in a heater or in direct sunlight. Therubber will deteriorate. When facepieceis thoroughly dried, store the facepiece inthe clam shell in which it was shipped.

LENS CLEANING PROCEDURE

Occasionally, Millennium Facepieces mayexperience a “fogging” of the lens. Usuallythis fogging is caused by a wax that is partof the urethane lens formulation. This waxserves as a mold release when the lens ismanufactured. Under conditions of hightemperature or low atmospheric pressure, the wax can migrate to the surface of thelens and cause the fogging. The wax can beremoved with VM&P Naphtha or StoddardSolvent. The VM&P Naphtha and StoddardSolvent should be available in a paint store.

1. To remove the wax, pour a smallamount of VM&P Naphtha or StoddardSolvent onto a clean soft cloth.

TAL 906 (L) Rev. 19 - 43035121

CLEANING AND DISINFECTING

Apply VM&P Naphtha or StoddardSolvent to the lens ONLY. Do NOT applythe VM&P Naphtha or Stoddard Solventto the entire facepiece. If it contactsparts other than the lens those compo-nents must be replaced. Failure to followthis warning can result in serious person-al injury or death.

2. Gently rub the lens to remove the wax.It may take several applications toremove all of the wax.

3. Once the lens becomes wet from thesolvent it is difficult to see where thelens was rubbed and where it was not.

4. The number of repeat procedures willdepend on the amount of wax present.

5. After wiping the lens to remove the wax,the facepiece should be cleaned with arespirator cleaner such as MSAConfidence Plus Germicidal Cleaner. This will help to remove residual solventfrom the facepiece.

VM&P Naphtha and Stoddard Solventhave a distinct solvent odor that could beobjectionable to respirator wearers.Individuals cleaning the facepiecesshould follow the use directions thatcome with the solvents, work in a wellventilated area, and use proper personalprotective equipment. Failure to followthis warning can result in serious person-al injury or death.

If the respirator is not properly cleanedafter using VM&P Naphtha and StoddardSolvent the wearer may experience dis-comfort.

INSPECTION

INSPECTION(Before and After Each Use)• Inhalation valve disc• Exhalation valve disc• Harness straps• Lens• Cartridge/canister• Facepiece blank• Accessories

INSPECTION PROCEDURES

1. Look for breaks or tears in the facepiecehead-strap material.

2. Make sure all straps, fasteners, andadjusters are in placeand not damaged.

3. Check the facepiece for dirt, cracks, tears, or holes that penetrate the rubbersurface.

Note: Some superficial, surface cracksmay become noticeable, when the rubber issignificantly stretched, and are expectedduring the normal aging process. Rubbersurface imperfections may be observedupon closer inspection of the mask and donot affect the performance of the mask. These imperfections are also noticeable dueto a "streaking" appearance where thewhite residue wax additive does not comethrough the rubber. This rubber surfacechange is a result of the aggressive rubberprimer used during the lens bondingprocess. It is required by the designto ensure a robust lens bond is made. These superficial, surface cracks are typicaland acceptable due to the design.

Also, if there is any rubber cracking or sep-aration greater than 1/16" along the edge ofthe mask, the mask should be removedfrom service. Cracking or separation of this

type may lead to greater cracking or sepa-ration under the greater stress applied dur-ing donning or doffing of the mask.

4. Check the lens for cuts, scratches, ordamage which would impair vision.Squeeze the lens. It should collapseeasily between your fingers. Check thatthe lens is secured in the facepiece.

5. Look at the shape of the facepiece fordistortion due to improper storage.

6. Unthread the car-tridge/ canister (ifinstalled), and checkthat the spider gasket, inhalation valve, anddeflector nose cup areinstalled and undam-aged.

7. Grasp the spider gas-ket by the raised tabsand pull it gently outof the facepiece. Thegasket must be free ofcracks, tears, dirt, anddistortion. The gasketmust be soft and flexible.

8. Reach into the face-piece and removedeflector and inhala-tion valve. The deflec-tor and inhalationvalve must be free ofcracks, tears, dirt, anddistortion. The inhala-tion valve must be soft and flexible.

9. Set these parts aside in a clean location.

10. Insert the P/N 461828spanner wrench intothe side voicemitterretaining ring. Turn thering counter-clockwiseto unthread.

11. Remove the side voicemitter (smallerport on the side of the facepiece) fromthe port. The voicemitter may needpushed from inside of facepiece toremove.

TAL 906 (L) Rev. 19 - 43035123

INSPECTION

12. Inspect the side voicemitter for signs ofdamage which would let contaminantenter the facepiece.

13. Inspect the front voicemitter (large portin the center of the facepiece below thelens) for signs of damage which wouldlet contaminant enter the facepiece.

14. Carefully remove thevoicemitter gasketfrom the port. Gasketmust be free ofcracks, tears, dirt, anddistortion. The gasketmust be soft and flexi-ble.

15. Set the gasket aside in a clean location.16. Remove the rubber

cover from the exhala-tion valve. Lift thevalve and inspect theseat and valve forcracks, tears, dirt, anddistortion. The valvemust be soft and flexi-ble.

17. Reinstall the rubbercover. Be sure that thecover lip surroundsthe valve completelyand that the tab isinserted through thecover.

18. Check the drink tube for cuts, abra-sions, or other signs of damage. Graspthe knurled surface and pull the tubeout of the cover to check it for signs ofdamage. Be sure the tube is reinstalledin its port completely.

19. Reinstall the voicemit-ter gasket in the sideport. Be sure that it isflat.

20. Place the voicemitter into the port.

Note: The voicemitter’s crimped side facesout (up).

21. Thread the retaining ring into the portand tighten using the spanner wrench.

22. Place the deflector (with the inhalationvalve in place on the post) into the face-piece.

23. Line up the deflectorso that it is betweenthe guide tabs moldedinto the facepiece.

24. While holding the deflector in place, press the spider gasket on to the postfrom outside the facepiece.

25. Insert the gasketgroove into the portso that the groovecaptures the lip of theport completely. Runyour finger around thegasket to be sure thegasket lays flat.

26. Thread the cartridge/canister into theport. (see Preparing the Respirator forUse section)

27. If any part is damaged or deteriorated, itmust be replaced. Store only undam-aged respirators for further use. Whennot in use, store the respirator in cool, dry, and clean ambient air. Keep new fil-ters in their packing.

Note: Some cosmetic changes maybecome noticeable and are expected duringthe normal aging process. White residuemay appear and is caused by an FDAapproved wax additive that is in the rubberby design. This wax was chosen because itis not harmful should it contact the user'sskin. The wax affords the rubber therequired protection it needs during expect-ed product use. It is normal for this wax tocome to the surface and can be cleaned byusing MSA Confidence Plus (P/N10009971). Rubber surface imperfectionsmay be observed upon closer inspection ofthe mask and are typically caused by thewhite wax residue. These imperfections are
